Has anyone ever considered that the Soviet Union pretended to fall and become mostly democratic so the Western world will let down their guard, and once their guard has been let down enough, come out of their disguise and strike down on the west with a clenched fist? Is this idea plausable?

Sure, it's plausible, if we didn't have information exchange. But, seeing the widespread poverty and desperation shows us that no, it's not a ruse.

It is not. I don't quite see how you could fake the utter state of anarchy that the USSR was in in the early '90s (and pretty much still is in, btw)

Well, just replace the "Soviet Union" by "Russia" and we can talk about it.

Russia has never considered the fall of its Empire (called USSR) as something everlasting. That's why they opposed the NATO enlargement, that's why they support authoritarian regimes in so-called "near abroad".

Russia is an expansionist nation from its very beginning. This won't change now.

How would anyone know if we had full information exchange?

Shhh... The United States of America and Europe don't really exist... it's all a conspiracy to keep us calm... for more information, contact Neo...

You are mistaken. You state Russia pretended to become democratic as a ruse for the Western Powers.

Russia was never a democracy.

P.S. Que the Stalinist/Russian Nationalist revisionists is 3, 2, 1...

Nah, it's actually Australia that's going to strike down on the west with a clenched fist. It's just been spotted we're a giant hoax in the moon landings thread, so it's now time to strike before word spreads. We're going to detach Tasmania, sail it across the pacific and crash it into california, at which point all the australians will pour out riding kangaroos with pouches full of venomous snakes, which will be used on anyone who gets in the way.

Something like that anyway.

Yes the Soviet Union is secretely mobilising for a full scale invasion of the United States and will be attacking tomoorow moring when hundreds of commercial jets mysteriously appear in mexico

We've lost contact with the southern united states, there are mysterious reports of red troops coming from mexico and nuclear bombs detonated in washington

The bombing starts in five minutes.

 Every President seems to suffer at least one "oops, that mic was on?" moment, don't they!

^ At least that one was better than the Governor George W. Bush "one-fingered victory salute!"

I thin you've been reading too much of my paranoid posts :)

The Soviet Union is what we in Political Science call an "empire", that is, a bunch of states that have been subjugated by another state and controlled against their will. Nations more or less do not voluntarily become parts of an empire; for Russia to regain anything resembling its Soviet-era empire it would have to use a degree of force which it is no longer capable of. And that doesn't factor in that there would be several nuclear powers whose interests do not jive with a new Russian empire and who'd likely try to stop it.
