W00t. Go me.

What was an "Extraordinary Event" and whom would use the term?
almost sounds a bit like churchill... but for some stoopid reason I recognise this, but its on the tip of my tounge so to speak and i cant quite think of it.

The event was Normandy landings, but I have no idea who used it.

normady? could have been Monty, no no wait... it could have been Eisenhower yeah thats my guess

OK then. I'll say Monty.

I'll say Rommel, just because it seems something he'd say when told about the scale of the predicament he found himself in....

yeah, that sounds good to me, probally when he saw the normandy beaches and wanted them mined to all hell

Well, we were all wrong. Just had a PM from Nonconformist

Hi, Cruddy, sorry, but I have to pm you about the quiz.
I set a question,a nd haven't revealed the answer. The reason is because I have asked to be banned for a month, so I can revise for my exams (this place is damn addicting).

So I'm gonna pm you the answer, and you can restart the quiz, just post the answer, quoted from me.

The answer is that is was a euphamism used by Soviet Commissars for various "traitorous" acts. Examples of Extraordinary Events included treason, crossing over or fraternising with the enemy, dissent, defeatism, and even drunkeness, or even pure incompetance.
NEddless to say, the penalties were severe.

According to the rules, whoever wants to post a new question can.

Was it the first ship ever sunk by a guided missle? :scan:

First warship... but as only one of attacking planes had an HS293 aboard, it may not have been.

If it isn't, I haven't a clue.

I thought the Italian battleship Roma, sunk off Sardinia on September 9, 1943, was the first warship sunk by a guided missile. I just learned something new.

Yes, Adler's question is ongoing. Roma was sunk after the Egret though.

dgfred is right, the HMS Egret was sunk by a Hs 293 anti ship guided missile launched by a Do 217 of KG 100 and was the first ship to be sunk by a guided missile.
Note: The Roma was sunk later and not with a guided missile but guided bombs (FritzX)

dgfred, your turn.

Adler

Who was the U-boat commander that sunk the largest (tons) warship in the
war :scan: ???

Are you sure it was a U-boat commander that bagged the biggest?

EDIT: I'm thinking of Shinano, 71,000 tons sunk by SS-395 Archerfish. 20th November 1944. Commanded by Captain Joseph F Enright.
