I was so excited when I dl'd the editor, there were things I wanted to try. Problem is I think I can't do it with the editor the way it is.

1) I can't find a way to place cities on my map.

2) Is there a way to prevent the "globe" map? I mean the travel so far east that you come out on the west? I want a big terrain map that is really just a part of a whole world.

3) How does a Mac user edit the unit animations?

4) Looking at the Advancements part of the editor, using Bronze Working and spearmen as an example, where do you determine what units are now allowed?

That's enough for now, I hope that I'm just overlooking some simple things and I can get cracking.

Maybe I can answer one or two of those questions. I don't know (or think) there's a way to place cities on a map. Don't know about 2 or 3 either. You should be able to set what advance allows a unit by setting it in the requirements of the unit itself.

Nope. We're still at patch level 1.21, and they added placing things in the 1.29 file format. So no "real" scenarios yet. Editing a SAV file may be a way around it, but there are no tools for that yet.

Hmm... not sure about this one. It'd be nice though.

Not on a Mac. If you have VPC you can download "FLICster" and do your work with that, I HIGHLY advise reading the threads on it. If you just want to add art PC people have created, you just drop the folders into the right places.

I'm looking into creating one for mac, but the PC guy who made FLICster dropped off the face of the planet, and It'll take awhile.

I'm pretty sure you select the tech the unit comes from in the units section.

Hope this helps!

Ok, not the answers I was looking for (except the ones for question 4, those were fine), but I'll work with what I have at the moment. Perhaps someday we can place cities and edit unit animations?

You mentioned VPC. If I had virtual PC, could I run the PC version of the editor? Is there a place to download that (the PC editor), or did it come with the PC game?

Thanks,
Norm

Ok. Right now the mac version of Civ3 is currently running at the 1.21 patch level. Any files made by the 1.29 PC editor Will NOT work on the mac. So we're screwed. Join the club begging for a new update.

Sorry!

PsiNorm, for your 2nd question, there is one possible way to prevent units or things of that sort from crossing from one side of the map into the other. Createa continous mountain range down one side of the map, and separate this mountain range from the mainland or continents, which ever you perfer, with at least 1 tile of water from any other land mass. A section would look kind of like this:
M=mountain
W=water
T=other terrain
Note: remember that maps are like a coordinate plane that has been rotated 45?, which I can't do here in this post.

TWMWTTTT The water will prevent land units
TTWMWTTT from crossing from one side to
TTTWMWTT the other, and the mountains will
TTTTWMWT prevent naval units from crossing
over as well.

I'm pretty sure that the 1.29 version of the editor added the ability to make "flat" maps (i.e. no crossing over from west to east.) Or maybe it was PTW? I know I read about it being added in at some point.

I hope they add the Flat map. I'd hate to see a local map of like Civil War USA and have the Confederate Army sneak in from the west by sailing out to that mountain range just to the east, building a city and then sailing a boat to the West (Tennesee or something) for a sneak attack.

Of course, that's assuming that that would be possible with the WMW method posted above. If not then the humor is lost.

Nope, Civ 3 won't let you build mountaintop cities. Too bad, the Mountain Citadel of Shangrila will never exist due to the imperious hard-coding.

You have to wonder what went through the heads of the guys at Firaxis. "Let's see... We have possibly the largest following of modders in the entire game community, people loved the unparalleled abilities of Civ 2's editor, and we are practically worshipped for our 'Conflicts in Civilization' and 'Fantastic Worlds.' Therefore, the only logical option is to hard-code everything, make an editor that's simply an afterthought, and include no scenarios with the game, as well as only two maps that can't even define specific starting locations!" :mad:

May you could surround your map with water and delete all naval unit... that is if you only have one continent...

PsiNorm, I've seen this work on other mods and maps made by people. It might look stupid having a mountain range that extends from both poles in the middle of the ocean, but its the most practical thing you can do to prevent ships from crossing to another side. And as nmcul as well as others would immediately tell you, you can't build cities on mountains!(not trying to sound mean or anything, just some basic knowledge that is mentioned in the manual)

Stupid question, but once I have created the .BIC file, how do I use it, as in, I launch civ 3, then what options do I choose to use the map/rules i have created?

Once you have it saved, remember to have the .bic at the end( just making sure!), open Civ III, then click the Load Scenario choice, and to make it easier, I'd move your .bic into the scenarios folder so you'll find it easily. You won't have to 'choose' to use your custom rules, you just click the accept button and then it'll take you to the civ selection window. Choose your civ, and your set to play.

thanks it worked! it doesn't save it by default as a .bic, i had to go in there and rename it. So I just started a new game, and am testing with new rules, if I make it so that all civs build never on military units, then that means that they won't build anything, right? or has anyone tested it to see?
