At this point do you think the US is going to present any sort of challenge to you? How big is their military compared to yours?

Regarding the US challenge, you will note that the United States has over 5 times the armor and 3 times the infantry of the USSR. Nevertheless, the General Secretary has every confidence that Mother Russia will prevail in due time.

How are the IBT times running for you? The AI with lots of units, but no brains and no armies equals no sweat, when the human has armies and replacements and skill.

I would say at the moment 10-12 minutes even with automation on. The British battleships take a while if they are all passing by the coast. And if the RAF is busy it can take a while for he bombers to pass, but I'm please overall. I think having no rail makes a positive difference there.

And there are no armies with the scenario, the armies as I refer to them are only groupings of units so a bit more of a challenge.

I got confused then. I thought you were playing one that has armies. The ones I have played have either none allowed or a limit of two (AoI 3.0). Those are a bit more of an issue, but not bad as you just come in force, they come in piecemeal.

Not bad times at all. I have seen that much on some of our SG's on my last machine. I have not managed to get to those size maps on my new one to see if it is faster or the same. I have been told in the past that more L2 cache will have a big impact on C3C.

I was dubious, but no way to test till now. I played CCM on a 260x240, but it never had many units. I compared some big battles on M003, but they are all compute bound and had little difference. Some, but not much.

The only Soviet bomber that can be placed on a carrier is a sturmovik. Their range of 4 can make for some close quarters combat which I try and avoid. The British send convoys past Denmark and typically attempt to land near Stettin. I try and keep 30-35 bombers in Sweden which is about what is needed to sink 3 Lion battleships with about 3-4 losses due to AA fire each round. I have another 12-15 land based sturmoviks to attack any units that do succeed in landing. That makes it possible to add to the elite unit inventory. Elite KV-1s are the best defense against the British Comet tank, so I try and keep a modest stack of vet units to train up as landings do take place.

Redman, in answer to your question, no, the Russians cannot build these types of super-battleships. The standard Battleship C2 is outclassed by these vessels, so the Soviet navy has to rely on airpower to even the odds.

Week 1 1943

In a meeting of the Soviet Defense Council, a review of current deficiencies within the Soviet forces is discussed. In the Red Army, it is determined that both heavy tanks and heavy artillery are needed in increased quantities. As a result, prioritization of KV-1s and heavy artillery is ordered. Forces fighting in Japan will receive as many of these type forces as can be gathered.

In the Red Army Air Forces, there has been a shakeup at the top. General M.I. Vostrin has been sacked and replaced by General Mikhail Kolochenko, former commander of 1st Air Army. Kolochenko had come to the attention of Stalin when a supposedly internal memo had been circulated, with the Air Army commander accusing Vostrin of badly mis-managing the air war against Britain. Among the accusations was that despite an increase of fighter regiments, intercept missions were all too rare. He also claimed Vostrin had failed to push for Soviet aircraft to receive a pre-eminent place in Soviet production schedules. Kolochenko insisted that if the Allies were to be dealt with, the number of operational aircraft would need to increase to unheard-of levels.

Fighters doubled from 100 to 200
Transport aircraft from 8 to 50
Sturmovik fighters from 65 to 300
Pe-2 and Pe-8 bombers from 110 to 300

The generals were stunned to discover that not only had Kolochenko replaced Vostrin, but that Stalin promised the new commander of the Red Army Air Force that he would get the planes he wanted.

(Game note- I had to re-learn how fighter planes worked such that their intercept range is half their normal range and intercept missions do not take place until the second IBT after the option is selected)

Week 21, 1943

The small Portugese forces on their homeland are no match for the Red army. Lisbon falls.

South of Oslo, British convoys are now escorted by destroyers, rather than battleships. Clearly the relentless grinding down of the Royal Navy is starting to be felt. The Soviet fleet is ready and waiting for them, as cruisers Tver, Kazan, Tallinn and Smolensk send a task force to the bottom of the ocean.

In the Far East, another crushing victory by Rokossovsky. 8 Japanese infantry units are killed as Kyoto falls. The Imperial Japanese Navy meets disaster as 6 Yamato battleships and the 3 Shokakku carriers are caught in the harbor and scuttled. Their surface fleet is completely gone, only one Otsu submarine remains operational.

Nice progress. It looks like even the British can't follow you anymore in relation to size of your army as they have lost a lot of cities and units.

Another question: do you use radartowers? Obviously you're attacking so in those areas no radartowers (I guess). But have you used them in the period when you were in peace?

Yes, I do use them, but I did not in the original build up stage. I decided that Germany would be busy elsewhere which would allow workers to perform the tasks of building improvements. It was surprising to me that Germany did not strike first, but no complaints. I also destroy the enemy's regularly with bombers before attacking cities and such.
