In terms of unit loss. Maybe some loaded, unescorted galleons running afoul of AI Frigates, or bringing a stack of 40 units and getting caught in open ground by AI siege or mounted units?

Mine was an overseas invasion force that was strong enough to hold a city, but not strong enough to hold 2. I split my stack ater taking a coastal city and it was defeated piecemeal. Lost about 25 units and the remaining dozen or so retreated to my Transports.

Lets hear your horror stories!

Naval invasion fleet consisting of about:

4-5 missile cruisers
6 destroyers
3 carriers
transports with around 25 modern armor, 10 mech inf and some mobile sams and arty.

+ wrong end of some tactical nukes.

I had a fairly large army of redcoats and cannons left over from my continental wars which I gathered in my capital. I packed it into a fleet of 7 galleons and shipped em off to the isolated Mongolians who were HUGE, but had just gotten feudalism. I split my galleons up and instantly razed three coastal cities as they were using minimal defenses. From there I moved inland, and landed two transports on the other side of their continent to take a few cities. In total I was able to raze 6 cities and keep two. But as I moved my redcoats deeper into their territory, they'd get torn apart by knights. In the end, Khan's massive stack of ancient units obliterated my redcoat task force and nearly took back the two cities I had grabbed. I had to stop there. All though it wasn't too much of a loss in terms of numbers (20 or so units), the cause they all died for was totally pointless. He wouldn't even capitulate.

Starting warrior sees hut close to capital and pops it right away.

Bunch of barbs spawn from it and my warrior is dead.

And now... the real disaster...

Those barbs then immediately waltzed right into my culture borders and walked into my capital. Since my starting warrior had just died from that fiasco, there was not a hope in hell of getting any defense.

Game... Over...

Gilgy was the last holdout for a conquest win. I parked several stacks of Modern Armor and Mech Infantry just outside his territory. I was planning to take the first city and then push north and fan out. In my stacks I probably had at least 150 units. I sent in my bombers first and moved my stacks closer to the city.

Guess who had nukes? Guess who used them?

Guess what stupid Lemon didn't realize that you still have access to uranium with a fort?

"He had no mines? WTH? He had no mines!!!!"

I had maybe three badly wounded tanks when he was done. Arrrrgh. :(

When I though UN Nuclear ban meant EXISTING nukes cannot be used as well. :mischief:

Long story short, I got decimated. Totally WIPED OUT.

I had that happen to me too, but I don't necessarily count flagrant game flaws in this sense.

For me, it was being 2 turns behind on the space race, declaring on the target, taking a coastal city, landing the remaining units into the beach head to move them 2 tiles in (in position for a suicide raze of the capitol)...

and then getting nuked by tacs 2 or 3 times. I had some units left, badly damaged and in no position to finish their mission. Nukes had been banned, but apparently not in time .

These days I usually don't ban nukes, but rather use them as the ultimate form of collateral. It's amazing how easy it is to slice through mech infantry, modern armor, and everything else if you're willing to maul your diplo.

i havent had any real big losses but i did have a war with the russians a weeks ago. i was maya and i thought i could do damage to them with swordmend and axemen.. some how they were able to totaly kik my invadeing forces but with only a few archers defending and they would kill my guys in the open like a hot knife in buter.

even a super cheat swordmen unit got blasted to hell by 1 archer like 4 times. so after i was only able to ravage the lands i gave up the war.

it was totaly wth type stuff on prince though.

My worst loss would be losing an entire tank stack that I had carelessly left unbalanced with defenders for the tank's weaknesses. Zara happily destroys it completely and just about ends the possibility of my highest hopes for the games. Sure, I beat him anyway but it took too long to win anything but Time Victory.

I don't recall exactly. Maybe two incidents are running together. I conquered or vassalized the group of continents I started in. All that was left was Shaka an his stooge Ghandi. He got mad at me, and since I ruled the seas I decided to go get him. Took over a mixed task force bombarded the city in on turn, rolled over both infantry defenders with marines/artillery / infantry, with some medics and machine guns for good measure.

Shazaam! Overnight upgrades! I got hit with bombers for a few turns, went back to my foothold to heal and regroup with with Shaka-sized SoDs of Mech Infantry & Modern Armor on my tail.

Total annihilation for that expeditionary force. I should have world -built some nukes and wiped Ghandi off of the map to make myself feel better, but I just quit, rather than play the game out- too disapointed.

Too many to choose amongst...but the most unfair was when I had two artillery and two panzers take a city from an opponent that had just gotten riflemen. No enemy units appeared close enough to counter-attack (none visible within 4) so I took the city, then was amazed when on the opponent's turn about 40 cavalry came along and retook the city and took out my nearly full strength units without losing a single cav unit (though many withdrew badly bloodied).

lol, ok

Losing a stack of tanks to a nuke and consecutive banging...30-40 tanks all gone :)

Since then i learned to no stack up units in a nuclear war :)

Actually, since then i don't use tanks anymore, better infantry....

50 tanks, 20 artillery, and assorted counter-units annihilated. Invaded Pericles to stop him from getting a culture win, he had 2 cities at 50,000 and his 3rd was at 41,000 so I had to rush. My entire force lands, and takes a city to use as a foothold for air-drops. And stupidly..I didn't disconnect his rail network. Next turn...I think I was hit with a few hundred it seemed units. Lost everything, except maybe 10 tanks. Can you say 20 ICBMS on 2 cities was decent revenge ;)

Guess what stupid Lemon didn't realize that you still have access to uranium with a fort?

What??? You have access to recourses with forts? Are you serious, is that true?? So that's why my automated workers build forts on recourses out of cities' reach???:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

Arrgh  and I always thought "Stupid workers stop building forts on my recourses or I'll put you to sleep!"
Stupid stupid SickFak

and uh... what's WB scouting? stupid SickFak

Workboat scouting, on Archipelago maps you can sometimes get Circumnavigation with just that 1 workboat, it's useful even on say Continents to give you a goo idea of the land.

At the time, not knowing the meaning of WHEOOHRN.

Huge map, killed of America and was fighting Bismark who held the center. Bismark was about to go down. Japan and Aztecs were sealed behind Bismark and were suspiciously peaceful. I was on good terms with both, but early in the game they were annoyed with me. Took a German city bordering Toko and all hell broke loose.

Next turn mass Samari's and Jumbo's pacing back and forth next to the city; uh oh. Toko and Mony both declare on me and send over 200 units. I got steamrolled.

I reloaded and tried again to see if it was possible to win. Switching to nationhood and drafting rifles while retreating veterans into cultural controled border city worked, but it was alot of carnage.
