Wow from King to Deity! I feel the pressure...

I settled in place. Researched animal husbandry-mining; what? no horses? switched to archery then pottery-writing. I scouted around and right away I realized this is a jam-packed map. I know I can't out - REX the AI on deity so war it is. It's just a question of who is the closest AI. No horses means archer rush.

For policies, used God-King until pantheon is founded then switched to Agoge and Ilkum for the +50% to classical ranged and melee and +30% towards builders, respectively.

Built warrior, builder, settler, plopped the campus district then switched to slinger spam. Second city built a slinger then archers mostly.

I dow'd on Cleo who was north of me, since Freddy wanted to be chummy. While on my way to the front, made contact with Scythia and Russia. Scythia had 2 horses already by that time. I thought about attacking Scythia instead, but I was afraid I'll leave my cities unprotected. With Cleo, the mountains mostly protected me from the east. If I didn't declare war I knew they would. I made sure I was ready. I got 5 archers ready before Cleo can field her UU. Freddy being in between Russia and Scythia needed a friend and declared friendship early.

I started on a campus district on both cities I founded as soon as writing became available. I finished the district in the capital though after the smoke cleared from the first war with Cleo. As soon as I had 3 campus districts, I prioritized IZ's in every other city that was conquered or newly found, when it was available of course.

The AI was REXing pretty well this time. I took 3 cities from Cleo, at first. I captured Buenos Aires which was sandwiched between Tomyris and Freddy. When I had cats I finished Cleo off, so 5 total cities captured. Settled 4, and I have 2 more settlers waiting to fill the gaps. In order to have horses I had to settle in between the iron near Brussels and the mountain. Crappy spot but I feel the need for strategic resources in this game. At turn 100 or 102 I had 9 or 10 cities, I think.

I used the +50% prod for settlers a lot, also +50% to ranged and melee and switched alternately to builder policy.

I really could've used Buenos Aires, being a production city state, but I knew the AI would just take it. So I beat Freddy to it, even blocking him off. Later I found Stockholm to the south in a crappy spot. I put my envoys toward the science state.

Barbarians didn't stand a chance in this game. Freddy dow'd on Tomyris but fell back, then dow'd on Peter later. Norway and Rome are also on the far eastern side of this island/continent. I'm teching up before the inevitable fight with Scythia who has the most land. I'm thinking bombards and knights should do the trick, but gotta make sure I have tech lead if things go bad.

I was surprised how many cities the AI settled and how quickly. Peter had 9 or so cities I think and Tomyris maybe 12 or more.

First ever attempt at Diety, I'm terrified. Let's go.

Spoiler Story so far... :
So I get excited for the new GotM. I know that it's going to be Dominion and it's time to try my hand at some real war. Open up the thread and... DIETY. %#&@!

At least it's America. That +5 bonus on the home continent will surely help me out and bee-lining the bottom side of the Tech tree will get me Rough Riders early. Aside from that, WAR WAR WAR!

OK, so I open up the save and take a look. Decided to settled 1SE of the starting spot on a hunch. First few builds were a Slinger (just in case) and a Scout. After that, I decided to settle a city up to the north so I built a Settler.

And just as my Settler is about to get to the spot (about 2 turns away), Cleopatra settles it. OK *****, you're in for war. I decided to send that settler eastward to found Boston because I needed a coastal city anyway and this one would snag both tiles of the Great Barrier Reef. I built a few more Warriors, upgraded my Slinger into an Archer and declared war on Egypt. Meanwhile, Germany had taken Buenos Aires and I was hoping that I'd get some breathing room before an assault.

After a few turns, Memphis, Egypt becomes Memphis, TN. And that's when Barbarossa attacked. I was trying to get a religion at the time but I stopped the Shrine and went for Walls instead. In addition, moving Washington 1SE actually gave me more room. With my Encampment (2N of Washington), I managed to push off the German assault and began preparing for my own counter attack.

