2.0 grams - The Whip and Saddle (C3C)

Hey, look at that. We're not at war yet, so I can't sink us yet! ;) Nice turns Barbslinger. Am I right to assume Nanking is set up for the Glib prebuild? I'll keep researching toward lit. With the AI running ahead with the techs, no other AI's to deal with, the GLib will at least keep us in the running.

Got it! I should have this posted no later than tomorrow evening.

Yes, that is my intention. I think we need to merge some workers into it at some point too to get it to full shield potential.watch the happiness all around and keep at getting curraughs suiciding/exploring.

[0] 1625BC
Nothing to change. We're 48 turns from Lit at -1gpt.

IBT
Aztecs moving through
Chengdu Rax -> spear, will start another worker afterwards.

[1] 1600BC
Workers at Sugar Hill move to mine/road sugar toward Nanking
Southern curragh find small island with horses on it, its all of 3 tiles large.
Northern curragh just moving along.
Bubba settles into Canton and the Spear settles down in Sugar Hill.

IBT
Shanghai worker -> spear
Sugar Hill rax -> horse

[2] 1575BC
Workers working...
Southern curragh spots coast to SE of small island. Suicide run next turn.

IBT
Aztec warrior continues north. Roman settler pair is almost to the land of the Aztecs.

[3] 1550BC
Southern curragh moves into sea. Spots yellow border!

IBT
Same old...

[4] 1525BC
Nanking grows to size three and workers connect to luxury to avoid riot next turn.
Southern curragh makes it to other side.

IBT
Aztecs plant a city in northern tundra.
Beijing finishes spear, starts settler.

[5] 1500BC
We contact Temujin and the Mongol people. :) Temujin has iron working, but lacks Alphabet and Masonry (and writing for that matter). Temujin has 5 cities total.
Trade Alphabet for Iron Working and 10 (all of his) gold.
Temujin also lacks horses. He'll likely make a run at the small island.
Northern curragh spots coast NE of our land mass.
We have iron due east of Nanking.

Aztecs have connected iron, the Romans do not.

IBT
Roman settler pair heads back south. I guess that last Aztec city finished off our land mass.
Chengdu spearman -> horse
Aztecs start Oracle, Romans are building Colossus.

[6] 1475BC
Worker at Nanking starts mine of grassland.
Working north of Beijing mines plains.
Northern Curragh spots volcano on landmass to northeast.

GRAM20_1375_Volcanos.jpg

IBT
Temujin would like our Curragh to move along...
Roman settler pair starts west? Could they sense our marsh being cleared shortly?

Canton horse -> horse
Our norther curragh sinks.

[7] 1450BC
Spot another coast NE of Mongols. Our curragh is going to make a run for it.
Sugar Hill switches Horse to curragh. We need another.

GRAM20_1375_Mongolia.jpg

IBT
Roman settler pair heads south.
Sugar Hill curragh->horse
Our southern curragh sinks.

[8] 1425BC
Can't MM Beijing to produce settler at same time as growth. Will build one turn later.
Our new Curragh, renamed SpikeIt's Explorer, heads south along the coast.
Worker clears marsh spot revealing bonus grass. Still best place for city though.
Now that we're up to 1gpt, Rome will trade CB for 1gpt and 115 gold. We hold off for now. Still hoping to pick it up from contacts and we really don't need it.

IBT
Tsingtao worker -> worker

[9] 1400BC
Worker from Tsingtao heads to horse mountain.
Worker start clearing marsh to be used by Nanking or the new city.
Mongols learn Ceremonial Burial. Still lack gold. Trade Masonry for CB straight up.

IBT
As expected. Romans head toward our cleared spot. I'll send a horse to stand guard.
Romans start Oracle.

[10] 1375BC
Send worker to Canton to start irrigation project.
Worker starts mining horses.
Horse sent to guard spot - hard to believe Rome would settle due to cultural boundaries.
Settler in Beijing due in 1.
Aztecs and Rome both have Map Making. Rome is broke now, so Aztecs must have researched it.
We can buy Mysticism for what its worth at this point.

I kind of ignored growth at this point, working on horses instead. The current settler is intended for the marsh spot where the horse stands. We could probably settle another city or two in our current lands. The Aztecs have 3 more cities than us. We could stand to have at least one more curragh in play at this point as well.

nice turns spikeit :thumbsup: little easier making trades on an arch :) looks like we need to be prepared to fight soon and I would suggest the Romans before they get that iron hooked up.

Roster:
scoutsout <- On deck
grahamiam
barbslinger
spikeit <- just played
gozpel <- UP

@scout, give gozpel about 24hrs then pick it up if he doesn't show as he's posted RL is taking over atm.

@graham - I'll keep an eye on this, but I won't be 'watching the clock'. I had 'technical difficulties' during a 1.15 game last night, and need to finish those turns up first. I'll check early Saturday evening (6-7pm EDT/GMT-4) and see if Gozpel has checked in.

