I have 2 computers at home connected with a home LAN.

Has anyone COMPLETED a game of Civ3 PTW by launching PTW using the CD on one computer, removing the CD once in the multiplayer local lan lobby, and then using the CD to launch PTW on another computer, and start a game playing the first computer? Last night I tested this for a few turns and it worked fine (other then the unit movement lag everyone complains about). What I DON'T want to happen is to play for several hours, and then all of a sudden the game decides to do a security check to see if the CD is in the drive, and if not shut the game down. BTW, saving frequently and restarting repeatedly doesn't appeal to me either if anyone suggests that as a work-around.

I have done this. I took my computer to a friend's house and we played this way. He wanted to make sure he liked Civ3 multi before he bought the CD. We would load PTW on one comp, then put the CD in the other comp to load it. It would crash every 2 hours or so. All we had to do was to load it from the auto save so it wasn't too much of a hassle. But I am glad that now he has the CD so it doesn't crash at all.

me and my freinds like civ3 but we dont akll have ptw, i was wondering if we installed it on compters then used a " no-cd" patch would it work?

My wife and I have tried to play hotseat but its very frustrating and takes far longer than a normal two player game. It also doesn't work very well to start it up and pull the cd out.

Is there a better work around than this? I wish I could play it without the cd in the drive so we could enjoy this game at home together.

The best way is to buy a separate copy. I also tried playing on my lan with friends, but it was not possible, not even with self burnt copies of ptw. It crashes too often.

Sad they did not put some option like Blizzard's "spawn" on the disk, where you install a MP-only version on the other PCs in the lan and where you need only one original cd.

Legally you are allowed to make 1 backup (if you live in the right country).

So just use your legally entitled backup. HOWEVER anti-pirating features on CD's often ignore your entitlements, and CD cracks seem the only way.

I don't about in the US, but in Australia mod chips and CD cracks can be used IF the device's purpose is not to play pirated software.

I dont see why you can't use your backup, I mean, who is going to buy two copies of the same game for the one household, but the law is the law :(. Maybe you could contact Infrogrames and arrange a multi-copy liscence like what M$ does with office applications. I would attempt to do that if I were holding a LAN or something. I will look further into multi-liscensing.

Disc jockeying works fine.

On mine I can use my Civ3 CD and my PTW CD so I can run PTW on two computers with no hacked exe or disc jockeying ;)

With most programs, you can create a back-up copy of your games legally. But you cannot use the programs on two different computer simultainiously. So long as one is being used and the other is not, it should be legal.

bobgote puts on his eyepatch and parrot.

seriously tho, if you're using it and you're the owner of the game, you should be able to play MP on a network with others without everyone buying the game. i have a solution, but i shall not speak of such things here :) apparently we're against such rot.

My partner and I sit back to back with a LAN on the home pcs and play MP to our hearts content. Had to create the Australians (off the American model) so that we could role-play a bit, too.

Use your CIV3 disc to start the game on the first computer and the PTW disc to start it on computer number two,
