So, ah... hello.

I've never played a Civ MP game in my life and I'm wondering how to go about it. I can see tons of games hosted when I click the MP option, but I don't know how one joins a game -- I didn't think it was cool to just invite myself to a random game. Tried popping into the Civilization Players League chatroom on Steam, but nobody seems to be actually participating in the chat and I got no response. Is there somewhere I can sign up to play a low-key MP game with decent people who don't mind putting up with a noob?

I am also just beginning to explore MP. Seems the best way to start out is try a couple games as you mentioned, then begin asking around in the civplayers chat. If you ask questions in the chat, someone will eventually help you along.

Like NWO has stated you can come to the Civplayers lobby, you don't have to join the league, but you can find both league and open games in our chat.

It's basically a place to network with other MP players as we do not have a built in lobby.

Hey hey! I'm in the same boat as you. I'm actually new to Civ in general, and after playing a few games on my own, I'd really like to try some MP stuff without waiting to arrange online meeting times with friends. Send me a PM if you'd like to be n00bs together? I joined the Steam community that was suggested above as well.

also mp noob, not too sure what I think of the mp because it seems like people just try to wipe each other out as soon as possible guess the only option is to give it a go so pm if you're keen for a quick game some time.

How are you going to have a 'quick game' w/o trying to wipe the other guy out as soon as possible?

Seriously though, I do understand the feelings of some players who prefer having some time to develop before any serious conflicts start. But on the other side, there are players who would be happier being able to play two or three games in a night rather than one long one when their availability is limited. And likewise, some players are not going to be satisfied with their play if they know they aren't playing optimally at all times- which usually involves going for quick wins since allowing your opponent time to work their own plans is seldom an optimal strategy.

Ironically most of my friends that are in the elite ranks of RTS players actually prefer it if they play an early rush and they get defeated, since it means they have an opponent who can challenge them and provide a more satisfying game. If your opponent won't challenge you, then better to have the quick win to move on to another game than sit there are have your time wasted if running out the game for another hour or two still results in a win for you.