@SpikeIt: :thumbsup:

whenever is fine. a lot of people will be busy this weekend so it's no biggie if it slips another day or 2.

1350bc - Beijing settler -> horse

1325bc - Rome completes the Pyramids, Aztecs starts the Oracle and the Lighthouse.

Canton horse -> horse
Chengdu horse -> horse

I have a plan.

1300bc - Celts completes Colossus

"Accidently" ask Romans to leave our territory and they declare war. Warhappiness is good.

Kill the warrior guarding settler and we have 2 slaves.

1275bc - Aztecs finish the Oracle.

Hangchow founded next to Roman borders -> warrior

Kill an archer and 2 warriors with horses, two promotes to elites.

1250bc - Nothing

1225bc - IT - Spear in Tsingtao defends against archer.

We kill another 3 archers without losses. We are now average in military :)

1200bc - Elite horse kills spear, no leader.

1175bc - IT - Horse defends against archer.

Our first casualty, a warrior dies against an archer. Elite horse kills the archer, no luck.

Kill 2 spears in Veii and pillage roman horses

1150bc - Horse defends against horse

1125bc - Horse defends against archer, this horse killed 3 units on defense in Roman territory!

Kill 2 spears and a warrior in Veii, still a spear and a warrior in the city.

1100bc - Kill a spear in Veii, a warrior left

1075bc - We take Veii finally, together with 5 slaves. No wonder it was well defended, with 2 settler pairs sitting there.

Squeezed a settler out of Beijing to poach more land.

1050bc - Kill an archer with elite horse, still no luck. We had 6-7 wins with elites now.
Rome will talk, but I wait.

1025bc - 4 elite wins this turn and leaders must be turned off. But we take Neapolis.

1000bc - Cumae (Rome) flips to Aztecs :) Caesar doesn't seem to have much luck.

We take Pompeii.

Rush workers or settler in Neapolis when the citizens calm down.

Rome is down to 3 cities, we can get Pisae and 2 techs for peace. But I would push on, we don't like flips and we can found more cities in that area.

We can speed up research on Lit (8 turns) and Palace prebuild has 20t left.

We will meet another civ in a turn or 2, so trading can take place again.

We have a settler ready to plant a city near Cumae.

Sorry, I took a few turns extra, but I had to finish what I planned. :)

gram_map_1000bc.jpg

And I almost forgot, since Rome built the Pyramids, we should definitely push on.

Bravo!
If we can eliminate Rome then Hangchow looks like it may be a very nice FP candidate. Can we merge another worker into Nanking to speed the GL build? Watch for rioting. Has the Aztecs started the GL? I don't think that the palace prebuild is for 400s, more likely 200 so we have a ways to go.

Ooh! The pyramids would be nice!

nicely done! :goodjob:

i did not mod this game at all so i think the leader luck was just poor. i had about 30+ elite wins in cotm1 before i finally got my 1st mgl. sometimes it just happens that way.

scout is up!

Nice Turns Gozpel! :thumbsup: I think this puts me "up" in this, so call this a "got it". I've got some turns to shadow in GK2, so I'll probably play this tomorrow. Any tactical pointers that come to mind would be appreciated.

If I am able to finish Rome off, is that preferred? Or is there some "Pointed Stick Research" that can be accomplished? (I understand we want to acquire the Pyramids...)

Go get them Romans and take the Pyramids :)

The curragh will say hello to someone next turn or the turn after, see what kind of trades are available then.

And watch out for the skulking archer near Shanghai.

I spent my morning dealing with skulking archers in Bede02... hammer the Romans, sail the curragh, keep an eye on the flank... affix bayonets, set hair on fire, charge. Got it.

Great job Gozpel! Outstanding. :D

If that screenshot is correct, we have 20 turns left on the palace prebuild. But we are 23 away from picking up Lit. Hopefully contact will get us Literature, or we'll have to either MM or squeeze it from Rome for a 20 turn peace. Options...

Contact won't get lit. The AI are busy researching other things. We can get some scientists to work in conjuction with a possible increase of research spending. Scoutsout and grahamiam will have to get lit in or before 20. They can swap at the big picture if they can get it in 20. I think one more town and the palace shields required will jump so that the pre-build will take longer.

that, or we can slow down the prebuild by 3 turns which should not be hard to do. scout should mess around with the sci slider before he does anything else. i have a feeling we're so far down the min research hole that we won't decrease the time to research at all, even at max.

the main thing we'll need is more contacts to make it work for us. right now, besides our local antagonists, we only know the Mongols. hopefully, we get another conact next turn and more thereafter. if we can get Map Making in a deal, then maybe the Great Lighthouse would make more sense than the Great Library for this map.

If we are that far in the hole the GL may be a must have. Completely agree on more contacts though. Especially if they don't know each other and we can become brokers extrordinaire!

Also we should get some more suicide curraughs rolling. Sugar Hill and perhaps Neopolis look like good builders.
