A thought crossed my mind for GOTM/SGOTM maps. Often in the spoiler threads, we end up referring to features in a vague kind of way by comment like, eg. 'the mountains north of the start' or 'Vicky's continent' or 'that river by the silver' (Those are all hypothetical examples btw; I've not taken them from any actual GOTM). I think it'd be kinda cool if we had set names for important features - like continents, islands, oceans, or large rivers or mountain ranges. So we can use the names and everyone know exactly what a spoiler post is referring to.

So, Ainwood/Gyathaar - how about it? Using the globalview label feature to add names to places in the starting saves? I know it's adding a bit of work and you already have lots of work, but it would be kinda fun. Depending how you do it you could either have completely random names, or use the names to add subtle nuances to the game by giving us subtle clues about the land (eg. the 'Pyranees' happen to be near Napoleon's start position, or 'the Red Sea' has some copper nearby)

[reminisce] :old: There was once a Civ3 GOTM that had some added location names - GOTM 20, Spain, Deity. That was a fun game.
Names like Andalucia were laboriously created as resource graphics and added to the map by Cracker.[/reminisce]

I've no idea how much extra work would be required, but it could be used as a technique to provide clues and/or red herrings :mischief:

In Civ4, the extra work is trivial. I checked in worldbuilder and the menu option is there to add a label to any tile, just like that. The bulk of the work would be in deciding what labels to add where. (But I do realize that when you already have too much work to do, even something that by itself is 'trivial' can represent a big burden). (I also verified that when tiles are unexplored, you can't see the labels for them either - that's kinda important ;) ).

Aside: The thing I can't figure out is how to change colour. You obviously can have different colours as the labels I created in worldbuilder are a different colour from ones created in globeview in my current SGOTM, but I can't see any toolbar option anywhere to select the colour in either case).

I believe the color depends on what civilization is 'selected' as the current player when making the labels. That's why our labels in the SGOTM are orange-Russia is orange :)
