Ok, I know so many civs have been wanted and discussed and many people don't want another european civ anyway. When it comes to relevance, sure Switzerland is a small country and it has never had much interest in shaping/changing the world. But I'd like to point out why Switzerland could be a different case from the others and, as far as I know, there was no thread for this so far.

Switzerland could be a very unique civ that plays different from all the others that we had so far and probably will have.
Switzerland is famous for its armed neutrality which is a national concept since 500 years. It has been in wars since then (and some civil wars too) but it never attack a neighboring country/started a war. Neighboring cities joined the nation of will that Switzerland is though. I like the thought that a swiss civ is not able to start a war or to capture enemy cities. It would not work if conquest is the only available victory condition, of course.

So my idea of an UA:
"Armed Neutrality" Not being able to declare war or capture cities. Attacking Switzerland leads to a malus in relationship with other civs.

An idea to help the swiss civ in the late game against large empires:
Unique tile improvement "disguised landmine". Available in the late game. It looks like a normal improvement (farm, sawmill...) to other civs, gives no extra yields but kills the first enemy unit walking on it (and also deletes the improvement). This is based on the swiss tactic during WWII.

Unique building:
"Swiss Bank" You earn a very very small % of the gold income of all other civs you've met. Might also be a special national wonder (that are not in Civ VI [yet] :( ).

So you end up like a turtle with a lot of money. What to do with it?
Since Switzerland would be restrained from winning through conquest, I'd like it to have another Unique building:
"Foundaton". You can create foundations (one per city) in your districts which enables you to invest your money and get science/culture/faith over time. This reflects the cultural/scientific powerhouse that Switzerland is per capita.

The leader problem:
Switzerland did not have too many great leaders in its history, and "leader" itself is the wrong term anyway. I would prefer that Switzerland would be reigned by the people, since it is, to my knowledge, the only direct democracy there is/has been that seems to work. So you meet "the People of Switzerland" instead of "Dufour of Switzerland". Of course, in reality you would meet a member of the 7-people-head-of-state-council called "Bundesrat". If direct democracy could disable you doing stuff in the game or require extra amenities is another thought, but it would probably be too complicated. :wallbash:

What do you think?
PS: this is not a commercial for Switzerland and I am also not swiss

I'm okay with Switzerland as a Civ, but these bonuses all sound horrible to me

Not being able to declare war or capture cities means that you've basically lost the game if you start squished between other Civs, you also can't do anything about the people forward settling you.

The disguised landmine sounds like the most annoying thing to play against ever had in any Civilization game. Slowly sneaking forward, having the weakest units at the front and basically being forced to sacrifice them if you want to wage war against them? Ugh.

The Swiss Bank sounds impossible to balance between small and huge maps.

well, except for your last point (agreed!) that's exactly what I had in mind

I like the idea of Switzerland as a civ.

But we need to change this UA of Switzerland "Not being able to declare war or capture cities. Attacking Switzerland leads to a malus in relationship with other civs" I think it would not be a good idea.

I believe that Switzerland should follow a way of peace and diplomacy, as happiness bonus for moments of peace. Thus, the player would find difficult decision to declare war against another civ, it would lose its happiness bonus. Another bonus could be extra happiness for each city-state friend/ally.

Switzerland would be a peaceful civ focused on achieving a diplomatic victory.

That would be a way, but I was looking for something more unique and the "no attacks" thingy really changes the way you (have to) play. I can see why many players won't like it.
