Hi everybody, I have been reading around for a while on this site but just now registered. I have had Civ3 Vanilla for EVER (never really got into playing it though) but recently went out looking for the Conquest expansion pack. No stores seemed to have it but I did but the Complete version... Now a few questions regarting it...

1) I am very interested in modding Civ3, graphic or complete modpacks, but all of the mods I have seen are for Conquest or PTW, are there any mods for Complete? And if there are any any tips on how to impliment them would help.
2) Are there any patches needed for the the complete version?
3) What civilization is the best for me? Below is some of my preferences and tendancies
-I prefer military domination to other forms of winning
-I am a little stronger early in the game than later
-I play on Warlord or the lowest (maybe called Chieftan...) level
-I tend to have a couple big cities that produce very well and a lot of small cities that produce like crap
-I usually tend to lack great scientific proweress
-I prefer land combat to naval, thus I play on more land based maps
4) ..Forgot. More questions later maybe, if i remember it...

Thank you two for answering my questions. ony more question though, is there a place to go and like read up on strategy, especially military tacics?

Welcome to CFC!!

Complete is all 3 - Vanilla Civ, PTW, and Conquests. You'll probably want to play Conquests since it's the latest and includes everything in the other two plus more stuff. Check the "Creation & Customization" forums here at CFC for mods and tutorials on how to use them and create your own.

I believe Complete comes already patched with all the most recent.

You'll get a lot of answers. Play a variety of civs to see which ones suit your style. And be prepared for your choice of civs to change as you improve your game. Have Fun!

Oh, and tech wise, Iron Working first, then grab Monarchy. Try not to build legions until you switch to monarchy. Then build and send them to battle, that way you trigger your golden age at a time you won't loose a lot of money due to despotism's wastefullness.

Rome has bad traits for this style. I think Persia would be better for you. However, you should basically use Persia the same way the posters above me have said for Rome.

One thing I would say different is that you should definately build Legions/Immortals before Monarchy (Republic is usually better though), just not use them/go to war.

Alright, I will try both Rome and Persia then, thanks. But about what wilbill said, Conquest has PTW already attatched, did I get jipped then? I already had vanilla and I should have just bought Conquest. I thought I was getting both expansion packs combined, cheaper than they would be serperate... dang.

Sorry for a double post but one more question I have to ask:

Why is it that I have a nice starting city and can, say, produce a archer in 1 or 2 turns, but then a newer city, maybe smaller culture but a decent population of 3 thru 5 tries to build it and it takes like 20 turns!

Units cost shields to produce. Those are net shields after any corruption. So look at the blue shields each city is netting and you will see how fast say a 20 shields item requires.

The capitol will have no corruption (red shields) and hence not lose shields. The quality of worked tiles determines how much you get. Mine them to gain an extra shield as long as it is useful and will not take too long (read mountains). Culture has nothing to do with it, with the exception that expanded borders allow a choice of maybe better tiles to use.

Cities far from your capital will suffer from corruption, which is influenced by the distance from your capital and the number of cities between that city and your capital, as well as some other factors like government. Also, the terrain around the city and the degree to which it is improved usually play a large role.

EDIT: Cross-post.

You could buy conquests through amazon.com. I was in a similar situation to yours, and bought a copy from them a couple weeks ago.

I would also second the person who said to check out the "War Academy". Also, the "succession games" forum can be really useful as you can see how people won difficult games step-by-step.

Thanks for the tips. Now one more quick question (lol). I am looking to win a bet with a friend. He said that I can not win a game by not using any offensive military at all. Now I looked at the other ways to win and it looks like culture is the way to go... Any suggestions? Also any suggestions on a civ to use to build up quickly?

People have not only won a game with out going to war, people have won a Deity/Sid game without building units.

Cultural, Diplo, Spaceship, all of these three victory conditions can be won without going to war.

Welcome! I'm also pretty new - and, since I can't decide on a culture, with so many, I've just been hitting the Random button. Right now, I'm the Celts. They might be a fun choice for you, come to think of it. But heck, hit Random, and see what you come out as.
Enjoy.

How you DARE to discount Rome???
Rome is the war civ. The only war civ. Persia is irrelevant. Celts are irrelevant. Rome is everything. Knee.

:D

Ok, just kidding. IMHO, Persia is a good alternative, their UU is awesome. And i'm substantially d'accord with what you say, except for the preference of Republic.
