When you are the first to unlock a technology that reveals a new strategic resource, you can be sure AI will ask to trade some of it the next turn. In my opinion it doesn't make sense a civilization asks for something they haven't discovered yet.

Suggestion : AI must unlock the required technology that reveals a new strategic resource before asking to trade for it.

Unlocking a strategy resource isn't the same as knowing there's a new strategy resource. They might know about something but not know about the method to produce it or where to look for, thus would try to import it if they can.
And this would add nothing to gameplay.

Most of us don't know how to mine metals and develop plastic from oil, but we can still use metal tools and plastic containers. I don't see the gameplay or realism benefit.

a better proposal imo would be that the AI just won't ask for a strategic resource that they have no use for. Asking for oil when they don't have any units or buildings or anything that actually uses oil is just stupid.

but iirc there's some reason that this isn't practical to do?

I think your proposal is similar to the proposal here.

The best example is iron, you can discover and connect iron long before civs have invented swordsmen. OP's suggestion would make it so civs won't buy iron unless that civ has bronze working, while yours would say they cannot buy it without iron working. I think both would be improvements, though iron is the only one that would matter that much IMO.

You can, however, unlock planes without access to oil, or helicopters without access to aluminum.

The AI should not pay for strategics (Impossible!) if they can't use them.

Timestamp post to arrange all the threads in a neat order.