Took a 2nd settler west and founded Philadelphia. At that point, I was able to upgrade my Warriors into Swordsmen and took three of them (along with a Battering Ram) up to Buenos Aires. Liberated BA from the Germans (because Argentina always happens to like Nazis and that is a no-no) and Barbarossa sued for peace.

Now, I'm currently steamrolling my way up to Ra-Kadet after taking Thebes. Charleston is somewhere south of The City Of Brotherly Love and Deity is turning out to be not stupidly difficult. Just really hard.

Spoiler Questions :

- Where did you settle your city?
Not in place. Went 1SE of the original spot on a hunch. Helped out during the later German invasion around T45 or so.

- What did you research and which policies did you choose and why?
Researched Astrology first hoping for a religion. After that, quick Encampment in Washington (so Bronze Working). At this point, I'm pretty much beelining my way to Rifling. As for policies, I'm playing it by ear but aiming for the Military ones early.

- What was your build order?
Slinger, Scout, Settler for sure. Got up an Encampment and Holy Site soon after that in Washington.

- Who started the first war? Were you ready if it wasn't you?
Actually, I did with Germany DOWing me a few turns later. Declared war on Egypt to take Memphis (this was around T40 if I'm correct) and just as I took Memphis, Germany declared on me. At that point, I had finished researching Masonry but I hadn't built Ancient Walls. Doing that immediately allowed me to repel Germany's attack.
As of T101, I've initiated three wars (1x with Germany, 2x with Egypt) and each one has been wildly successful where I take exactly what I want and nothing more. Memphis from Egypt, Buenos Aires (liberation) from Germany and I'm currently steamrolling my way to Ra-Kadet.

- How soon did you build a District? Which ones did you prioritize?
I believe that I had an Encampment on the north side of the big river by about T35. Holy Site followed quickly. Boston is building a Harbour, Memphis is working on an Encampment and that's it for right now.

- Did you emphasize expansion? How many cities have you built/captured in the first 100 turns?
Founded 3 + Washington, captured 2 by T101. I say T101 and not T100 because I took Thebes on T101. With Thebes, I have two coastal cities (Thebes and Boston), two cities in the mainland (Philadelphia and Charleston) and a well protected Capital.

- How did you play your governance cards, priorities?
Pretty much whatever would be most useful at the time. Agoge has seen a lot of use along with Conscription.

- What City-States did you meet and which ones did you cultivate to your side?
Buenos Aires had to be liberated from Germany and all of my Escorts have been going to Valletta.

- Were your neighbors peaceful?
Egypt and Scythia have had a war, Russia and Norway have been to war and that's about it outside of my shenanigans.

- How were the Barbarians?
Pretty much non-existent. Excellent for me.

- Any surprises?
Yeah, one. If you're not playing as China/Arabia/Russia, forget about founding a religion on Diety. I rushed to try and get one and ended up with squat. 2K needs to change that a bit just so that a religion is possible.

My oh my! I'm going to count myself fortunate if I come out of this with a victory (and it certainly won't be a quick one), after what had seemed at first to be a promising start. Settled in place and met Frederick within a few turns, so I kept my warrior near hoping to catch the settler he had in his capital sneaking out. Meanwhile, I built a scout and headed north, met Cleopatra's unescorted settler, which quickly became an American settler. I built two slingers and an archer in the capital to head up Cleo's way, and settled the formerly Egyptian unit between the bananas and deer north of Washington. I finally caught that German settler moving out with several warriors nearby but none actually protecting it. I nabbed it and soon, with a built settler, had four cities active. I sent my main army, now four archers and a warrior, north to make their way toward Ra-Kedet. As they approached, I noticed an awful lot of Scythian units wandering in my borders and suspected Tomyris of having less-than-benevolent intentions. My army, halfway to Egypt and fighting their way through barbarians to get there, gave that mission up and headed back south to defend my budding empire. Sure enough, on turn 38 Scythia declared war and she had plainly been preparing for some time, as he had a huge force of horsemen and horse archers interspersed with warriors. On the upside, my boundary cities were in fairly defensible spots. On the downside, the terrain was such that I couldn't bring much force to bear on the attackers with my archers. She sent three massive waves of attackers over twenty turns or so before I finally cleared enough of the Scythians away to begin my own advance, and it took me until turn 78 just to take Buenos Aires, which Scythia had earlier conquered--just as my forces got there, she got her walls up.

