5 favorite/ least favorite war and peace themes

Gao Shan Liu Shui 高山刘水 (tall mountains ??drown??)
Also very graceful. Semi-off-topic, can't stand it when chinese restaurant don't play classical chinese music.

Can't stand at all:
Aztec chanting thing. It's ok the first time, but it just plays over and over and over

Agree. But the name is actually '高山流水', which means something like 'Grand Mountains and Flowing Water'.

We used to own a lot of land in the past so it's not that odd actually.
Even to this day we still hold some influence in the Caribbean but we also used to claim land on the North-American eastern coast, South-American northern coast near the Caribbean, pretty much all of Indonesia and South Africa.

But yeah, we let them become independent/sold of land because we are just that chill. ;)

On that note, I really like all the music, have no distinct favorites aside from the Polynesia peace theme which is really nice.

I realise the netherlands held massive tracts of land in africa and in the east. I was refering to the time of William the slilent and (to a much lesser extent, seeing as how he kicked the everloving sh*t out of a good portion of europe) william of orange, when the Netherlands WAS a small upstart nation ready to take on the world.

Favourite:

Peace theme:
- England (hands down. the best civilization soundtrack for both peace an war theme. it feels so patriotic and royal)
- Indonesia ( I usually don't like my own country trad song, but Firaxis really did a great job at mixing the gamelan sound with the rest of the component. It's just feel exotic!)
- Greece ( a very calming song, that Harp sound is just bang on!)
- Sweden ( a great song with a cheerful instrumental touch. I feel like in medieval time everytime I listen to this song)
- France ( just love it! don't know why)

War Theme:
- England ( feel very scottish, the song is just badass!)
- Ottoman ( I like the composing of the song itself, even I like the original song one)
- Shosone ( a very energetic score! feel like shoshone's army is marching down)
- Spain ( extremely cool sensation, not a so terrifying song but it's fun to hear)
- Zulu (just love it! very amazing scores)
- Brazil ( Brazilian will destroy you while you were dancing to song )

Least favourite:

Peace Theme:
- Denmark ( not bad,but very boring)
- Babylon (boring.......)
- Aztec (repetitive..that's all)
- Askia (perfect for sleeping)
- Brazil (just okay)

War Theme:
- America (meh...there is nothing tickle me)
- Japan (it's a very terrifying song,it's good, but I just don't like personally)
- Portugal (boring)
- Greece (i think everyone will agree with me)
- Aztec (the worst in my opinion)

I'm Indonesian and nooooo, it's not because you guys are chill. We were faced with hundred of bloody war and slaved with no humanity. We became an independent country because we won the war from the second Dutch military aggression (happened after WW II) and made a peace treaty afterwards

Was amused to read my older post in this thread. My current picks would be quite different! In particular I've learned to love the Songhai peace score which is just beautiful. And then there's BNW...

This is what it would look like now:

Favourite Peace:
1. Songhai
2. England
3. Carthage
4. Huns
5. Sweden

Favourite War:
1. England
2. Brazil
3. Carthage
4. Germany
5. Indonesia

Least Favourite Peace:
1. Babylon
2. Maya
3. Egypt
4. Polynesia
5. Aztecs

Least Favourite War
1. Siam (I dunno why I hate this so much... I think I must hear it an awful lot in my games )
2. Babylon
3. Maya
4. Denmark (sounds too much like the French war music... more on that later)
5. France (as I said in my previous post: a little too obvious and clichéd)

Overall the England score is probably my favourite, with Carthage not far behind. Least favourite is Babylon followed by Maya.

I was looking to create a similar post myself today but then I discover this thread. Since there are too much awesome music we should make top 10 lists though...

Favorite themes

Peace

Honorable Mention: Arabia (6th next to Byzantines and Romans but really should be mentioned)
5. Byzantines (Tie with Rome. Beautiful chorus.)
5. Rome (Tie with Byzantines. Feels classy enough to make me feel like a Roman in the Empire's finest years hoping for eternal and infinite flourishment.)
4. Songhai (very underrated as mentioned above. Very well designed civ when it comes to aesthetics.)
3. Ethiopia (I just like everything from Ethiopia in this game.)
2. Egypt (another underrated one.)
1. Mongols (captures the magic of the Eastern world, the nomadic and rough lifestyle of the Mongol people, the tragedy and legacy of Genghis Khan, the brave expansion of the Mongol Empire.)

