It does not effect demonic units. Why?
I can see why the undead would not be effected, as their bodies are powered by necromancy. But a demon seems to have its own physiology, twisted and hellish but still under its own power. I don't see any reason why body mana couldn't enhance its speed.
I realize that the spell requires a "living" target, but I think it ought to be extended to include demons and angels (I'm guessing it doesn't effect them either). It doesn't seem like it would be causing any balance issues.
The spell system as a whole should probably get looked at for other oddities such as this. The magic system can be hard enough for a new player to learn without extras like this popping up.

The way I see it:

Body magic is a study of human physiology. The spells it provides are simply known techniques for how to apply magical forces in a way that augments the body.

Since demons aren't really likely to give themselves up to be studied, and their physiology is different from humans, I think it's fairly logical that haste and regen don't work on them.

Body magic is the magic of the living body. It doesnt effect catapults, golems, demons, fire elementals, etc. Anything that isnt alive.

Thats the flavor reason. From a function side it limits the power of haste, which doesn't need to be made any stronger.

Lastly you make an excellent point that it is confusing to players when spells work in some situations and not others. I would probably switch it just for this reason if it would make sense to have it truly effect everything (catapults, boats, etc). But since we cant realistically open haste up to that level we will have to have the break between units it works on and those it doesnt. And since we have to have the break anyway, the break between living and non-living is as good as any other (and we try to stay consistent ont hat break on multiple mechanics).

Besides, If haste affected them, next thing you know the Amurites will be making unlimited skeleton armies (Teach spells to your skellie and 5 warriors in your stack. so on and so forth.)

Just a thought. Maybe it should work on catapults.

By strengthening the legs of the living crew that pushes it, they'd be able to move it around faster.

Yeah, maybe catapults need crews. You could take a look at the[ Korean Unique Unit] from base Civ (Warlords+).
Still, do they cause war weariness? I suppose one they are 'killed' only the equipment is lost at range (crews abandon their engines if the the enemy melee gets too close)

If they can get away. Siege operators on foot are rather slow compared to hasted horselord shadowriders.

And what about removing "not considered alive" from angels? This would be a great boost for the Mecurians and the law sphere, wich are both considered "not very strong".

If angels were considered alive then when killed they would respawn in Basiums Capital then die again and respawn....and so in infinity.

Oh, I havn't thought of this. Thank you.

WHy not? an army of level angels that are more immortal than real immortals? "bring in the valorous hasted mobility II blitz horselord shadowriders, we have an army to train!" :strength:
