Fading Suns

To: Duke Agichi Ho

Were you of the sands of Herbert, your insult would be met with an immediate response in kind. However, as the words you speak do not echo of it’s winds, I must conclude that you have spent too long offworld, enthrall to those who, perhaps, know the rhythms and songs of their world, but not those of ours. That, I must remind myself, is the only possible answer to the insult you have given us.

However, if I must outline the ways in which you insult us, and the rest of those who walk Herbert's sands, I will do so.

Firstly, you presume to speak to me as an Equal. You are not, nor were ever your clans, the equals to ours. Know your place in the world. I am insulted.

Secondly, you trespass upon lands that belong both in deed and in blood to house Azgheya. You trespass, and then dare to make demands upon fiefs and serfs that are not yours. House Azgheya is insulted

Thirdly, you insult his grace the Arch-Bishop by calling upon him outside of his holy of holy duties. The Arch-Bishop is not there to arbitrate between noble houses, and especially not to arbitrate when there is nothing to arbitrate. We are insulted for him.

Fourthly, you insult the Brother Battle by drawing them into a conflict that is not theirs. It is their task to protect pilgrims to the holy sites of our world. You presume upon their nature at the interest of your enrichment. We are insulted for them.

These reasons are the reasons you insult us. Withdraw your troops, return home, and meditate upon your actions, lest we demand compensation.

King Ceviker Azgheya

@Jehoshua

From the Office of the Hazat Izan, the Ruling King of Shaddam, Novarch of the Nine Part Worlds, Suzerain to the Io Ians, Prince of Chandra and Inceilla, and the Chief Admiral of the Hazat Fleet.
To the Office of the Archbishop, Brothers of Battle, Novarchs of Azgheya and Al-Malik, and the Duke Ho.

The Hazat Izan shall speak, and the scribe shall enter all into the record for posterity.

It is year 4802. It is time of strife, rebellion, heresy, and weakness. Incarnates brazenly proclaim their unholiness in public. Rebels bear lasguns against their lords to take from them everything that is good. People all over the known worlds forget virtue and tradition. The little duke of the north is such weak man. He forgets his place in the world, and dares to present himself as an equal partner to a Ruling King of Herbert in a matter that is wholly contained within the Ruling King's sovereign territory.

The good King of the Azgheya have purchased this patch of desert with payment of livestock, and have worked the land through construction of barracks, walls, and fortresses. The land is the Ruling King's, by right. The King of Azgheya may thus dispense with the land as he pleases, according to the concord between our Church and the Royalty of Herbert.

Thus, the little Duke fails to establish his right to interfere with the good work of the Ruling King.

Hazat Izan shall continue.

By tradition and the concord between the Church and the Ruling Kings of Herbert, nobles and royalty of Herbert have the sacred duty to use technology so that the peasants may live blissful, full lives without the risk of their souls being corrupted by evils inherent in machines. Thus, we Ruling Kings of Herbert not only are permitted, but have the duty, to take the lead in ensuring all machines and technology within our fief follow the guidance of the Church. This may be anything from the humble winnowing machine to the esoteric machinery of the Grand Republic.

As the land belongs to Azgheya by right, Azgheya and Azgheya alone must ensure the sanctity of this land with the help of Bishops of the faith. Brothers of Battle may send bodyguards to protect the Bishops, should the excavation prove perilous. However, this is only their duty as established by the Faith. Thus, only due that the Ruling King of Azgheya need pay is to respect the Bishops' Guidance.

Thus I establish that Azgheya have the right to work the lands of his own territory and subjects, especially in matters that are related to technology.

Thus, the little Duke fails to establish why the King of Azgheya should provide the artifacts recovered from the desert to Brothers of Battle, and not the Bishop of the Orthodoxy.

Hazat Izan shall continue. The sovereignty of the Ruling King over his own territories is a fundamental right of Royalty. This cannot be voided, even under ecclesiastical authority, as territories are secular matter, and us Ruling Kings are masters of the secular world by the concord. Thus, Ruling King of the Azgheya have the right to repulse incursions into his lands by foreign powers as he sees fit.

The little Duke Ho seeks to challenge the authority of the Ruling King by bringing his armies to knock upon Azgheyan door. The Little Duke have the right to do so, as he is Noble, and war is his prerogative.

The King of the Azgheya also have the right to repulse this fragrant disrespect to his authority by any means necessary, including war.

If war is not the intention of the little Duke, then why must us Ruling Kings tolerate this turbulence any further?

This is the Law, as viewed by the Hazat Izan. Hazat Izan shall now await assent or counterargument.

It is done.

The sands stretched forever on, but here there was water. A small pool, brackish with dust, lay in the shade of a young palm. Its leaves barely rose above the ground, but its roots already stretched deep and low. They drew strength from the grasses around the oasis, which gave their vigor in death to the plants of the shore.

One day, the wind blew hard and strong. A small tumbleweed, adrift on the sea of sand, rolled by the tree and broke apart at the water’s edge. A seed, a small thing, had clung to its thorny vines for miles that not even the Pancreator could count. It buried itself in the soil and tried to sprout, claiming the ground for its own.

But as its roots dug down, as it tried to find power, it found only that which had preceded it. This was another’s ground, and though it had traveled far, it had come to a place of another, a place already owned.

To: Archdukes Azgheya and Al-Malik and Their Graces the Archbishop of Herbert and the Grand Master of the Brothers Battle

My Lords,

The staring contest over the republican ruins is of little benefit to any side, and it would seem that we all desire the same holy end. That is to say the removal of any dangerous artifacts from unworthy hands and the same artifacts proper assessment and if necessary destruction under ecclesiastical authority should they prove corrupt and dangerous to the good of Herbert. We propose therefore honorable brethren that the task of unearthing what remains to be found in the ruins uncovered by the Riah Hariqa nomads becomes a collective one. For as it stands this stand-off in the sands is to the detriment of us all, after all our energies are better directed towards improving the prosperity of the planet than probing each others weaknesses.

I propose therefore that a combined team under the mutual oversight of the Al-Malik, Azgheya and Agichi houses oversee the excavation of the ruins. While the honourable brothers battle provide security to the site itself to prevent unwanted scavengers from stealing any scraps should a momentary lapse occur. Concurrently the entire endeavour ought to be under the oversight of His Grace the Archbishop through the instrumentality of the Avestite order to ensure that no party to such a collective and noble endeavour as we propose falls to to the siren song of heresy and removes a dangerous artifact from legitimate oversight for their own advantage.

Regarding spoils, any technological artifact of a questionable nature ought to be sequestered by the Orthodox see as is only right and proper in these matters. Regarding other resources as may be uncovered, in our opinion a legitimate and equitable division between our three honourable houses and the order of the brothers battle ought to be arranged. We suggest an equal distribution of a quarter part of any resources extracted from the site to each party is fair and reasonable.

Let us transform this unfortunate standoff into a beacon of noble cooperation, a rebuke to the heretic and an example to the commons. Let us reject in turn the path of war and an unseemly battle over the scraps a lost age.

Yours Faithfully.

Duke Agichi Ho of Herbert.

By the grace of the Pancreator, and with all due respect, we would like to remind His holiness that House Azgheya has, from the moment the first foot stepped upon these ancient sands, invited the church to work with us in caring for this land. We strongly reject the Duke's involvement in this matter, and hope that there is no further need to bother the church in a matter that is purely between the nobility.

This world Your Grace is a garden, and yet in this garden of Our Lord's serpents abound, and oh do they love to raise their heads and bare their fangs and at times even whisper sweet sounding words on their forked tongues to those foolish enough to listen to them.

I will get straight to the point. Our information based on observation of the Riah Hariqa as of the time House Agichis operation was ordered was that the Riah Hariqa, who had no right whatsoever to the republican ruins to begin with, rendering thereby any claim by the Azhgeya to legitimate ownership based on purchase of land rights worth less than the sheep skin it is scratched upon, had made secret counsel with the same Azhgeya and revealed to them the location of ruins harking to the age of heresy and that contained therein was an artifact of blasphemous technology. At the same time we learned that the Riah Hariqa offered scouts and rangers to the service of the Io-Ian and that these were primarily engaged in observing Hazat movements.

We expected in course that the Azhgeya, being half-a-step removed from desert savages and granted by an accident of history the titles and dignity of nobility, would publically at that time as is customary in matters pertaining to forbidden technology release the coordinates of the ruins to Your Grace for them to be assessed by your agents and for your forces to consign anything forbidden contained therein to oblivion before what legitimate artifacts and resources were contained therein were released into Azhgeya custody. For indeed as the Hazat rightly say and contrary to the stated position of the Azhgeya that this is a matter purely between the nobility, it is the nobles obligation "to take the lead in ensuring all machines and technology within our fief follow the guidance of the Church" and this includes forfeiting forbidden technology, such as nuclear weapons, cloning facilities and the like to the sole custody of the Church. They did not do so.

Rather we observed instead the strange silence of the Azhgeya as the Hazat subsumed House Io-Ian through threat of force and through the instrumentality of a farcical propaganda campaign facilitated by the shills of the Guild. This act being grossly against noble norms and one of great concern to us but which we were hardly in a position alone amongst houses to object too where all others were silent. We see now as well that the Hazat, scarcely a year after their great triumph and despite having no stake whatever in this stand-off in the sands, voice their support of the Azhgeya in the matter of ownership of a site based on purchasing rights to the ruins from a tribe that had no right to the land involved to begin with. Two birds of a feather flock together Your Grace, or perhaps the Azhgeya's silence in the matter of the Io-Ian was due to something other than mere indifference and is simply the price the Azhgeya paid for the Hazat to turn the other cheek on their errant endeavors.

Nonetheless presuming still upon the Azhgeya's good nature and fearing that the Riah Hariqa with the imminent subjection of their Io-Ian backers under the Hazat would in haste foist heretical technologies to the likes of the Scravers Guild (whose ships you would know have been observed loitering on our fair world) for propagation to whatever criminal or heretical group might see fit to purchase them, we immediately contacted the battle brothers as the most proximate ecclesiastical authority to the area in question with the military power to prevent such a nefarious act and notified them that Republican artefacts of spiritual and temporal concern were likely fall into the wrong hands if concerted action was not taken to secure the artifacts by the pious post haste. It was our intention then that once the site was secured with the aid of the battle brothers the ordinary ecclesiastical investigation would then commence without obstruction under the auspices of the See of Herbert. Alas by the time our forces had arrived the Azhgeya and the Al-Malik (who presumably learned of the location of the ruins by their own means) had already arrived and the former had set up forts and hoisted their sheep-skin scrap of a flag claiming ownership. Hence the point we have come too.

Still, Your Grace, as you have read and supported, we proposed a common and collaborative excavation and knowing the Azhgeyas vulgar, covetous nature and the Al-Maliks secular disposition suggested some division of spoil to compensate all involved for expenses incurred, to at least allow desert tribesmen the chance to save face and manifest clearly their participation in civilised society. They refused, projecting their covetousness onto us, and through us to Our Liege Her Gracious Majesty the Archduchess of Clarke and Tenno of House Li Halan and uttering calumnies against us and against our honour. For this slight we will obtain due satisfaction. Nonetheless we are a rational man and observing that the situation is not necessarily to our advantage we are compelled to withdraw from the ruins. For as we have said we desire no unseemly scrabble over the relics of a lost age and with the Al-Malik fleeing the scene ( tail between their legs we might add much like an Assimovian dog-monkey flees a Xyall Nymph newly hatched and ravenous out of its egg ) out of fear of the combined power of the Hazat and Azhgeya, whose shady association with each other is clear to all, we are not foolish or impious enough to forget prudence and sacrifice the lives of our men for no profitable end.

We can only urge Your Grace to make full use of your authority to ensure that the ruins are properly assessed under the direct control and secure protection of the Church, and that all that is forbidden within them is either deposited safely in the bosom of the same mother Church or cast into purifying avestite flame. Alas we fear what the serpents lurking in your garden may do, for as it is written in the holy Omega Gospels "by their fruits you shall know them". Observe Your grace, the fruits borne by those who calumniate our honour, dabble on the fringes of heresy while imbibing the juices of noxious cacti and further so recently offended against the hospitality of your hall are beneath the skin rotten indeed.

PS: we have attached a copy of the relevant intelligence dossiers for Your Graces perusal.

ooc translation: we withdraw because Ork does, but not without objection, particularly noting that claims of legitimate ownership based on purchase from the Riah Hariqa are obviously spurious because the latter did not legitimately own the land to begin with (Allodial land rights could only possibly be held by the Church or the High Noble "sovereigns" with vassal lords holding fiefhold (either directly or as secondary or tertiary fiefholders under other vassals) and freeholders feudal freehold under their feudal overlord in a descending feudal structure with the "King' at the top. For the Azhgeya to make a claim of ownership based on purchasing the rights means they did not own the land allodially to begin with, yet the Riah Hariqa not being a "royal sovereign" or the Church could not possibly have owned the allodial or feudal rights to then sell them to the Azhgeya legitimately. Therefore the true owner is either another house unknown or the Church itself. At any rate the Azhgeya claim is spurious).

ooc II: Lord Agichi is proud, the above diplomacy reflects that.

Quotation (with top secret info censored) from my private update (intelligence report) on the previous turn. (complete with typos :p )

Spoiler :
*CENSORED* was able to learn that the Azgheya were able to make contact wiht the Riah Hariq, who took them to a site in the deep desert. The site - *CENSORED* - consisted primarily of the ruins of an ancient town or small city from the time of the Grand Republic. Indeed Duke Agichi Ho is so succesful that he is able to learn that that Io-Ian have a longstanding contract with the Riah Hariq who offer scouts and rangers to this minor house to support their military. The latter in engaged primarily in observing Hazat movements.

To: His Grace the Archbishop of Herbert
From: Archduchess Naganaka Ichika of House Li Halan.

Your Grace,

We understand that our vassal, His Grace the Most Excellent Duke of Herbert Agichi Ho has already written to you regarding the spuriousness of the Azhgeya claims to ownership of the ruin site and the imperative of ecclesiastical oversight of matters pertaining to matters of blasphemous technology. Furthermore we have been advised that he has informed you of the intelligence obtained that compelled him to swift action to secure the location of the ruins lest it result in the dissemination of forbidden artifacts to the likes of the criminal and the heretic. Know that we support him absolutely in this and that additionally the insults hurled against him and his intentions by the perfidious Azhgeya and added too albeit to a lesser degree by the Hazat are nothing less than insults against us. As the sins of the vassal are those of the liege, so is it that offences against the vassal are committed against the liege also.

We urge you, given Azhgeya intransigence and Al-Malik weakness in the face of provocations from the Azhgeya an the Hazat, as the representative of Holy Church and viceregent of the Pancreator himself upon Herbert to assume direct oversight of the ruins that what sacrilegious artifacts might therein be contained may be documented and destroyed. Certainly the Azhgeya would not refuse this if their intentions are pure. We likewise urge you to ensure future outrages on the part of savages are clearly condemned, that the likes of the obscenity committed against House Io-Ian is not repeated.

Yours Faithfully.

Tenno Naganaka Ichika - Archduchess of Clarke, Sovereign of House Li Halan.

