About some unique units

Berzerkers don't come late. They are useful for as long time as Immortals, or longer. The fact that they don't require any resources makes them very useful if you don't have any horses.

I was hoping for a Viking Longboat... (1 extra movement and/or safe sea travel).

Anyway, I like the War Elephants. They seem to be the most successful Chivalry unit (along with Samurai), and can enable a well timed golden age.

The Chinese Riders are quite useful too. I don't really know how the mongol Knight works, and I know there is one other unit that works exactly like the chinese rider.

1 more in movement rocks.

The real burn is between the Cossack and the Siphai. The Cossack is terribly useless now.
Not really, the Siphai cost the same as Tanks.

I really love those Uniques! But you have to be prepared to make good use of them the time that come available.

I ruler of Persia can build immortals iso swordsmen. So when i looked at what made them special (4 attack-factor) the babylonians became much less of a nuicance. Now i never start wars in this game. but now (my first game on regent) everyone seems to hate me. so i've stopped the growth of my empire a little, and started mass producing Immortals, still the babylonians kept pissing me off. don't really know why since they must realise by now that I am stronger than them.
So they declare war. I'm in tears! what do i do? i don't like war! so i take their capital with my immortals and welcome those nice folks in my civ.
SO use your UU wisely.
Now i'm still playing the same game. about 2000 years later. i'm flying around the americans to check if they have their F-15's. Have seen them yet. but the've stopped liking me the last 50 years. Maybe i'll see them in action.

is it worth it? a UU so late in the game?

Why does everyone associate beserks with boats? They would make awesome land units.

On topic.

Each UU has its own weaknesses and strengths. When most people look at units they first see the A/D/M. If the unit looks weak, it will normally be passed up. In order to appreciate the full benefits of a unit, you must look at all of its statistics. In PTW, the game designers have paid more attention to the "minor details" making some short sighted people to look at many of these units with disgust. In the end, we should look at all the units and features of the game from all angles before we make our decisions.

P.S. This is my 50th post! [party]

Anyone notice that the Greeks get 2 UUs?

The Hoplite gives them a spearman with a +1 defence. It also lasts until musketmen - hence a cheap pikeman requiring no Iron!

I like the idea of the Indians being able to flog the resources that they don't use for the Elephants - I never thought of that.

As for the new UUs, people are only grumbling because their bonuses are different to the original UUs. They look unbalancing at first, but their cost keeps things even. One bonus that Firaxis seem to have overlooked, though is the HP modifier. One of my own custom UUs has a +1 HP modifier to represent durability in battle. Adding blitz to a unit with more than 1 movement point is also a potent bonus.

who cares what the D is - I bring 1 Galley of cheap units (like warriors left over), 3 Galleys of 'zerkers, 1 Galley of vet Spears/Pikes.

Galley 1 offloads to two tiles next to city. other Galleys stay three tiles away.

End turn

AI attakcs the two units with attakcers they have in the city. They die or get hurt - and if they are not fast units they are OUTSIDE the city. In come the other Galleys: 6 times A=6 vs. defenders = dead meat. Even Med Inf regularly die! Pikemen sometimes hold out though. THen, the last Galley puts the two Spears/Pikes in the city - the AI has yet to take one of these cities from me!

Maybe it wouldnt be good for game balance, but longboats would deserve safe travel even in ocean squares, since they sailed as far as Greenland and the american continent.

It struck me how the Numadian Merc upgrades into pikeman. That means same cost (I think) but one LESS attack point, AND requiring iron! Balances the game as far as I can tell, since Carthrage is Industrious/commercial, which are two great traits that the French had with their sucky musketeers.

The Numidians do not upgrade to pikeman. I was them in my last game and never got the option to upgrade them if I recall correctly.

Really? Then never mind then

Killer, this sounds like a similar problem that the immortals present, but if you manage to attack them first they become easy to defeat.

Well then aneas of troy, I would sure like you to enligten me on the weaknesses of the berserk. I think they should be 5/1/1. That would be an appropriate substitute IMO.

They only got 2 in defense, and Galleys are easily sunk by other galleys. And they are quite expensive, so you don't want to loose them.

And you can't upgrade to them.
