A World at War

In the game I am actually well ahead in terms of what I've posted, Week 2, 1942 in fact. If I was just doing reports based on turn logs, it would be a simple matter of keeping up, but then I don't think people would find this nearly as interesting.

So without revealing too much about future events, I'll mention some things.

My buildup of Russia followed up much along similar lines as how i did it in Adler's AOI II. So the strategy is build workers, artillery and then figure out the rest later. I think you can probably apply this to many different nations in the scenario.

As of my posted week 24, Germany finished off continental France and then has gone quiet since. Yugoslavia and Greece are still intact, which is odd. They could easily be crushed, so why isn't the AI doing so? I wouldn't think it should have to involve tweaking the aggression level. As a matter of fact, Scananavian countries Norway and Sweden also remain quiet.

Italy is odd in that it has no armored units. Historically, they did have tanks, albeit poor ones. 25 cavalry ain't going to get it done, Il Duce.

Japan has a bunch of Yamato battleships available, but the AI has not shown any ability in expanding to the Phillipines and the many islands in the region. That is probably just reflective of the AIs difficulty to do effective amphibious warfare. But that means all they'll do is face the British and Russian onslaught in China. Landwise, their infantry is respectable. Their Chi-Ha tanks, as historical, nothing to write home about.

I have sent a couple destroyers out to keep an eye on the US, but their fleets are like ghosts. I've seen a few US subs and destroyers, but that is about it. Bull Halsey, where are you?

Germany is, or was, as I reported loaded with panzers, but they are/were the Panzer IIIE variety, and they could do with the IIIG and IIIH models with their higher combat values sooner rather than later. With my stacks of artillery and the now mass-produced KV-1s and T-34s, I can get on top of the situation in time. The Battle of Britain has really put a huge dent in any German large-scale attack. The German AI only has a handful of bombers, and they really can't have an impact on the outcome when the AI insists on bombing a port city full of coastal submarines.

Finland has no answer to the Russian KV-1 tank. With 9 of them and 20-25 artillery I can pretty much plan on conquering them. As I have mentioned in the reports, I actually have substantially more than that committed to that region.

Back in the east, Communist China is down to one city, and Nationalist China not many more. I don't think I would enjoy playing Mao. The Communist Chinese just don't seem to be able to stay on the same field with Japan. So playing them, I think you name your own victory conditions, survive being one option. Nationalist China strategy seems to be one of wait for the British or Russians to come to your rescue.

Turkey/Persia. Infantry or infantry/cav. If you like a challenge, ok. Otherwise, zzzzzzz.

France/Low countries- Just a matter of time until you have to figure out what to do after Germany pushes you out of Europe. And probably that is how it should be.

South American countries- no interest on my part. I have no idea what they are doing.

As to the game itself, the big plus IMO- the inter-turns move well. Maybe 5 minutes. I like general JCL's Barbarossa II scenario, but those IBT periods can run 15 minutes or more.

No railroads allowed, and this far into the game, I'm fine with it. Probably will save me a dozen hours not having to build rails. So I can use that time naming units which I like to do. It also does make me have to organize my forces because they can't just instantly move 3000 miles.

Clearly the scenario has been enormously popular and has been around a long time. Essentially bug-free, although the Soviet Pe-2 bomber seems to have no attack sounds. The Japanese aircraft I have encountered have their own unique sounds which add a nice touch. I changed my Russian infantry so they say uurrah (thanks gen JCL) when they promote. Unit graphics are fine, although there is a French DLM? unit that I guess is supposed to look like a Char-B1-bis that IMO is pretty ugly. But beauty is in the eyes of the beholder as they say.

So I am enjoying it, but then I would only play a handful of the countries. As the Russians, I get my T-34s and artillery stack ready to rumble with the fascists and then crank up this clip.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5hSTTPkp2x4&feature=related

Music doesn't actually start until 0:40, and it's from an old Soviet flick that has a couple corny spots, but still fun, even if you can only understand a word or two if your name isn't Brucha.

So I guess I will put Barbarossa II down as well. I should be up for one in a few weeks, IF my new PC is back and actually works. Had to send it back for the second time, it failed to work out of the box.

I think the style in this story is nice and easy to follow.

Week 25 1941

Northwest Front action sees massed artillery fire followed by tank assault which destroys the Axis forces of Army Group South northwest of Brest Litovsk.

