A background to what happened:
I started out as the Ottomans on this little bay, full of hope and joy for the future of my civilization. Unlike my previous game I was hoping to have a peaceful game and go for a Science or Culture victory. Whilst I didn't think using the Ottoman's for culture was a good idea, I was keeping my options open. Shortly after the start I found a small land bridge to the west of my capital which led to a large island with some silk and 2 city states on it. To the east I found Siam and some nice resources as well as Mt. Fuji. I quickly got myself in a position to get that free settler policy (and built my own) for a quick, 'screw you Siam' double city placement, one just up to the east of his capital and one just to the west. He took this as you'd expect and soon we were getting on like 12 year old brothers. At this point in time I met Polynesia, who were just casually marching a warrior about in the deep blue sea.
Soon I met my new best friend, the Songhai and soon we formed a partnership that I thought would rule the world. I found some cities, he founded some cities, he demanded me to give him my second set of gems, barbarians destroyed one leaving me -5 happiness and him laughing it up with the other set, you know, the usual. I was now being assaulted from all sides by barbarians, but this was fine until Siam finally decided to have a 'Screw the Ottoman Empire' moment and declared war with one of the least subtle attacks I've ever seen. They literally just marched 5+ troops up to one of my boarders and declared war. I got the Songhai into the war, the rest mist came down and the next thing I knew I had 10 cities.
The Songhai apparently wanted some of that empire and soon my closest ally declared war on me. I'm still slightly confused what he was thinking. Firstly, he was already at war with my soon to be "best friends" the Danes to the south, a massive and rich empire that had built essentially all the wonders up to this point. Secondly, he only had 3 cities and as such would never be able to keep up with my production rate. In any case soon I shared a boarder with Denmark.
At this point I was hoping for a break, you know, getting my empire back in shape, actually building buildings and the like. However, the very turn that my old friend lost himself the Danes declared war on me, for being a warmonger of course. The Danes by this point had conquered a mere 3 city states, so yeah, I can see my great evil.
The war started out surprisingly easy with me taking some 4 cities in 10-15 turns. I then got to Copenhagen. It was a massive city, with about every wonder you could imagine (for the era) that sat in a bottle neck created by mountains to one side (the side I was on). After a 15-20 turn war of attrition I finally got myself into a position to finally take Copenhagen. This change my happiness from -9 to +11... Very odd. From here he had literally 2 units, and I'm fairly sure he built them in the time it took me to reach them. This left my empire in a position of having 28 cities. No cultural victory for me...
I now spent my time building my empire, earning tons of cash and buying the favour of the cities states. During this time I met France and the Inca. They were on a continent with Polynesia. It was slightly smaller than my own and once also was home to the now non existent Spanish. I formed a long running alliance with France and the Inca until France became annoyed at them and wiped them off the face of the planet. They and Polynesia had sparing matches here and there but overall from the late medieval period to the modern day (about 2010) nothing of note really happened. My empire was producing an excessive amount of culture for a 28 city empire though.
After a while France, who had been happily destroying City States decided I was a warmonger and Polynesia joined him on this one (despite me doing nothing for over 100 turns by this point). With about 30 turns left they conquered another 2 city states and I decided enough was enough. Now having completed the tech tree (though I decided to just finish it with time due to Napoleon's actions) I bought 5 Giant Death Robots, the first I've ever built as well as loading up 2 missile ships with 6 nuclear missiles. I launched a massive nuclear and GDR assault on France as a rescue mission for my fallen city state friends. I quickly took Paris and razed another 3 before saving Ragusa. I then used Paris as a new base and built another 5 GDRs and even more Nukes, basically destroying Napoleon's once great empire. It turned into an orange glowing wasteland. I Razed another 4 cities and got to Venice, a city state who had El Dorado and liberated them. Happy in my victory against France I decided to try and save one more city state (Warsaw) before heading home.
Upon Razing one more City Venice went from +340ish influence to -120 and permanent war because "I was picking on the little guy too much". The game would end a mere 3 turns later, but I am actually stunned by this. I saved them, and I saved other city states throughout the game, I was in fact stopping the villain of the world from taking city states. Sure, the ones I got off France were left as orange glowing wastelands, but they were free of France's role. The game would end with France having a puppet city as a capital, but having Venice turn on me was a betrayal beyond words.
Really, I know why they turned on me. City states on on you for being on the extreme side of war monger, but really... I saved them and other city states, I was stopping the war monger... Surely this is a problem when a city state that you saved from an evil warmongering french... something suddenly turns on you for attacking that evil warmongering french... something.
Surprisingly my Empire was a mere 2 policies from a Cultural Victory with 28 cities at!
