A question about the unit limit...

How long has Civ V had a production penalty for building more units than your cities can support? I have a total of 11 units in my current game and I'm suddenly getting a -20% production penalty? WTH isn't the maintenance cost high enough without taking pot shots at my city production?!

But anyway, is this relatively new, or has it been in the game since day 1 and I've just been inexplicably missing it for some reason?

I must have missed it then. Is there anyway to find out what your unit limit is without going over it?

Not sure if it's the same thing, but there's a 'unit supply' figure shown in the military advice screen (from the same dropdown that allows you to look at victory progress, demographics etc.).

Click on the Additional Information button in the upper right of the UI and select Military Overview. On the left side is a breakdown of your Unit Supply information.

There's a unit production penalty???

I guess I've never built too many.

Yeah. Apparently the game tacks on a -10% production penalty for each unit you have over the max unit limit. From what I've seen, increasing population or number of cities raises your supply limit.

@PhilBowls and Ramos Yeah, I remember seeing that now, I guess I just never thought there was a penalty involved. Thank you, I'll be keeping an eye on that from now on.:wow:

Hah, another thing I never had a clue about.

Well, I'll keep an eye on it too.

From the military advisor, it appears the formula is:

A constant (based on difficultly level) + number of cities + total population = total unit support.

Units consuming support not only include military units but also include civilians.

I would guess that the AI gets the Chieftain level difficulty bonus.

I hit the limit in a game where i was spamming out warriors like mad initially.

Hadn't known about it until then, but it's really never an issue unless you build insane numbers of units right off the bat without growing much.

It's actually (Difficulty Level) + Number of Cities*2 + Total Population/2= Total Unit Support.