Comrade Stalin, as he will do from time to time, decides to change front names. In the Far East, the Trans-Siberian region has no military activity to speak of. As a result, the Trans-Siberian Front is renamed 2nd Manchurian Front. The original Manchurian Front farther east is re-designated 1st Manchurian Front.

Week 26 1941

The Daimler-Benz facilities at Berlin-Marienfelde produce the first Panzer III-g.

It is a time of consolidation and rest as many Soviet rifle units need to be reconstituted after the losses at Minsk and elsewhere. Nevertheless, they can be replaced. The Germans and their friends have no such luxury.

The Japanese are finding General Zhukov a formidable foe as Seoul falls to 7th Tank Corps, Tank Group "Donskoi" of 1st Manchurian Front. This leaves Pusan as the sole remaining city on the Korean peninsula. Dalian, a city west of the peninsula is also isolated.

Week 6 1942 DeGaulle Intervenes

Charles DeGaulle, Prime-Minister of Free France, landing in the British-controlled port of Brest, had been granted conditional authority to visit Paris to meet with a Soviet delegation to discuss a framework for post-war France. Winston Churchill had been reluctant to allow the visit to Paris, as he was afraid DeGaulle had secret motives. It was no secret that DeGaulle was angry that the Russians were making no overtures about turning over control of mainland France to the Free-French government.

With the pending defeat of Germany, the last thing the British Prime-Minister wanted was a fractious debate that might put the Allies at odds with Soviet Russia. Phillipe Petain, President of the Republic, based in Algiers was likewise highly suspicious of DeGaulle. Their political alliance had been a fragile one since arriving in North Africa. It had been only by the narrowest of margins that DeGaulle had convinced Petain to flee France and set up the provisional government there. For his part, Petain was wary of aggravating the Soviets who physically occupied European France. It was Petain’s hope that after the war was over, he would be able to conclude some timetable for restoring occupied France to control of the French government. He was fearful that DeGaulle had no patience and would make demands on the Soviet delegation.

Before his departure from London where he had a previous meeting with Churchill, DaGaulle knew where the parties stood. England had fought alongside France, but it was Petain who the British government would look to when addressing foreign policy matters and not DeGaulle. And the French could be certain that like Britain, the United States would not risk a major confrontation with Soviet Russia over the present situation.

Upon his arrival at the British controlled port of Brest, instead of proceeding to the arranged meeting with the Soviet delegation, Charles DeGaulle instead went to the Hotel de Ville in Paris where word quickly spread that he would be making an important speech to his countrymenon the future of France.

In a matter of hours, a huge crowd quickly assembled as DeGaulle announced that France would soon be restored to governance by their own people. He called for open resistance to any foreign-controlled governmental apparatus within France. He also promised that Free France would also press Stalin for the immediate return of the Low Countries to the Belgians and Dutch. Any refusal on the part of the Soviet Union should be deemed as incompatible with the interests of western Europeans and for all those who cherish freedom. He called upon all French citizens to bring about a new French revolution and oppose any tyranny which would deny them their rights obtained at such a grievous cost during the first revolution. Finally, he called upon the Soviets to depart Paris without delay, and he himself would remain in the capital until they did so, even if it meant his life.

The speech electrified the population. Within 48 hours, organizations were springing up in the major cities proposing to help organize resistance against the Soviets. Outside of continental France, frantic meetings in the Allied nations were being organized to discuss this latest bombshell. Churchill realized he had been outmaneuvered politically. If DeGaulle had only mentioned France, it would have been one thing. In that case, Churchill could say that it was a matter for President Petain to negotiate. But in mentioning Belgium and Holland, it was a very different story. France was now offering to protect the interests of formerly free nations, just as the British had promised to protect Poland in 1939. It was also clear that these nations truly were in what would be considered the west’s sphere of influence more so than the Eastern Bloc nations. And finally it was acknowledged that if Petain disavowed any notion to help to the Low Countries, it would simply make DeGaulle seem that more appealing as the liberator of their peoples.

In other allied countries, there was even less enthusiasm for what had now taken place. Roosevelt was sure that the American people would adamantly oppose any open confrontation with Russia. After all, they were still fighting a common enemy in Japan.

