.

i have to agree with everything you say Lord Olleus. im really excited to see the final iteration of the graphics as there's no doubt there will still be some changes to the final product (there were for civ 4 after all)

one thing that could stand to be adjusted is the rivers, they don't seem... 'natural' enough... they're too regular and geometric, not nearly as random and meandering as id have expected.

Absolutely. What I like the most about the graphics is the interface, menus and all the little things. It shows that they've really spent some quality time on that in Civ5. Civ4 was a good game, but left a lot to desire when it came to those aspects.

I agree almost 100%. I'm happy they aren't focusing on photo realistic graphics though as so many games do these days. I personally prefer stylized art much more (as in civ 5).

Yeah the art work is great, loving the graphics, I fell deeply and completelty in love as soon as I saw them, I can't wait to caress the soft imbrace that is Civ5.

As I said in another thread, the art style is fantastic.

I really like the art, but then, I like Art Deco in general (one of the big reasons for me to order the special edition in a 176 page book of Art Deco). It also gives a nice coherence to the game that would be missing with a more photo-realistic art style.

I love how they realized that alot of history is depressing (there words not mine) and that they picked a time when our society, as a whole, were looking forward with high hopes. They picked an optimistic style, and one of my faovrites, art deco. Its very clean and sleeck, which gives the player a good feeling when starting a fledging civ. Great choice overall :goodjob:

I've finally had the time (and bandwidth) to take a look at all the different screen shots and gameplay video of Civ 5, and I've been pleasantly surprised by how pretty it looks. It's not massively realistic, it doesn't focus on all the tiny details, but it's immersive and helps with the suspension of disbelief. For example, the map tiles are a little smoother than in Civ4, with the features blurring into each other slightly. The diplomatic screens do not make me feel for one second like I'm face to face with any of leaders, but they make me feel like I'm surrounded by the presence of that civ.

The sum of the effect isn't to make me feel like I'm there, but I feel like I'm reading a good book and their is a lot of character from the art.

When before civ4 came out, a lot of people were complaining that they were spending too much time on the graphics, making it 3D and not focusing on the game play. While they were proved wrong about the game play, they had a point about the graphics. The cartoony graphics of Civ4 did, before I got used to it, make the game a little less immersive. When I run an empire and declare war on my enemies and march to exterminate them, I don't want to see Montezuma waving strange cartoon feathers in front of me. That's why I really like the new, sleek art-deco-ish look. It just capture the atmosphere of the game better for me.

So a big thumbs up for firaxis here. Anyone else feel the same way about the artwork?

I also agree completely with you. The art deco style used in Civ5 adds a lot of atmosphere and is really pretty to see.
One of the things which i like more of the new art style is the interface.
If there was one thing which i never liked in Civ4 was unit interface or civilopedia where there was a zoomed in unit or building which was really ugly to see.
New icons of units, buildings and wonders look really gorgeous.

I love tha art and visuals of the game :)

On the new french site pics, rivers look quite renewed and nice!

Art style really is nice. Terrain, leaders and UI is the best part so far imo. But that french site also had a picture which really showed that some improvement is needed. Look at the great wall and notice:

- How horrible it is when it's placed right on the river (top)
- The intersection river/road/wall where the bridge is on the top left
- Where the wall meets the pyramids (bottom)
- How generally bad it merges with the terrain.

Hopefully most of details such as that is improved in the final product :)

Yes, congratulations to the art team. The design is fantastic and I especially love how well thought out the reason for choosing art deco is.

I trust the art team that even at lower setting the game will be enjoyable. They did an amazing job at this and I know they will for us on lower settings :)

Yes, I also noticed this picture on Arioch's site:

I hope they put in some effort so that the road actually goes through the gates rather than under the wall.