Again the little man insults his betters, yipping insults like a monkey-child behind his parents, knowing that his blather will be ignored, because his parents have strength. That strength does not belong to him, though he has not yet realized that. There are hard lessons, once the monkey-child pulls a hacan’s tail, and feels it’s saber-teeth around his arm.

I call you a monkey-child, Agichi, each generation of your breeding worth less than the ones before, your lineage distilling it’s mediocrity into your being. Coward, I call you, and Coward you will remain named. Coward, for hiding behind the coat-tails of the church. Coward, for cowering behind the fading strength of House Li Halan. Coward, for belting your petty insults against your betters from a place of hiding.

You claim that you desire satisfaction. I hereby accept your challenge for a duel to restore your lost honor. That satisfaction will be paid, lest all the worlds know you for the blathering Coward I now know you to be.

We will fight a Duel, Hand to Hand, skill against skill, will against will, piety against piety. I will kill you, and then your son may go home, properly chastened, but with no enmity from House Azgheya, all slights forgiven.

Or

You will refuse the duel, and be marked a coward in the eyes of the people and church, a stain that will color all your works, a stench that will permeate every endeavor you attempt.

It is year 4802, and the worlds are awash in heresy, rebellion, and weakness. For the sake of preserving the tradition of nobility and the Laws of Kings, Hazat Izan henceforth declares that his daughter, Absu Marcado of 22 years of age shall wed into the House of Hawkwood. The honor of the Marcado daughter is of paramount importance to the Hazat, and I vow to defend her new household as if it is my own. Let this vow stand until death or when the stars fade into dust, whichever comes first.

The marriage ritual shall be conducted on Watts. The good duke Dulcinea and I shall be in attendance, bearing great gifts. Thus I have decreed, let this be done.

Duke Paul Rémillard of Watts sends his congratulations on the marriage between the houses of Hawkwood and the Hazat!

If needed we can offer you some time after the marriage at one of our spas, ever lovely for a newly wedded couple to relax in. Barring that wine will make a good gift to sent to you, as would our bards ready to perform. Make joy for joyful day!

If you wish to send invitations Marc Rémillard, the son and heir of Paul, will be aviable to attend. Paul himself would wish to attend but buisness with the Xyall has his attention and he will alas have to be off world. You will find Marc a worthy face and great artistic mind.

The Hazat Izan would welcome the visitation of the Remiallard family, but will defer to Lord Hawkwood on establishing a guest list.

Ah the noble Lord must have read our letter to the Archbishop and perused the dossier attached. Now then putting aside our bafflement at how you could consider a letter to the Archbishop to constitute a demand to you for a duel from us given it was not written to you, I wonder what point of honour the Chief of the Azhgeya is so offended by that he wishes to clash blades with this old one nigh thirty years his senior and seize our head? We do note that you have not denied anything we have said regarding the illegitimacy of your claims to land ownership to the ruins, or in relation to any other matter we have mentioned regarding you or yours.

At any rate we shall entertain your childish tantrum. But before we confirm acceptance or rejection of your challenge (the latter being without any stain on our honour on grounds of advanced age, religious prohibition and the baselessness of your claimed grievance ), this old one as the challenged party (as we have established, it is you who has challenged us to judicial combat, not the other way around) has the right to set acceptable terms, as is tradition.

-

1) Would you, dear boy, accept a champion to fight in our place in the duel. After all as we have said, we are an old man closer to our seventieth year than not.

2) Further would you accept the standard rules of duelling, namely that standard issue weapons are to be used (sword and shield) of identical stock that no combatant is at an unfair advantage

3)Given that our obligations to our people come well ahead of satisfying your personal delight in savagery. We would request that the duel occur at an acceptable time. Given the important matters currently on our desk we would suggest some time next year would be appropriate as it would enable all our affairs to be put in order.

-

One last thing. It would be good of you to clarify as to what precise offense against your honour such a duel, if held, would result in satisfaction for. (I'm afraid referring to historical fact is not legitimate grounds good lad).

At any rate we await your response.
