According to Lore shouldn't the Illians be neutral?

Sure they used to be evil but now they have no god.
Shouldn't they be neutral like the equally godless Gregori?

They have a "god", Auric Ulvin, who in fact is more "evil" than Mulcarn was, as he aspires to become like Mulcarn, thanks to the precept of Ice/Winter that he inherited from Mulcarn, because what the men remember of Mulcarn is his dreadful reign during the Age of Ice. Auric Ulvin has no idea that the sphere of Ice had also a positive effect in giving the world temporary rests. So, Auric and the Illians want a God of Winter as they see Mulcarn: a destructive and oppressive god.

This attitude is totally conform to the corrupt form of the precept of Ice (=Winter), as it's basically about nostalgia and reactionarism, even if the "good old days" wasn't so good or if you have a totally wrong memory.

And the principal reason for the Grigori to be neutral is probably the philosophy of Cassiel, who not only say that gods have no right to intervene in Creation, but that Good and Evil gods, and their followers, as extremists, are essentially the same. For him, Basium is not much better than Hyborem.

Mulcarn was the least evil of the Evil gods, the one whose precept remained the least corrupted and most faithful to its original purpose. Not long before he invaded Erebus he acknowledges that all the other gods play an important role in creation too but was upset that mortals refused to honor him and recognize that without winter there could be no spring.

The sphere of winter is a nostalgic one, so the god who rules it tends to long for a return to earlier times, the way he remembers it rather than the way things really were. Mulcarn longed for a return to the time when he could create ex nihilo, to the time before the godswar, and then to the time of the godswar when mortals were humble and honored him out of fear. Auric knows nothing of the true origin of the world, so the past to which the sphere makes him aspire is the time when the world was firmly under the tyranny of the god of winter. His memory of Mulcarn is based more on popular conception of him as a brutal tyrant, so when he tries to become a god he becomes even more brutal than Mulcarn ever was.

As he approaches ascension Auric should most certainly be evil. Neutral fits him well in his boyhood, but he was not really a leader of the Illians until then. in my modmod, I make him neutral until you find Letum Frigus, which is required in order to get the Auric unit and in order to access the various Illian rituals.

I would agree that the Illian leader Braeden the Laconic probably ought to be neutral, but he doesn't really appear outside of the scenarios and is meant to be very weak. I'm thinking I may make him more of a real leader in my version now, a neutral one who is allowed to adopt religions and cannot access the winter rituals (except maybe Sanhaim). (The Ashes of Brigdarrow does seem to imply that many Illians turned to Danalin when Mulcarn died, so OO would probably fit him best.)

Thanks that clears it up for me.

I like it but be careful to document it in the character selection screen. Otherwise it could be a big letdown to the new player set on godhood.

Of the ModMods I have tried so far I really dislike it when they add in all these cool looking leaders and heros but when you look them up all you see is a blank entry where FFH would almost always have an amazing backstory. Looking forward to trying out your mod as I strongly suspect thats not the case =)

As an aside what are your thoughts on the Frozen. The idea of a third fallow summonable civ whos only goal is to turn the world back into an iceball one tile at a time is interesting.
