A few quick questions

Please answer if you can:

1. Is there any use for the Stealth fighter?

2. Does anyone ever use Helecopters/paratroopers? (yes, maybe for quick resource denial, but by the time you get advanced flight, rails are everywhere and you'll be destroyed by tanks as soon as you land...)

3. In the 1.29 patch, have you EVER been able to buy/sell a city to the CPU?

4. Is there any method to the silliness behind ROP abuse by the CPU? Sometimes when you say go they do, others they do not. I am, of course, not speaking of when they declare war right away, but solely about when you in 5 consecutive turns ask them to leave, they agree, and never do so...

5. It appears as though some of the UU in PTW are over powered, ie. the celt's 4/2/2 instead of swordsmen, the spanish 7/3/3 instead of calvary that moves like an explorer!, etc. Am i missing something or do these units seem far overpowered when compared to say, the F-15.

Thanks in advance for any help on these questions...

3) that was disabled because it is too easy exploited by the player.

4) I'm assuming you don't have ROP with them and they keep coming into your land? There is a thread in the general discussion forum just today about that, I suggest you read it. The title of that thread is "AI doesn't cheat!"

5) I don't think those stats are set in stone yet. So I wouldn't fret too much.

Thanks, but they should have retuned the values rather than remove the option.

Thanks.

Thanks again.

If someone could post thoughts on the first 2 please do so.

1.The stealth fighter is better than the standard fighter for air defense but comes very late so is often too late!

2.Persoanlly no - I never build them but maybe others do.

I appreciate your help, but the standard fighter (which i find almost never intercepts) upgrades to the jet fighter. I do not believe that the stealth fighter has air defense attributes. If someone else has contrary information please post.

Paratroopers and helicopters are vrey close to being the worst units in the game (behind explorers and [diesel] subs) because why would you want an 6/8/1 attackin and only one guy in each heli. Seems kind of pointless when the AI gots infantry or even mech. But yeah, i could understand the need to pillage though they would be killed once they land.

I believe the stealth fighter is simply a cheaper, weaker version of the stealth bomber (kind of the way a destroyer is a cheaper, weaker version of the battleship even though they don't come with the very same tech).

I find paratroopers useful in perhaps 1% of my games. Helicopters about 0.5%.

1) Do you actually research Stealth? I'm usually at Alpha Centauri at that point ...

2) I might've used 'em if Advanced Flight was a mandatory tech. As it's now, I simply never research it.

3) and 4) See earlier responces.

5) I think you are conflating the stats of the Sipahi (Turkish Cav) with the Spanish Conquistadores. As regards the Gallic Swordsmen, two-move Swordsmen sure sounds powerful. Let's hope they're hellishly expensive.

EDIT: A look at the screenshots at www.civ3.com shows the Gallic Swordsman as having and ADM of 3/2/2; powerful enough at that point in time, but not quite as bad as the 4/2/2 you'd heard. The Conquistador is 5/3/3; still runs over Pikemen with relative ease, but'll be in even deeper trouble against fortified Riflemen than reg'lar Cav (let's not mention Infantry). It'll probably be everybody's fave pillager.

1. If your opponents are on another continent with massive number of MI, Stealth Bombers would be very effective. Since you can't move artilleries to another continent quickly and safety so flying a bunch of Stealths to a newly captured city and start bombing the surrounding would be best.

2. Yes, but they are junk.

3. No.

4. I don't do ROP rape. If a Civ has more than 1 military unit in your territory and you ask them to leave they would have no choice but to either either leave or declare. I don't think the workers fall on the same category.

5. I don't know.

Yes, that is very true, but the question was in regards to stealth fighters, not the bombers... the bombers are great :). As for capturing a city late game, i generally find that to be a poor tactic. I usually drop lots of defenders with a setler, build a city on a mountain, and raze surrounding cities, create a barrier of space so i can take them apart as they slowly advance at me.

To the fellow who thinks i have my numbers on the units wrong, that may be so, i just took them from PTW screenshots.

Wildfire: As for explorers being useless, there is a great thread on using them as pillagers, a tactic that sirian used to great effect during his domination win without attacking a city.

To the last conformist: I tend to turn off the space race, since i win every time by that method easily, and prefer to find alternate endings. I also never research either advanced flight OR amphibious (sp) warfare... i just get em in trades for techs or buy them for some cash. If i'm still alive at that point in the game, i'm winning handily.

Thanks for the replies, i suppose most people have come to the same conclusions about these units... that they aren't much good!

Paratroopers and helicopters are pretty good for pillaging resources. In my last game, I played at monarch level, and used a helicopter carrying an infantry unit to pillage my enemy's oil. For some reason, he never rebuilt that road so he wasn't able to make any tanks or modern armor after that any more. So I found that quite effective. Helicopters only make sense if you don't have an airport nearby, obviously.

I think that stealth fighters do have air superiority capabilities but I agree that they aren't really useful. Like someone said, a downgraded version of stealth bombers.

Civilopedia said stealth fighter got a radar and can see 2 tile wide so i guess they do better recon mission, but me i always use a combo of jet fighter and stealth bomber because jet fighter perform air supperiority.
