A Spy Has Been Stumbled Upon!

Or is it possible that your spy did complete its mission successfully, then for the next step in the process the game checks to see if your spy is discovered, and in this instance your spy was caught?

What happened to your spy next turn? Was he returned home, still there, or did he disapear from the game?

It is possible for a spy to complete the mission successfully and still be caught.

OK, someone please explain THIS one to me:

I just performed a mission in a neutral Civ (not at war, not an ally) and the RED message "spy stumbled upon" comes on AT THE SAME TIME right underneath, it states in GREEN "mission completed successfully". Huh?

How can it be successful if he is caught?

This whole thing makes absolute no sense to me.

Why doesn't this make sense?

All this means is that whilst the spy managed to complete his mission, the spy was caught whilst escaping.

Say for example, you ask your spy to destroy a theatre. My understanding is that the spy managed to destroy the theatre, but, whilst trying to escape from the city, he was caught. He still managed to complete his mission so, in that sense, and in the sense of your civ, it was a success. For him it wasn't as his head is now most likely seperate from the rest of his body, but who cares about one simple little spy?

This whole "improvement" of spies is seriously lacking. I'm a big fan of BtS, but spies are just boring, and time consuming, without adding any serious change to the game at all. Besides, the little portrait of the spy is hideous, and you have to look at it over and over again..!

Remove them spies, I say!

:)

Actually you can take a reputation hit NOT just from failing missions.

I had a spy in Darius' land just walking around mapping. He got caught. Whenever a spy gets caught be it from an active mission or not, there is a chance that they will discover what civilization the spy came from. If this happens, you get a diplomacy hit.

My spy that was caught running around Darius' land, after that I checked and had a (-1 or -2 I forget) hit saying something about sending spys into his land.

The key is if they discover the host country identity or not. I am unsure what the % chance of that happening is.

Judging from my current game where japan is regularly sending spies into my territory I would say that he probability of doscoverinmg the nationality is around 20-25 %

But maybe it is also influenced by the ratio of espionage points you and the other nations have versus each other.

I believe it means your spy has been detected by an enemy spy, and now your spy cannot perform missions until he moves away from the enemy spy.

All this means is that whilst the spy managed to complete his mission, the spy was caught whilst escaping.

That would make absolute sense if my spy was caught or detained, but he has performed his mission and is moving about freely.

I understand people want to try and make some sense into all of this, but frankly, the whole spy thing has been executed poorly.

agoodfella, if your spy performed a mission, it would not still be wandering around. The first message you saw in your original post is that you have found another civs spy in your territory. You do not know the nationality. Also, it was not in a city, else the city would have been mentioned.

The second one you mention is that your spy completed a mission, then was caught, as others had said. If it was not caught, it would have been returned to your capital. If you do a mission, your spy is either caught or returned, it does not continue to roam around.

fiszsh is completely right :D

It's working as intended agoodfella (these messages you are getting are correct).... but I do agree with you about it being poorly implemented... espionage has gone from nothing to being one of the most integral parts of the game.

Spies can cripple civs without war, especially on marathon and epic speeds. Poison supplies, destroy culture buildings, etc can all really mess up the AI.

AI not so good at using espionage, though.