I took another of her cities, west of Buenos Aires, and now blundered. I had my choice of accepting a fairly good peace offer from Tomyris and then turning south to focus on Aachen, or spurning the peace overtures and continuing my conquest of Scythia. Unfortunately I chose the latter, and ended up losing a catapult and a well-promoted archer to a nasty crossfire from her city west of Hattusa, and its encampment. Terrain and the impassability of Hattusa constrained my movement more than I'd realized and I ended up with an unwise decision. On turn 98, I decided that I had no choice but to accept her rather less generous peace offer and rebuild, regroup, and redirect myself for Germany before turning after the Scythians again.

- What did you research and which policies did you choose and why? Animal husbandry, archery, mining, pottery, writing, bronze working, irrigation, masonry, iron working to begin with. I lost track of order after that but currently also have wheel, engineering, construction, machinery, horseback riding, currency, apprenticeship, sailing, astrology, celestial navigation, and shipbuilding, and I'm researching stirrups. On civics, I started with Code of Laws, Craftsmanship, Military Tradition, Foreign Trade, Early Empire, State Workforce, and now have up to Military training, Defensive tactics, and Drama and Poetry, currently working on Feudalism.

- What was your build order? Scout, slinger, slinger, archer, settler, warrior, archer, spearman

- Who started the first war? Were you ready if it wasn't you? As shown above, Scythia started the first "real" war and I was not at all prepared.

- How soon did you build a District? Which ones did you prioritize? I placed campuses in my first two cities but delayed quite a while before building them. Built an encampment for Washington to sit in a mountain pass, once I realized that I had my hands full with Scythia. Both of my cities not at the front built commercial hubs first, and I'll be starting a harbor soon on the one that's closest to the coast (I have no coastal cities yet). I'd like to get some Industrial Zones up soon, but would prefer to place them in hexes I don't have yet, and I need my money for upgrading my army so far.

- Did you emphasize expansion? How many cities have you built/captured in the first 100 turns? Built four (two with captured settlers) and captured two more.

- How did you play your governance cards, priorities? Started with Discipline moved to Agoge soon as it became available, then to Conscription. Urban planning and I'm still using that (got the faith for my GoTS pantheon from the dyes in my second city.) Charismatic leader and Carvansaries once I switched to Oligarchy.

- What City-States did you meet and which ones did you cultivate to your side? I got single envoys to all I've met so far (Stockholm, Hattusa, Kabul, Valletta, and Yerevan). I allied Hattusa to give myself room to move during the Scythian fiasco but Cleo dropped another envoy there the next turn, making a tie again.

- Were your neighbors peaceful? So far, aside from Tomyris.

- How were the Barbarians? Annoying but not terribly so.

- Any surprises? The huge Scythian waves, a bit surprised I got through it without losing a city. If the AI were even as smart as barbarians, I should have been toast. Also the total lack of horses anywhere reachable for me to settle, so far. A couple of horsemen could have changed things a lot.

I'm still getting my legs on deity, only two victories at that level so far. I'm not at all sure that this one will be the third, but we'll see!

Hey!

I am usually not playing GOTM-s I prefer multiplayer but for some reasons I begun on this one. Ok, well after a 100 turns everyone denounced me, I have 5 cities, a religion, a great scientist (+250 science/mountain adj) ready to be activated between 5 mountains, and a small army consisting of crossbows, archers and spearman/warrior. I made 2 settles so far, my other two extra cities are from egypts exps. Tomyris already conquered Buenos Aires and Im 7 envoys with Stockholm. Oh and btw Im first in science.