War

5. Japan (took me ages to start liking it. It has a great Samurai feel into it.)
4. Sweden (Tie with Ottomans. "Overpowered" is the best word to describe it...:goodjob:)
4. Ottomans (Arguably better than the peace one which is already top-tier. Tie with Sweden.)
3. Brazil (Best of BNW soundtrack. Evil samba? Pedrobear? Bring it on!)
2. Spain (Knightly and active.)
1. Ethiopia (3000 years of Ethiopian history and last independant African native state stare into you, European invader...)

LEAST Favorite themes

Peace
5. Venice (Well there's a European feel into it, and Enrico Dandolo's old age, could be done better though...)
4. Poland (Badly remixed Christmas carol.)
3. Korea (Sounds like Korean instruments randomly put together without really trying hard.)
2. Aztecs (Boring.)
1. Inca (Sounds like a song for children.)

War
5. Morocco (Poorly done civ when it comes to aesthetics.)
4. India (Gandhi knows his peace-loving armies perform the worst war anthems.)
3. Germany (Awesome peace theme, but this one is bland. I was expecting a fierce war music along the lines of the Prussian military tradition and Nazi supremacy.)
2. Korea (I don't hear Arirang anywhere and practically a worse version of Korean instrument mixture.)
1. Songhai (Awesome peace theme, but not creepy at all and just plain poor.)

Least Favourite War
1. Siam (I dunno why I hate this so much... I think I must hear it an awful lot in my games )

Oh and I forgot Siam on my list.

Favorite:
Peace
5) Poland
4) Ethiopia
3) England
2) Arabia
1) Sweden

Sweden's peace theme is probably the best in the game; I love the point when it "breaks down" and goes all great and epic-y. Arabia's theme is the same: it starts out slow and quiet but builds and builds until it just gets outrightly amazing. England's theme makes me think of the British Empire (which is appropriate) and "I Vow to Thee, My Country" is a great song to start with, while Ethiopia's theme feels appropriate for a Civ that is underestimated but super powerful (which basically sums up the Ethiopian Empire.) Finally, Poland's theme fits that civ so well. Indonesia and Spain get honorable mentions.

War
5) America
4) The Ottomans
3) Arabia
2) Brazil
1) England

A little bit harder to find war themes I really like; both America and the Ottomans have good ones, though. Arabia's isn't as strong as their peace theme, but it has an interesting "feel" to it. Hard to trump Dom "James Bond" Pedro's war theme, but England's just barely edges it with a tune that makes me think of soldiers marching.

Least Favorite:
Peace:
5) Germany
4) Songhai
3) Japan
2) Byzantium
1) Russia

Germany's theme is okay, but it's still pretty dull. The Songhai's just goes nowhere, while I'm not fully sure Japan has a peace theme. Byzantium and Russia both have exceedingly dull choral pieces.

War:
5) Germany
4) Songhai
3) Russia
2) Byzantium
1) Denmark

I'm sorry, for a warmonger civ Germany REALLY needs a better theme. The Songhai's war theme is no better than their peace, and the same goes for Russia and Byzantium. And the winner of the "Worst War Theme" trophy is...Denmark! Have a song that's at least vaguely Viking-like, not something as utterly dull as *falls asleep*.

War Themes:

1. Indonesia

Man, I love this tune. The Indonesian war theme is excellent. Nice mix of European/Asian instrumentals.

2. Ottoman

Badass tune. A bit slow at first but it really starts to pick up afterwards.

3. Brazil

Even at war, Brazil is still partying!

2. Greece war: massive problem since I have to hear this every game Alexander is in.
The Greek war theme is based on the oldest complete recorded composition in existence; a real Greek song written in ~100 BC. I'm not enough of a music expert to know for sure, but it sounds like it might be written with un-tempered notation (the way the Greeks understood music), which makes it sound strange and slightly off key to a modern listener.

No least favorites, not worth it.

War
1) Zulu - UuuuuShaka! Epic singalong ensues with impi's yelling and... do I hear a South African concertina? A powerful theme which will lead the Zulu to world domination some day.

2) England - Most popular Civ V theme by YouTube views for good reasons, the epic build-up to that great flute solo gives me chills every time. Doesn't resemble I Vow to Thee much though, but we'll get to the peace theme.

3) Brazil - Most popular BNW theme by YouTube views for good reasons, lots of James Bond jokes in the comments. Funky Brazilian war theme with a great beat and catchy repeating motif.

4) Maya - Chillingly menacing and dissonant intro with bombastic brass parts and some sweet melancholic moments.

