Hi there guys

I've only played the game once and I have the chance to found a corporation with my Great Merchant.

It is still unclear to me the basics about this new concept, so I come seeking for assistance to this temple of wisdom... :p

How do you make corporations work? I know that to expand them you need to build executives, but do you need to build branches in "every" single city of yours?

Which is the best place to found them?

How does it work with other civilizations? Is it worthy to enhance them in their cities?

Can you have more than one corporation in your civ?

Thanks!

Use the search functions, you'll find lots of discussions about Corporations.

DO NOT spread them to all your cities, it is not like religion spreading, the matinence can be crippling... try spreading them to other civs that don't have the resources to reap the benifits, then you'll get all the profits!

Found them in the city with Wall Street or another way to get alot of commerce

As stated before, the corp will give them benifits IF they have the neccesary resources

Yes, but competing corps can't be placed in the same city, such as the three food corps. There is a good graph on a thread that shows the competition, I forgot where it is though

IMO it isn't wise to found many corps, I usually stick with Ethanol and any corp that givs me a resource that I can't get

You could, theoretically, found every corporation somewhere in your empire, but you can never have two corporations in the same city that use any of the same resources. Since you can make a lot of money by founding corporations in cities with gold multipliers (i.e., wall st & banks, etc.), it would probably be better to only found a few in that city, and spread only those.

You probably DO want to spread your corporations to AI cities. The benefits are more or less balanced with the maintanence costs, but meanwhile you will get bonus gold for every branch in the world if you control the HQ.

You can only spread the corporations to players with at least one of the required resources, and only if they are not running the civic mercantilism or state property.

Aha... so that means if I'm well over them ahead (technologically speaking) I can't found branches in their cities....

To make the most of a branch you need to have a bank in that city?

Mmhhh.... it's not that easy...

How do you get a Great Merchant? In Warlords, they were perhaps my most common GP, but now I can't even get one the entire game... I can get basically every other type no problem, but merchants seem to elude me...

No, they don't need the TECH, just the RESOURCE, like copper, etc.

And the bank is just needed in the HQ city.

I am ALL ABOUT Great Merchants! Caste System is a surefire way to get a couple, plus Great Merchant wonders. Basically, just run lots and lots of Merchant specialists. Good for your economy, good for getting Great Merchants.

Oh, I never use Caste System... maybe that's why:lol:

To get a Great Merchant or any type of great person for that matter, just have buildings/wonders in a city that only produce that type. In other words don't mix the gene pool. For example a coastal city with the Great Lighthouse and a market with 2 merchant specialists will pop out a Great Merchant.

.

You sure it is THEY that need the resource? I thought it was supposed to be the Corporation founder that was supposed to have the resource... That's why in the last game I was importing 12 fish from various countries so I Could fuel my corporation spreading (to foreign cities).

Spreading corporations requires you able to pay the cost, and that it is a valid site for the corporation to have an effect. Since it is the city's owner's resources that the city effect depends on, and NOT the HQ owners, I'm pretty sure.
Check the foreign advisor to see what resources your rivals have. If you can spread to them, they should have at least one of the req. resources.
