What do you all make of the feature about the random generation of leaders that you can take back to a city to perform tasks?

i think it will be cool. i mean, it can't hurt. they will be able to form armies and stuff.... should be interesting

Nobody interested in this topic?

I guess that I will just have reply to myself like the sad loser that I am.

I think the leader idea is good, it is hard to comment too much without knowing more details of the implementation. I hope that you will be able to give your leaders names like Mongol Horde or Alexander the Great or Magaret Thatcher.

I think the idea has some interesting potential but like you said, until you know what it really does it's hard to judge.

I do think the ability to combine units into one fighting unit could be VERY cool if done right. Even if it's just 2 units you could combine defensive/offensive units, or double up the offensive units: a few double-dragoon armies might do some serious damage to even a walled city with muskets (unless of course the muskets are also doubled up!) Imagine a combined Armor/Mech infantry unit (or Mech/Howitzer - instant defense for an offensive weapon.)

OK, I'll bite (a week or so later):

I'm a little intrigued by the idea of a leader, but I have some questions.

(Firaxis? Are you listening?)

Will these leaders allow us to delegate some powers on the city level or with military affairs? Can we completely trust these leaders - both in terms of their competence (will they f

k up) or will they rebel and turn against us - forcing us to fight a civil war or suppress a rebellion that our neighboring nations will be able to take advantage of? Will they be able to bump us off, à la Julius Caesar?

All good questions. I like the idea, based on the small ammount of info available at the moment.

My understanding of this concept may be hazy... These leaders will allow one to combine units, as in adding Att/Def numbers? I assume these combos will be limited to units with the same HP/FP, or that the numbers will be suitably modified. Still, this does intrigue one. Suppose that the leader also imparts a special ability, like Alpine movement or Amphibious Assault? Now we're talking possibilities!

I'm guessing that the slowest unit's movement is used, but even so, this can make for some nasty combos, like Cannon-Musketeers(11-4-1), or Cavalry-Engineers(8-5-2). Hmmm. A leader that grants Paradrop, a Rifleman, and an Artillery...ouch!! An Ambhibious Knight-Pikemen group... I'm starting to like this concept...

"What do we want? Tickets to the Met, Broadway, the shops, civilization, man, that's what we're looking for. Oh, we may stumble along the way, take this fellow for instance. . . *BLAM*
Now was that civilized? Fun, yes, but in no sense civilized."

Yeah I've toyed with the idea of military and/or social "leader" types. Though I can admit frankly, though I've always kind of liked the idea, I've never come up with any concrete thoughts on what it could do. Though logically thinking, wouldn't a leader or historical persona be rather short-lived in terms of turns? I mean, Ceasar or some such person would only exist about 2-4 turns or something considering when he was active. Still, it's a nice thought...

Two main problems for Firaxis to handle:

*Leaders' judgement is bound to rely on the AI engine implemented in CIV3. IT MUST HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH CIV2'S AI ENGINE. (these are leaders, right? or are they some sort of improved city advisors? ever used those fellows? baaah.)

*This is a turn-based game with close user-units interaction. Any interface that should make it too high a strategy (game) won't keep us happy. Combined power's all right but a free hand to units (or leaders, for that matter) isn't. THIS IS NOT SIM-CITY!