- Where did you settle your city?
Well I settled it to the east along the coast/river on a flood plains tile, which wasnt very smart because it has almost no production, it can only produce me science and take away my amenities

- What did you research and which policies did you choose and why?
Well, I researched astrology quite fast because I wanted to grab a religion (now im the only one on this continent with a religion), then headed for writing then for crossbows with a small stop at apprenticeship. I usually dive into medieval era fast because the heurekas for anc/clas techs are easy to get.
- What was your build order?
Builder, Slinger, Slinger, Monument, Holy Site, Shrine, Prayers, Campus, Archer, Settler, Builder....
- Who started the first war? Were you ready if it wasn't you?
I did. I attacked Egypt and conquered his exp north to me. I had 2 archers and 1 warriors. It was enough to take it down, because I had barb horsemen helping me out.
- How soon did you build a District? Which ones did you prioritize?
Pretty soon, I had the holy site finished on turn 22. Then I get a campus on turn 47.
- Did you emphasize expansion? How many cities have you built/captured in the first 100 turns?
Well, yes and no. I didnt start to build a settler until like turn 60, but by the end of turn 100 I had 2 captures/2 exps. I mainly focused on military/infrastructure in the capital though.
- How did you play your governance cards, priorities?
That I dont remember I much. Im sure I was picking bonus strength versus barbs and +1 prod. For the other two cards after erarly empire I got (Oligarchy) conscription, +2 infl points, great sci points and i dont remember the economic card, it must have been +1 prod.
- What City-States did you meet and which ones did you cultivate to your side?
Buenos Aires and Stockholm, met a third one to the south by around turn 80 i guess. I have 7 envoys in Stockholm and Buenos Aires is currently occupied by Scythia.
- Were your neighbors peaceful?
Not at all. They all denounced me all the time. Even Germany and Russia. But I think thats fair because I declared two wars on Egypt and captured almost all of their cities... heading for the capital now. Im afraid my diplo relations backfire and penalize me on the long run.
- How were the Barbarians?
Well, I had no barbs to my east/west/south so I guess I was lucky. However, after capturing Egypts settle, the barbs became a problem and it took me more then 30 turns to clear my lands from their horsemen.
- Any surprises?
Im not used to city states falling in multiplayer so that was a surprise. I was also surprised that I managed to grab the only religion on my continent. And also of the barb horsemen which were really tough to fend off.

T100; Score 113, which is unfortunately lowest on map. I have 4 cities - 3 founded and 1 captured.

Oh my indeed! This is my first deity game and its showing. Like others, I thought I had a good start at T40, but its been very slow progress since then and I'm glad to still be in the game. Started early war with Cleo after she forward settled. Took Akhetatan T37. But started losing soldiers in rough terrain and accepted peace. By T56, Tomyris had taken Buenos Aries, which I liberated T83 after extended battling with my swordsmen, battleram, and archers against endless warriors, horsemen, and horse archers. The liberation was costly and 2 turns after liberating BA, Germany becomes its suzerain, which split my forces with no rights to passage in BA. So I took peace without advancing further and retreated to regroup. I've now moved bulk of army toward Cleo's realm, with crossbow, siege tower, swordsmen, and supporting cavalry. If I can't take some cities soon, I'll surely be a target for conquest from being the small fry on the continent. For my cities, Washington has Encampment and Industrial Zone - supplying troops and growing; New York and Charleston have walls and campus, and Akhe is focused on fundraising

- Where did you settle your city?
SIP. I wanted to keep all 4 stone resources within reach of Washington, and took Stone Circles as pantheon. Suspecting that choice is a waste because few reasons to use faith yet and of course I didn't found a religion.

- What did you research and which policies did you choose and why?
Archers early. After finding 2 iron sources, but only one horse, bee lined for Ironworking. Then headed to Machinery for crossbow. For civics, worked the top of the tree mostly and Political Philosophy, with Oligarchy in charge.

- What was your build order?
Slinger, builder, slinger, builder, Settler, Slinger, Builder, Settler, Encampment

- Who started the first war? Were you ready if it wasn't you?
I did, against Cleo after she settled too close to the north of Washington.

- How soon did you build a District? Which ones did you prioritize?
Encampment, but not very early - see build order. Followed soon by campus in two cities. Also added commercial center in captured city and IZ in Washington.