5) Russia - So powerful that it could've made Napoleon and Hitler rethink their invasion plans. Builds up to a gigantic climax that sends chills down my spine on max volume, especially with that famous Prokofiev motif epically poking its head around the corner.

But there are so much more great war themes... so here's five more.

6) Shoshone - Great beat, once again building up to an epic composition with simple yet grand brass and flute motifs.

7) Carthage - Once again, chills when the tenor in the choir raises his voice and the brass start kicking in at full volume. Bombastic song with a fittingly melancholic ending.

8) Indonesia - Just yesterday I was listening to this song when my train arrived at its destination and right when the climax (you know the part) started, I stepped out at the train station. Felt like conquering the entire city right there. Great beat too.

9) Oceania - I KU WA! Great use of the steel guitar and the main motive (E - E G G E G - G E G G E) is lots of fun.

10) Celts - Gets better every second, with actually a little of the majesty as heard in the peace theme. Speaking of peace themes:

Peace
1) Oceania - The music you want to hear at the beginning of your summer vacation. Majesticly relaxing.

2) England - This theme actually went a bit viral, it's used in a tribute to Winston Churchill with over a million view on YouTube and of course everybody in the comment section is argueing instead of praising this song. Brilliantly moving and probably the song most resembling the original version of all.

3) Celts - This could a movie theme to a mainstream movie like Brave or Braveheart, it's full of highlandic wonder and majesty with a grand recurring theme.

4) Poland - A very nice and happy theme. It's based on a christmas song after all.

5) Korea - Actually laughed when I first heard this, it's very quirky and that's part of the charm.

Thank you, Geoff Knorr and Michael Curran, for these great and well-researched compositions.

Favorite Peace:
1. England
2. Arabia
3. Ethiopia
4. Ottoman
5. Assyria

Favorite War:
1. Portugal
2. England
3. Brazil
4. Venice
5. Ottoman

Least Favorite (either/both):
1. Germany (both)
2. Aztec (both)
3. America (peace)
4. Polynesia (war)
5. China (peace)

I don't really have problems with any of the war themes so I'll just do peace:

Favorite peace:
5. Songhai
4. Indonesia
3. Maya
2. Polynesia

1. Celts

A gap between 2 and 1 because I think Celts is just absolutely on another level of beautiful

Least favorite peace:
5. China
4. Ethiopia
3. Russia
2. Austria
1. India

Favorite

Peace
5. Genghis Khan - Mongolia
4. Gustavus Adolphus - Sweden
3. Theodora - Byzantium
2. Maria - Portugal
1. Casimir III - Poland

War
5. Pedro II - Brazil
4. Gustavus Adolphus - Sweden
3. Gajah Mada - Indonesia
2. Queen Dido - Carthage
1. Elizabeth - England

Least Favorite

Peace
5. Washington - America
4. Hiawatha - Iroquois
3. Catherine - Russia
2. Bismarck - Germany
1. Nebuchadnezzar - Babylon

War
5. Napoleon - France
4. Washington - America
3. Catherine - Russia
2. Hiawatha - Iroquois
1. Nebuchadnezzar - Babylon

Peace:

1) Portugal
2) Huns
3) Brazil
4) Byzantium
5) England

War:
1) Portugal (an underrated civ with and underrated and very sinister war theme)
2) England (a terrifying display of patriotism)
3) Huns (even more than the Mongols, it gives off a sense of "the horde is coming! the horde is coming!")
4) Morocco
5) Indonesia

There aren't any I particularly dislike. Both of Venice's are mildly annoying because they are not remotely Venetian despite Venice having a strong musical tradition. I find Brazil's war theme to be highly overrated, but I don't particularly dislike it.

Peace

1)Mongolia
2)Ottomans
3)Austria
4)Arabia
5)Celts

War:
1)Poland
2)Ottoman
3)Zulu
4)England
5)France

And the winner of the "Worst War Theme" trophy is...Denmark! Have a song that's at least vaguely Viking-like, not something as utterly dull as *falls asleep*.

They should re-mixing Skyrim main theme for Denmark war theme :D

The Greek war theme is based on the oldest complete recorded composition in existence; a real Greek song written in ~100 BC. I'm not enough of a music expert to know for sure, but it sounds like it might be written with un-tempered notation (the way the Greeks understood music), which makes it sound strange and slightly off key to a modern listener.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xERitvFYpAk <-- Seikilos Epitaph
I think it's all based on the Greek peace theme which has a great tune, but the war theme isn't as good as the peace theme

8) Indonesia - Just yesterday I was listening to this song when my train arrived at its destination and right when the climax (you know the part) started, I stepped out at the train station. Felt like conquering the entire city right there. Great beat too.

