Does anyone actually use the culture slider?

I was playing a random civ game tonight and got the Greeks, and I was thinking there seem to be a number of UBs that give a happiness bonus from using the culture slider. Is that useful in any context other than pursuing a culture victory?

I don't think I've ever deliberately played for a cultural victory, though I think I've gotten one just through the way the game developed a few times. I never use the culture slider.

The culture slider is an excellent "peaceful" way of taking an enemy's cities.

All the time. Usually later war can result in quite a bit of unhappiness but Colosseums and theaters+ culture slider can handle it.

I do not use it, I use other ways to maintain happiness.
I think it's too expensive, but it's possible to use it, yes.

The culture slider sees heavy use early on when I am establishing new cities and need to keep older, larger, and more developed ones happy even though they have a cluster of happieness generating buildings. It's a good enough tool in both regards.

Actually it's a rather terrible method of doing that, because of the inefficient distribution.

Culture slider is to combat major (and hopefully temporary) happiness problems or for culture victories where it is used extensively.

Three reasons to use it:

Emergency use in war. If you are getting war weariness and have a short-term goal before making peace, turn on culture. (But if you plan to war for another 50 turns, you should instead make peace now, fix your happiness, and then declare again).

When going for a culture victory, make 3 commerce cities, get all your techs, then put culture to 100%.

Running a specialist economy, where you don't have any commerce city, you can get an extra 2 happiness per tick for huge late-game cities. (Never done this myself, but it seems reasonable, with Rep and Mercantilism).

Other situations, like one city needing a pop its borders, it's usually better to run an artist or build a theater.

almost every game, since in the war ,the  grows quickly,so you have to use slider to keep your fertility in the war time

what did you mean?

Keep losses and #warturns down and it won't be so bad.

Late game you get jails/rushmore and possibly police state to help.

a theatre is only 50 production,an archer is 25 plus maintaince
so building a theatre is better than using a military unit to keep :)
so when you own a theatre , judging the culture slider is very more economic than leaving the :mad:itself

The point is to minimize your spending on it. Less turns = fewer turns running the slider, no matter what. However, fewer losses are also useful; you can do a lot better on the war weariness if you take very few losses.

Running the slider for 5-20 turns is a lot less painful than 40.

My favorite ultimate example to illustrate my point is the mass nuke + capitulate strategy: You declare and double or triple nuke all their cities, accruing 100's of war weariness in an instant...but you also eliminate the AI army and they capitulate the following turn, making the  suffered virtually nil despite using the most devastating weapon in the game.

Yes, but at 10% only. Just enough to give cities with a theatre a happy face or help new cities get a border pop. About the only time I'll put it higher is toward the end of a cultural victory, but most of the force behind that comes from Sistine Chapel and cathedrals.

You should use it sparingly unless you are going for cultural victory. In that case, most of us turn off the science slider late in the game and run the culture slider at 100% to get the 3 legendary cities ASAP. Until then, if you have other ways available to reduce unhappiness, use them first. Otherwise, run it at 10-20% if that takes a couple of your cities out of unhappiness. You might also use it to knock an opponent off of a key resource you need (Marble, Horses, etc.). On the other side, if Masa or some other culture giant city nearby is putting extreme cultural pressure on one of your border cities, you might use it to maintain its city borders. Since I play for Cultural Victory, I rarely have that problem. :)

Culture bombs.

Specialists.

Culture multipliers.

Remember, the culture slider is a blunt instrument, if you want to flip a city, you want to focus your culture at a single point. Specialists let you do that. Culture slider wastes most of your commerce in backline cities.

Oh, please. As if I haven't already maxed those out... First you insert the nail, then you hammer it home.

Still unlikely to be a good idea, considering how much commerce you're burning to take out a single city. Really, is it worth it? Remember, the better that city, the more food/production it must have, and hence the more innate infrastructure and culture you must overcome, and hence the more commerce you will need to sacrifice for culture slider.

The culture slider is in no way an excellent way of flipping cities, because it is so blunt it takes away momentum you could be using to work towards another victory condition.

I play Deity/Marathon with a Conquest only VC. I have all the time in the world, and the only way to win is to take the other guys' cities.

I do this when I get bored.

Either very high (90%-100%) for a culture victory, or not at all (0%).

In some cases I'll go to 10% to temporarily alleviate a happiness problem.

I never use it in the 20%-80% range.