- Did you emphasize expansion? How many cities have you built/captured in the first 100 turns?
I wouldn't call 4 cities at T100 emphasizing expansion, but hoping to capture or build 2 - 3 more in next 30 turns.

- How did you play your governance cards, priorities?
Got pantheon, then shifted to support builders and melee/range. Took great general boost as early as possible and have one GG, but have switched to Great Scientist boost now.

- What City-States did you meet and which ones did you cultivate to your side?
Only met 4 so far due to limited exploration. Suz of both science CSs. Working on BA but Germany has its grips and is 1 envoy ahead. Only 1 earned envoy in Valletta.

- Were your neighbors peaceful?
No one attached me. But Cleo took my land and Tomyris was gathering soldiers when I started BA liberation campaign.

- How were the Barbarians?
Mild. One funny thing was that once I was finally able to set siege to BA, a barb horde of 4 erupted. But rather than attack weakened soldiers on either side of the battle, or the falling city of Buenos Aires, they attacked Hattusa's warrior bystanders, so had little impact on the war.

- Any surprises?
Yes, although I suspect this is what deity is all about. When battling Cleo and Tomyris, they never seemed to run out of soldiers. It was like the battle of New Orleans where they just kept a-comin. Once I got a city surrounded, it would fall, but my weakened melee troops were then set up of decisive deaths. Not all, but enough to make advancing difficult. Even on immortal, my experience has been that once the first city falls, the next are often easier. No such luck in the game thus far. Maybe Cleo will be different, or maybe I should bulk up more.

Well, I won't have an official submission this time. I was doing great with 5 cities in first 60 turns (1 initial, 3 captured cities, 1 captured settler) and on target to keep expanding as I was surrounding Aachen by turn 64. I didn't know about the Encampment bug -- basically as soon as the AI starts building an encampment, it can fire on troops while the encampment is being built. You can't attack it or pillage it. I don't know if this always happens after an AI city has ancient walls and then starts building an encampment or is an intermittent bug; beyond annoying to say the least when you don't know about it. First I put an archer on the space, then a heavy chariot; no affect and the 'ghost' encampment just kept firing on and killing troops that would otherwise be in a safe zone. I couldn't figure out why I was losing troops in my 'safe' zone while assaulting the German capital. I kept seeing the fire coming from the space, but couldn't figure out how to stop it or why I couldn't attack the 'ghost' encampment; kept me from focusing on destroying the Aachen city walls as I tried to figure this stupid bug out. Thought I was doing something wrong until I googled it. I could probably just get peace and start building military up again, but disgusted with the bug and affect it had. If I'd known about the insane bug I would have immediately gone for peace and/or retreated; 4 of 7 dead archers later...

Got DOW'd by Germany T14, but thanks to mountains and hills it was easily defended.
Stole an unescorted settler from Egypt with a scout that was attempting to forward settle me to the North.
Got a culture pantheon thanks to faith from a Tribal Village.
Took Aachen with Warriors and Archers
Took Râ-Kedet with Swordsman and Crossbowmen.

I am suzerain of Kabul and Stockholm. Egypt has taken Hattusa and Scythia Buenos Aires.
I am waiting for Civil Service to finish to upgrade 7 Heavy Chariots to Knights which I will send against the military weak Russia.
Scythia has a 1K army of Horsemen and cities of 40-50 CS. I will probably wait for Pikemen/Musketmen/Bombard to take her down. I captured another settler from Egypt which I am keeping for the discovery of Niter. Hopefully there is some nearby.

I got owned... Defeat on turn 47...

Met Germany, Scythia and Egypt pretty early on. Egypt sent an unescorted settler that turned into Boston and I had a small force of three archers and a warrior marching towards Egypt. Thought it was going pretty well. Scythia denounced me due to my war with Egypt and follow it up with a force of four horse and five warriors to Washington.

I'd been building a settler and Cincinnati came into being just as she DOW'd me. At this time, my force was nearly on Egypt's doorstep so I had no home guard.