Within the Persian and the Communist and Nationalist Chinese governments, they feared being swallowed whole in a battle with the Soviets. Communiques to the French capital of Algiers were rapidly sent out in hopes that Petain would somehow stabilize the situation.

In Algiers itself, Phillipe Petain was in a state of anguish. That fool thinks he is Napoleon re-born, the President of the Republic thought. And if left to his own devices, he will bring the same fate to himself as Bonaparte.

What options did he have? If he ordered DeGaulle back to Algiers, DeGaulle would simply ignore him. If he called for DeGaulle’s dismissal, on what grounds would it be? That he promised the people their salvation? That he calls for them to oppose foreign occupation? That he exceeded his authority? He is the Prime Minister of Free-France. No, thought Petain. The damage has been done. What work must be done will have to come through the back channels, and quickly before the situation is out of everyone’s control.

In Moscow, Josef Stalin was furious. Under the guise of negotiation, this Frenchman was now calling for open rebellion against Soviet state. There was only one way to deal with that. He ordered General Koniev to communicate to the commander of the Paris garrison that they were to proceed at once to the Hotel de Ville and apprehend DeGaulle, alive if possible.

The next day, the Soviet 474th Rifle Regiment with tank support was forced to battle its way to the hotel, through armed resistance that took several hundred lives on both sides. When the attackers reached the hotel, they did not know where DeGaulle was exactly. The Prime Minister had no intention of going peaceably. He appeared on the front balcony, shouting down and daring that the Russians shoot him, and put the finishing touch on an international incident that would reach every corner of the world.

But the Soviet commander would have none of that, and instead ordered his men to storm the hotel. Within 30 minutes, and at the cost of more lives, Charles DeGaulle was a prisoner of the Russians. Another 24 hours passed before word of his fate was known.

Before long, he was back at the port of Brest, a British submarine having been given permission to take DeGaulle back to England. He was escorted to the dock, where the captain of HMS Seawolf prepared to take on the passenger.

Captain Hughes, commander of HMS Seawolf, was handed an envelope. It is a judgment from a summary court trial held in absentia of his passenger. Charles DeGaulle has been found guilty of anti-Soviet activities, specifically for calling upon others to rebel against Soviet authority. The accused was found guilty and sentenced to death. However, the General Secretary of the Soviet Union has instructed that the penalty be held in abeyance, under the sole condition that the guilty party not return to territories administered by the USSR without proper Soviet authority. Should he attempt otherwise, the sentence is re-instated and to be carried out immediately.

In this scenario, how much corruption do the British India cities have? Are they producitive at all or does the Empire have to build units in Canada & Australia and ship them over there?

Also, what's the general picture on luxuries in this mod? Are you getting all of them? Is Britain needing to stretch out around the globe to lux up in order to keep its democracy citizens quiet about their war weariness?

Bombay.jpg
[/IMG]

Here is Bombay and as you can see is 20% corrupt, and has more than adequate luxuries. My own luxuries aren't much of an issue either, when the markets are in place. The AI doesn't act in a strategic sense that it knows to ship troops to a single place where it will gather all units together. There is nothing I have seen to indicate the British AI is transporting troops from Canada, so they may well sit there for much of the game.

Britain has no lack of naval power, as their Lion-class battleships take a lot to bring down. I would say it takes 20 submarines to bring down just one of them, so to vmxa's point, I don't have 108 subs any more as you will see.

One other interesting note about the game is the inability of infantry to pillage. The AI still behaves as if it does have the ability, sending stacks of units onto resource tiles and then sitting on them for a turn as if it was trying to cut them. Makes for a rather hapless-looking situation actually.

Plant a spy in Washington. Our spy brings back word that United States Navy and the Imperial Japanese Navy have bludgeoned each other without mercy in the Pacific. The US Pacific Fleet is a shadow of its former self and it appears the Congress has not seen fit to authorize the building of new ships in significant quantity.

US and Japanese naval losses since the start of the war are estimated as

United States
2 fleet carriers Yorktown class
2 fleet carriers Lexington class
12 battleships
13 cruisers
16 light cruisers
164 destroyers
49 submarines

Japan
3 fleet carriers

40 submarines

The IJN no longer has any cruisers, destroyers or submarines. Only the Yamato-class battleships preserve her power to keep her enemies at bay.
