Bad Terrain

Could someone tell me why you would want to make a mod that makes the game worse? Its always a risk when modding, in fact i would venture that 95% of all mods and scenarios created and posted on this site are overdone and not tasteful. This of course is my opinion, but i think many might agree...the terrain graphics that firaxis made are excellent and I have yet to see better. I've seen a lot of gawdy colors, though. Fuzzy trees and happy mountains...

Bad Units

RAR at least did not use terrain graphics, but a good mod is not dumping every unit graphic ever made into some Civ stew. The camels make weird noises and look like their legs are gonna break off. If they took a poop it would cover my Capital city. I would not say this(usually someone spends hours making these) but I know this one is a convert from AOE.

Not complete

I don't believe you should say a scenario is done unless it is. The Civilopedia is what makes Civ3 awesome. Those splashes and cool descriptions..tid bits of history...this, in my mind, must be complete if one is to release a mod or scenario. I act on what i say, i spent several hours yesterday adding more graphics to the pedia and pics to the units32 file because i added a few new units. I could have just added the 3 or 4 units more and though "oh...i completed the rest of it, just these new ones don't matter, I'll update it in a patch" But no, I knew if it was to be done, do it now. Now I'm not picking on the RAR guys, they work real hard. But they work too hard. If your unit is not ready for a splash or unit32 or pedia graphics, don't put it in.

Conclusion

Now obviously many love the overkill, the more the better. But for the less is more people i encourage my fellow scenario creators to please them also. I know when i get a scenario I like it to be as good or better than a Firaxis effort, too idealistic? Perhaps, but its possible.

Now the point of this: If your scenario is less is more, post it here, even if its not done yet. The finished ones I'll post in the completed threads (if i like them). This is part for me (to get some new scenarios that are good ;) ) and part for others that think like me.

Thank you all for your time and I'm sure some bashings will now commense as well...

I'm sure bashing will begin shortly...

People make mods because they want to, and they make it the way THEY like it.

I've modded too, and most people would probably hate the things I made, but I like it.
And when and if I would post it, it would only be to share it, not to make sure that other people will like it.

Well then this thread is not for you, but there are some that are looking for mods that are slite tweaks, not an overhaul into outer space like the star wars mods.

Why should a mod creator make that kind of mod if he doesn't like playing it himself?

Sounds like adressing the people who make 'bad' mods to me... :p

Anyway, have fun modding :)

I don't think any bashing need be started here.

As Zeekater said:

"People make mods because they want to, and they make it the way THEY like it."

And this is all kevincompton is really doing (I think): Telling us what a mod is the way he'd like it.

I also agree with Zeekater in that most of us make mods for how we like it, and post them primarily to share and show our hard work (because, whether one likes the mod or not, a lot of hard work has been put into them)

So I personally hope that what kevincompton has said is not taken too offensively by anyone. I myself would not find it an easy task to say what he has said and present what he has presented without causing offense to anyone, and I trust, kevincompton, that your intent was not to cause offense.

So, looking past all that, I think it would make more sense just to discuss the ideas kevincompton presented. Because there are some quality ideas there and they deserve discussion.

- just my two cents worth ;)

What? I never said they should. If you, meaning you, do not like the mods I'm talking about then go to another thread and talk about it. This thread is for people who do.

Congratulations on the ownership of the thread. Now, go to another site to talk about it. This one is for people that mod for fun.

That is my point, redalert. Very well said.

Perhaps I did not make clear enough, this is just a thread for those who think like me to talk about what mods out there fit our tastes. Lets face it, 200 civs a million units...its just not the style of everyone, though a clear majority seem to like vast changes and such.

Hey embryodead, I didn't ask you to read this or post here. Your assuming no one on this site agress with my views. Its fun for me to make mods that are good and not half done or overkill.

Hey kevincompton, I didn't ask you to read this or post here either. It is a public forum *wink, wink*. If it's fun for you to make good mods, why don't you do it instead of *****ing in general direction?

I think the main problem is that to some people the first post comes over a bit like:
"Hi, all your mods suck and I'm going to tell you how to do it right."

This of course isn't so :)

On-topic:
I think that people make lots of small mods, changing little things, but they don't post it, because they think it isn't worth it :)

I really don't see what your so bent about...is it because your mod is a stylistic tragedy? Yup thats why....

I am making a Scenario, read the sig. I've been working on it for about 3 months. Its almost done and u wouldn't like it cause theres no elvin dragon spirit dog fighters and crystals and crap.

No, you're not offensive at all. You obviously want to discuss things and be nice, you just don't know how to start it...

You think 3 months is a long time?
BTW I won't even reply to the insult.
If I don't like a mod I don't say it. Neither do I play it.

Well, in this case, somebody did spend hours making these... the camel units in RaR were made by me.

That said... I agree with you... my earliest units suck pretty bad.

You told him!

Then you untold him....

In some ways I agree with what this post is saying, in some ways I don't. I agree, that in an ideal world, some of the less good units wouldn't be used, but really it is up to the modder, who is modding for themselves, so they're the boss...

Well, I can't help but admit when someone is right... I happen to agree with him.

Besides, nothing's wrong with a health mix of humiliation and relief... ;)
