2 Questions - about leaders and foreign advisor

2 Questions:

1 Why do my elite units never become leaders? I have some that have won >40 combats - surely it is about time some of them did!

2 I can play a game with 15 other civs and my foreign advisor only ever shows 7 or 8 on the advisor screen. If I kill one, then there is a gap - no more appear. I have contact with all the civs, though...

Any ideas? Thanks!!!

I've noticed that militaristic civs get a huge bonus on promotions and leaders. Maybe doubled chance?
About that foreign advisor screen, it's like that bc the game isn't made for 8+ civs.
Use shift-right click or something like that. There are many threads talking about that.

Thanks!!

I'll give it a try & report back!:goodjob:

Odds of getting a leader when an elite unit wins a combat are 1 in 16. Militaristic civs have a 1 in 12 chance. Once you get a leader, build an army with him. Win one battle with that army and you will be able to build the Heroic Epic. That increases your chances of getting future leaders dramatically. Having at least one victory with an army also allows you to build the Military Academy. With the academy you can build armies without a leader.

Hold down shift and right click on any portrait (including blank ones) in the foreign advisor screen to select the civ you want to appear there.

I have another question. Do leaders pop up more commonly on higher difficulty? It seems to me that they do. Also can you have more than one leader at a time? I never seem to be able to get another one until I use the first one to rush build or build an army with it.

They shouldn't be more common on higher levels. As far as I can tell from the editor there's no variability for that per level. Then again, the editor doesn't show everything available.

It is possible to get multiple leaders. I never have but there are quite a few people who have reported getting new leaders when they already had one.

:king: Thanks guys!
The portraits thing is great (but not at all obvious!)
As for the leaders - I've still not managed to get one, but will put in some serious gaming this evening.

Mr Tom

I have played games where I seem to be at war the whole game  and still dont get a leader. And other games where I have got more than one leader. If I am just defending attacks from other civs, I dont get a leader but if I am taking their cities, it seems to happen more often. Just a theory....dont know if there's anything in it other than coincidence :D

The prereq for Military Academy is Military Tradition and 5 barracks, unless the documentation is wrong.

Yes, you can have multiple leaders. Plan ahead. I usually save one for a rush-build later in the game.

I have gotten Leaders on defense, too. Try a militaristic civ.

I've had a few leaders now & have some comments which may be useful:

Chance of a leader - always 1/16 or 1/12 no matter what level you're playing at. However - on a higher level, you'd expect to see more combat, and when at war, for the enemy to throw a greater number of units at you. Ergo - more frequent leaders!

Also, I never get a leader when fighting barbarians or eradicating their villages - only enemy civ's, so one strategy may be to get a stack of your units up to elite by fighting barbarians before sending them off to war!

With armies, Civ just got a whole lot more fun!