I went for broke and kept the assault going on Egypt but she got her UU out and walls up so at that point I knew it was game over. I couldn't get my force back in time to prevent Boston's capture.

My first Deity game.

- Where did you settle your city? In place.
- What did you research and which policies did you choose and why? Focus on military tech. Shipbuilding, Ironworking, Currency, Engineering, Horseback Riding, Celestial Navigation
- What was your build order? Scout Slinger Slinger ..... I can't remember. Granaries were prioritized. When invading Egypt I had 3 archers, 2 spearmen, 1 swordsmen, and 1 new catapult. 1 Encampment and and financial district on the way.
- Who started the first war? Were you ready if it wasn't you? Egypt declared on me. I was surprised but ready.
- How soon did you build a District? Which ones did you prioritize? Late. an encampment.
- Did you emphasize expansion? How many cities have you built/captured in the first 100 turns? I was way too slow expanding. I have built 3, captured 2.
- How did you play your governance cards, priorities? Hmmm. Originally, discipline, urban planning. Then switched to Oligarchy: Agoge, Urban Planning, Charismatic Leader, Strategos.
- What City-States did you meet and which ones did you cultivate to your side? Stockholm is mine at +3. I'be met the rest on the continent, but BA was captured by Germany.
- Were your neighbors peaceful?

- How were the Barbarians? Only a few. A new hut popped behind me lines last turn.
- Any surprises? Should I be surprised that everyone has denounced me? After declaring war on nobody and giving all people access and friendship.

Spoiler Screenshot :

I've just been trying this challenge, and is my first one here, but I encountered a weird bug at T61. I was laying siege to Egypt and they started building an encampment. I had a unit already on the tile before the encampment was being built. Even though it is still under construction, the Encampment is able to attack my units and I cannot attack it back.

This has seriously turned the tide in my war with Egypt. Most frustrating! I've attached the save file if anyone wants to marvel at it. Ra-Kedet is to the north of the continent.

EDIT: Just read other posters here, and saw someone with the same bug. I might just ask for peace (Cleo was offering some nice deals), while I only have 1 archer dead, and come back later when the Encampment is built.

Turn 116. I have 8 cities (2 built, 1 from captured Egyptian settler, 2 from Egyptian conquest, 3 from Scythia). Fantastic defensive terrain but slow for offense until roads are built. Settled in place and built slingers for archer upgrades, sufficient to conquer Egypt. Attacking Scythia from North:- crushed their land units but capital has medieval walls and I need more knights! They also have frigates offshore which limits my angles of attack. Decision time:- I may make temporary peace and attack Germany who has weaker defences and will only get stronger as the game progresses. My people are barely content so I will need some amenities. IZ are now available so my production should ramp up fairly soon.
I am suzerain of Stockholm which has helped to keep science ticking over. I also have a campus in Washington. I made no attempt to found a religion but now have the Scythian religion in some of my conquered lands. Both Rome and Russia are spamming Apostles but neither has reached America yet.
Barbs have been surprisingly quiet, but I have only just established a 2 x trireme navy and may find them roaming the high seas.
I still have 2 civs to meet. I presume they are on the other “continent” if such a thing exists. Meeting 6 opponents by turn 55 was something of a surprise!

First deity game here. At turn 99 I have five cities: four settled (one with a stolen Egyptian settler) plus Aachen.

I first declared on Cleo to get her settler and tried to go after her capital with archers and warriors, but she got walls up just as I got my troops in place (after fighting through a bunch of barbs to get there), so I settled for a bunch of money, which paid to upgrade my warriors to swords and then my archers to crossbows. I liberated Buenos Aires from Barbarossa and then took Aachen. Scythia seemed the next logical target, with one city between Buenos Aires and her capital. But she has a lot of units and I may have to give up on her for now without taking any cities.

I'm not sure if I'll keep going with this game. I have limited time and I fear with all the units and cities it will become a slog. At the moment, I'm having more fun pursuing various steam achievements, but maybe I'll return in the new year.
