Hello!

I am playing on Warlord Level as the Persians against 15 other Civs in a HUGE continental World.

Hehe, guess what happened... it is around 1350 and I developed STEAM POWER.

I already killed the French, the Babylonians, the Zulu, the Germans and the English and lead in Tech and Histograph score with 3:1. Good game, I own a continent reminding of Nord/South America, I called the City at the narrow passage Panama, ships can ship through there. :)

There is one small Island besides Panama, I called it Cuba. 2 Tiles. The only other Island on the Map is 2x3 and is completely rocky, has iron and gold but no place to settle anywhere.

The other landmass is a huge interconnected continent with a lot of narrow connections.

OKAY...
I wanted to build some railroads, but... HEY, ALL COAL SPOTS ARE...

on the enemies continent. And as bad luck wants, just in the territory of the Romans and Iroquese that have a war with me because I killed one Roman Settler trying to settle on my main continent. The mutual protection pact lead to an all out war against me, that is no problem... but now there is nobody that can deliver me coal, except the Americans that cannot trade or already traded their 2nd excess coal.

I hope for peace and a trade agreement, but I already began preparing Galleons and Cavalry plus Riflemen to set over to the Iroquese and conquer one of their coal spots.

The Romans are back in science, and weak, but they are in my south where all my weak and corruption (I switched to Democracy some turns ago) plagued cities are. Need to build a FP there, that would really require a leader to hurry up. :(

Hope that my large continent has some rubber and oil at least for the future...

I am still stuck with Riflemen and Cavalry and cannons, it is still a long way to develop armor and Infantry. But my industrialization and my railroad network are ABSOLUTELY hampered by the lack of coal!

A new source of iron showed up exactly where it disappeared thousand years ago, strange... hope that coal shows up, too...^^

This gives the game a nice touch - the super strong and super strong empire of the Persians, leading in science and everything else, falls back because it has no factories, railroads and coal...

Any hints how to overcome the situation? I am playing Civ 1.29F without PTW, if someone is interested in taking a look,

he can download the savegame there:

Well you could just conquer the other continets. :)

You can always check the trade screen each turn to see if a trade opens up. Also, try builing up an attack force to take out a city with coal (if possible).

Found coal near a city on MY continent... woah. Took nevertheless an Iroquese City and signed a peace treaty, while shipping strong troops there to keep that coal source for sure... :)

Any other players might take a look how BAD corruption is affecting the southern half of my empire... I need 67 turns right now to build a Forbidden Palace in Berlin. All othe cities would take even longer. :(

You can press CTRL-SHIFT-M to see the terrain better (and terrain under cities). You can also use an easy-to-spot graphics modpack, such as one with icons. It's good if you have trouble seeing it.

edit: Too late - that's what I get for opening the thread and then wandering away. :) I'll leave the rest anyway.

You said you're ahead in tech -- is it possibly that the reason the Americans can't trade their coal to you that they haven't yet discovered steam power? If that's the case, you could sell it to them, then buy the coal.

If not, you could take an educated guess at who the Americans are selling their coal to, declare war on that civ, then bribe the Americans into joining you. That'd break the trade route, and free up the Americans' second coal to sell to you.

Before you do anything drastic, though, take a really good close look at each and every unroaded hill and mountain in your current territory. I can't think how many times I could have sworn I had no coal, only to find out later it was there all along.

PS With regards corruption: By the time you get steam power, you should long have had a forbidden palace already. Even just one or two cities away from your palace will generally give you enough low-corruption cities to win however you wish, especially compared to having none at all for so long.

Well thats kinda unlucky. My last game that I won, there were no silks and gems. At all. On the entire map. VERY frusturating.

Just had the exact same problem myself.

Aztec Empire on Monarch level, hits Steam Power and has no coal, trades are a non starter so I start gearing up for war building lots of Cav. and Rifles.
Just as I'm ready to assualt a bigger and quite possibly tougher empire, the Persians, coal is found on my land and war is averted. Phew.

Yes, silk is very rare to find. I had an experience like that as well but not for gems.
I even forgot about silk it is so rare.

well that really sucks but ive never had no coal only no oil :aargh:    :aargh:

Renata was right. I even used the SHIFT-CTRL-M thing to search for coal, but still overlooked it.

My Forbidden Palace will be built in Berlin, more than 4 screens down of my Capital. Guess this will really rock this region when its finished. :)

It was my fault not to see the coal, by accident a worker built a road on it and then voila... :)

But how about this: SHOW STRATEGIC RESOURCES on the minimap.

This button would toggle a blinking blue spot for iron, a black for coal on and so on... would really be helpful!