Actually the composer inspired by batman song, check out 0:48 - 2:08 ..maybe LOL

It's gonna be hard to pick only 5 favorites...

Favorite

Peace:

5. Babylon - A weird, back to the basics song, which fits the Civ perfectly.
4. Mongols - Took me a while to take a liking to this theme, mostly because it depends so much on the build up. New instruments are stacked on top of the base rhythm over time. I can appreciate that.
3. Celts - A melancholic and humble tune. I used this as my wake up alarm for a long time. Works great!
2. Poland - Majestic and epic, just the way I like it. It was a tie between Poland and England, but Poland gets the edge because it's also Christmas related.
1. Sweden - Full-on epicness. Like others have said, it builds up and then just bursts, spraying awesomeness straight into your ear canals.

War:

5. Japan - A very unique theme. I like how the pace increases over time.
4. Persia - Fear, despair, sadness. These words come to mind with the Persian war theme. Whereas other themes focus more on agression and intimidation, the Persians seem rather sad they're going to war.
3. Spain - War is just another fiesta for the Spanish, it seems.
2. Inca - I didn't like this theme initially, but it turns out it's great song with lots of build up.
1. Shoshone - The Shoshone have had enough. Their land was taken, their people were humiliated and every promise has been broken. The tribes will unite, and strike fear in the hearts of those who wronged them!

Least favorite

Peace:

5. Iroquois - I don't think this theme is that bad. It just ends up near the bottom of my list.
4. Russia - Just doesn't sit well with me. I feel like it goes on for too long.
3. Denmark - Boring. Doesn't do the vikings justice.
2. Austria - Some parts sound like a joke. Like the background music they would use when someone slips on a banana peel.
1. Morocco - Boring and confusing. No real melody or rhythm that I can follow. Just seems like random stuff thrown together.

War:
5. Siam - Just a weaker, more repetitive version of the peace theme.
4. Ethiopia - Not too bad, just not one of my favorites.
3. Germany - This one's not... great. I don't think it's incredibly bad either though.
2. Morocco - Just like the Moroccan peace theme, it's just not catchy enough.
1. Iroquois - Although menacing, it is incredibly repetitive and gets boring real fast.

Let's see what's changed since BNW...

Favorite Peace Themes:

5. Poland: A very powerful and stately song. It's just really nice.
4. Russia's moved down to here.
3. Arabia's moved down to here.
2. Assyria: This song feels really majestic and mysterious. Very soothing and beautiful.
1. Still Japan.

Favorite War Themes:

5. Poland: It manages to keep the powerful and stately feel of the peace theme, but also manages to make it darker, more threatening, and more sorrowful at the same time. A fantastic concoction of moods that manage to complement each other superbly.
4. Brazil: Obviously this has to be somewhere in the top. So good.
3. Still Japan.
2. Still England.
1. Still Carthage.

---

Least Favorite Peace Themes:

5. Siam's here now.
4. Morocco: There's not much going on in this song besides the nice vocals.
3. Still Aztecs.
2. France is here now.
1. Poor Denmark.

Least Favorite War Themes:

5. Still Iroquois.
4. Still Korea.
3. Still Siam.
2. Still Austria.
1. Still Denmark.

I don't really have any least favourite tunes, either because I don't remember them after I listen to them or I don't bother remembering them. The tunes I mention are the tunes I remember because they have an awesome melody and/or awesome harmonics.

So here are my favourite themes:

War:
- Poland - a really epic tune, lots of variation of the same motiff. Love every part of it.
- Japan - not as good as Poland but I still remember it as early as Vanilla.
- Siam - not sure if the tune I have in mind is specifically the Siamese war theme or a general Asian civ war theme. I remember this tune started when I played as Siam whilst at war, especially when I loaded the game.

Peace:
- Shoshone - lovely native American flute tunes.
- Ethiopia - nice flute section.
- Portugal - nice guitar section.
- England - you hear this tune (shortened version) at least twice a year if you stay tuned to Australia's war memorial days.
- Maya - it's a tad catchy. :p

Also can we mention general themes? I like all the western peace themes and some of the Asian peace themes.

I might repost this list later on to add more to my list if there are some other tunes that I remember/listen to.
