A is for Aztec

I think we have all been there and done that one.

Well my Korean "close spacing" game is complete. I have this really bad habit of hitting the dom limit. I just don't pay attention closely enough. although this was getting a bit tedious so the war and the dom win was a release from boredom.

An interesting part of this game was a war started by France against me. In true Ai fashion, Liz (who was polite and sharing up to this point) dropped off one MDI on an island continent I owned and declared. Just to keep everything interesting and since the DOW was pretty obvious, I got Liz into an MPP before the DOw. She had the most to gain from getting into the war because France had encroached. Just to keep all exciting, I invited the Byzantines and the Vikings into the war as well. given the map style, it just made sense. About half way through, England and the Byz's signed for peace. Surprise, surprise, surprise! about 3 turns after that Theodora declared on Liz and I was still in MPP with her. Guess who was into the war big time now. At one point we all had ROP's to make it easier to get to France. That "Right ended".. until Theodora, being more stubborn than intelligent no longer had any land over which to offer dominion.

I finally got some use out of my above average aggression level.

An interesting aside about the boredom. After I had won, I went on playing for a good bit to see which Civ would try a really dumb war against me. Ragnor lost the toss.

As to the wide spacing version of the same game... I think I am going to start one up but play it as an aside while I go on through the map. To be honest, I am not sure I can even play that way. it is just so alien to my way of playing. but I will start it up while I can still choose "Play last world"but then on to the Mayans. They were a pretty good Civ if I remember my attempts to play them before.

Well the Mayan game is completed and I played it at Regent. Since they grow like rabbits, I figured it was safe to try a higher level. My score was in the 3,000 range for this one.

Just checked... it was 3,543.

I think I should finish the Korean Wide-spacing game before I go on to the Mongols.

Just off hand. Are the Mongols considered a strong contender? I am debating whether to play them at Regent. I guess I should be able to try it and just cash it in and go lower if I have to.

They're considered a weak civ, but on low levels Expansionist can really rock the boat, as you're more likely to beat the AI to the goody huts (on high levels the AI gets a lot of bonus units straight from the off, spreading them out in all directions, meaning the goody huts are gone really soon).
Draw a free settler at turn 5 and you'll say Expansionist is the strongest trait of them all, draw just maps and a bit of gold and you'll say it's useless. So it all depends.
Bartleby referred to the Keshik ignoring the movement penalty of difficult terrain. I always forgot to use this well when I played them, so I don't know how strong this feature is.
I would probably let my strategy revolve around the Keshik. So look for the Horse resource straight away, go Chivalry, and go conquering. Keshiks only cost 60 shields; trigger a golden age and you'll build them in 3 to 4 turns in your best towns. Remember how the Elephants started rocking the boat in 'India stomps the World'? Well, the Keshik can do the same thing. Go for it!

thanks guys. I consider this and do some planning while I finish up my wide spacing game. if that game doesn't send me for a long vacation somewhere :crazyeye:

oops, I forgot to post my Mongol game. Well that one is over and it went rather well.

I have completed my game with the Ottoman empire as well. We had a couple of wars in that one. The Indians were doing the "we're just out for a Sunday stroll on your lands" and I decided not to give them the chance to sneak attack. I killed them on my land and then organized a dog-pile so they didn't do that ever again. later in the game, the Celts tried an ROP abuse by sending 1 reg archer to my capitol and declared war... now that was funny. or maybe the word is pathetic.

I gifted Delhi to someone but I did that 3 times in the game. One of the more interesting aspects of this game.

I should have been taking out the Inca a lot earlier but I wasn't sure if I could get to spaceship or not. when I got tanks, I decided it was time to get rid of them.

Well on to the Persians. It has been ages since I played them and they used to be my exclusive Civ. only 7 more to go after my Persian play. :hmm: will have to decide if I want to play them all again at Regent...

I keep seeing this thread title and it screams for rhyming.

"A" is for Aztec
Montezuma's a goner
But he'll sacrifice fifty
warriors in your honor

Any takers?

Well I completed my Persian game in very good time. i played this at Regent and not only got a decent score at Regent but I even got the top bulb on the "ring the bell" option.

I think y'all should just follow suit and refer to me as Darski the Magnificent after this one. :rotfl:

I am getting better at starting wars too. Of course Ramses made it easy for me to wipe him out with his completely uncouth remarks on closing a trade deal that had been very good for him. he was getting 54 gpt and still had workers collapsing around me everywhere.

Now it's on to Portugal and I am not looking forward to that one. They do not seem to be very well received around here.

@sweetchuck... poetry is sooooooooo not my thing but have at it if it makes you smile :)

Well, they're no good for early wars, but not all is bad: they start with Alphabet, with scouts and their boats are fast. It shouldn't be difficult to take a tech lead with them. The Portuguese have no raw power in them, but you can manipulate the game quite well with them. Try to play clever and cunning with Portugal.
Best is perhaps a continents 70% water map.

The only trouble with continents is that you don't get much land for your scouts to explore for goody huts.

I do like scouts and I love that seafaring trait. This could be fun on the right map and depending on my rivals.

Woo-hoo! Congratulations!

I just came across this thead as I'm not around much. Great idea, darski! This makes me want to try a similar approach as well. :)

I would recommend this approach to anyone who is new to Civ or to those who are finding that you are feeling the same old, same old in your playing.

Portugal? You may be tempted to go back to warlord level because of their poor reputation.

Do the opposite! Try them at monarch! :) Portugal is only good at trading and you may need reasonably strong trading partners to make the game fun.

How about using a big map?

And congratulations for continuing those games. Zulus are not so far anymore :)

Well I think I will try them at Regent.I have never been able to play monarch. I did try it once in my Vanilla days and it did not go well at all.

Yeah, the Zulu are seeming very close indeed these days. It has been a good investment of my Civ time. Thanks

Not only am I not playing these twits at Regent but I am going to a tiny map just to get this game over and done with. Boy this is the worst Civ I have ever played and I have played all of them at some time or another. These guys are making me look forward to playing Rome.

I think I will do continents after all. I just want some peace and quiet and some land to grow on. who knows, it might even be a 5CC for me after all. :vomit:

How is this for a win time?:lol::lol:

I ended up doing Warlord, pangaea on tiny and my saving grace was having ivory in Lisbon's city area - first expansion and it was in. I did a beeline to Math after getting my slingshot which did nothing for me.:p I couldn't support Rep with only 4 cities and then it was one thing or another that got in the way. i couldn't afford a war in anarchy either for troops or unrest so I just kept going and kept fighting when I had the chance.

Didn't get to take out Japan at all and at one point William was playing 1CC.

The point is that I played them in the list and now I never have to play them again. It was an uphill slog all the way for this one. No cheap... anything and exploring a tiny pangaea with one other small island took about 100 years :joke:

On to Rome. After Portugal, they will be a rare treat indeed.
