Just to report - I have been playing cIV for about 90min now and had 2 crashes, one while building my second city and one while loading an autosave game. The computer just rebooted and I could proceed normally after that. 
WinXP SP2, 3000+, Radeon 9500 (which I don't think is the problem in this case).
