Maybe an idea would be, as other people suggested, to be able to purchase settlers as a finisher instead of great people with faith. A cool addition would also be when you find the city, it would already follow your religion.

You could try a tradition 4 cities opening. Try to get as construction as fast as you can then build colusseums in your core 4 cities. This would allow you to expand on a stable basis. But I usually play tall so I'm not sure if that's the best tactic. Here's a guide on the Tradition 4...

Unfortunately, yes you do. You also have a bad timing, last weekend everything was on sale for 75% off, and you could update your game to a gold edition (with all the dlc's) for only a few dollars.
