Things That Defy Logic

I think the game is great.

Like anything I like a lot, I am still left not totally understanding it. (Like my wife . . . who thankfully doesn't read Col. site)

3 things that seem to defy logic:

1. No horses in my colony, just wagon trains. Hey, why can't I unhitch the horses from the wagon?

2. The wagon trains all line up top to bottom. Requiring you unload them by holding the mouse key, and scrolling up at the same time. And you can't just move a wagon train to the front. So, you end up just unloading wagon train into the colony then loading it on the ship instead of messing with slow scrolling as you drag items.

3. Dragoon count against my independance count. Go figure. I guess they signed up, but don't believe in the cause?!

And, one more I already mentioned:

4. A converted native can be trained in the village he just came from! So, I guess they didn't teach him farming the first 23 years he lived there.

AND, none of that detracts from the joy of the game

And the silly privateer captain keeps sinking the ONLY French caravel instead of taking his cargo.

...oh wow. I've played the original Col for ages but never thought about that. You have changed my world.

No wonder they kicked him out of the village then.

Two different types of horses. Even back then, pack horses were bred to be stronger, while the "dragoon horses" were bred to be faster. They weren't really interchangeable.

Why would they? Just because he is member of village with Expert Farmers does not mean that convert you get should be the one of the experts.

In same way as your new grown colonists start as Free Colonist and not as Fishermen, if you had such experts in settlement.

Hey, this is war. The colony is at stake. I don't care how the horses were trained... unhitch them and put a man on them!

The natives were much better about training all their people in skills. A native who grows up among expert farmers is going to know something about... farming. Unless he's the medicine man, and then they have other problems with him converting. :)

If a horse is not trained for war, you defiantly do not want to be on it when the fighting starts. You will not need the enemy to to end up a casualty.

Dragoons fought on foot, not from horseback. Horses were used merely for transport, to give them superior mobility over regular infantry.

The problem is the wagon train only has 2 horses and it takes 50 horse for 1 Dragoon. So you would have to unhitch 25 wagon trains to get enough.

becareful what you wish for, some might suggest adding a horse requirement to build a wagon train.

Come to think about that would not be a totally bad idea. :)

I'm pretty sure this isn't true, unless there's a vocabulary conflict. Tarlelton's men fought on horseback, and the American cavalry almost decimated the British Redcoats at Guilford Courthouse (until Cornwallis turned cannon fire on to his own men).

A Dragoon has only one horse... :mischief:

To keep on the list if you really look into the detail ...
- Wagon w/o horse
- All professions without tools (ok specialists coming from Europe could have their own tools, but no the ones formed locally)
- Fisherman w/o wood and tools to make his fishing boat
- Population growth without having to build housing (which in turn would require wood and tools)

Some other remarks on the top of my head :
- How about paper as a resource for the schools etc ... (could be part of the trading goods)
- All colonist are vegetarians (only fields and fish, no livestock)
- no buildings to enhance food apart from for the fishes (granary/ grain mill etc etc)

Pretty sure you are thinking of Hobilars dude.

While we're at it, who ever heard of breeding horses by feeding them fish? Horses are strict vegetarians.

What's funny is population growth due to... over abundance of food. because we all know that if you eat too much, a baby comes.
