The free techs offered to me when I got Liberalism, with their costs and turns-to-research as shown during the previous turn, were as follows :-
Astronomy, 2600 points, 11 turns
Chemistry, 2340 points, 8 turns
Nationalism, 2340 points, 7 turns
Printing Press, 2080 points, 8 turns
Economics, 1820 points, 7 turns

Why should Nationalism take one less turn than Chemistry, since they each need 2340 points ? Why should Economics take the same number of turns as Nationalism, since it is 520 points cheaper ?

I chose Astronomy, as being the most expensive, but couldn't check the number of turns as my research varied as turns passed. Nor can I find a way to access what my research rate actually is; help, anybody ?

I think mouseover the reasearch bar at the top gives you the research rate. I'm not certain though...

The "bug" it could be for a number of reasons. You could have already researched a bit in Nationalism. I've also heard it said (though can't find a source) that if other Civs have a certain tech that tech becomes cheaper.

Check which of the prerequites you already know for each tech. I think you get a 10% research bonus for each prerequite tech you know.
