Today is an international day of mourning for those killed in the terrorist attacks on Tuesday.

In a few minutes we will hold a three minutes silence right across Europe. This will be at:
* 10.00am GMT
* 11.00am London time
* 12 Noon in most of the rest of Europe
* 6.00am EST ('Civ time')

To join in this moment of respect, please do not post to CFC during those three minutes.

"The 43 nations of the Council of Europe have called for all of their 800 million citizens to observe three minutes of silence on Friday. The silent tribute is scheduled to begin at 1000 GMT. The BBC will join the tribute by marking a three-minute silence across all of its networks and services. The plan for the three minute silence was initiated by the 15 nations of the European Union, who have declared Friday a national day of mourning."

No need to remove this topic. It is a good opportunity to tell about your 3 minute silence.

I was first here in the computer room, but when I noticed it was almost 12:00, we summoned some people to go down to the cafeteria and be silent in a public place as it probably wouldn't have succeeded in the computer room. Personally I thought about the story of Alcibiaties of Athenae.

Stopped working, walked to the window, stared outside for the full 3 minutes thinking about it. Radio and tv and trains were silent here. Saw cars drive by though.

The silence worked not just for us personally, those of us who are still alive, but I feel that it has also in some way helped those who were snatched from life on Tuesday.

After posting the first message in this thread, I closed down my Internet link and went downstairs to our Hof. I took a horn filled it with some of our best mead, and facing the altar, I took our ritual hammer and hallowed it. I held this horn aloft while waiting for the chimes of 11 o'clock. During the silence that followed the chimes, I poured some of the mead as an offering of respect to those passed, and drank a silent toast to them.

Then there crowded in visions of those killed, mostly standing now at peace. And one terrible vision came of a man falling to his death. Could I help this one man after the event? Somehow I knew I could, and time became no barrier, and I willed what healing I could give across to him. To me, it seemed to have an effect of peace.

Was this just me, making myself feel better for being otherwise so helpless? Or did I make a difference? I may never know.

I watched the TV that time. There was a terrible silence during 3 minutes all over France. The only sad thing was in Toulouse Capitole place, where people kept silence but still walked everywhere instead of standing.
Then in Paris, the presidential orchestra played the US anthem slowly, with a sad tone.
I heard that in UK the royal guard also did the same thing.
