Accusing someone of Cheating

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of playing against a top-notched opponent (whose name I shall withhold). A pleasurable game turned into a messy argument with accusations of cheating.

To brief, he started on one island and I started on another. We didn't come in contact yet, but with the top 5 cities screen view I could see his cities were being left undefended. So I get mapmaking and I'm exploring the nearby islands. So on and so forth. Then I see a road on this island and so I send my horsie to explore. I see a river, so I hop on it for the bonus movement points. And there it is - Berlin - and *gasp* empty!

So what do I do? I go in and make my horseman comfortable. Feels right at home. Yup. Ravaged the capital city like it's the last day on earth, and I burn his palace down just for effect.

Then, come the words, "You are cheating!"

To this, I'm shocked and ****-ng pissed. One thing I do not do, never did, and never will is cheating in anything. I do not cheat in principle, I do not cheat in action - I do not cheat in any shape or form or no-form. Then I get accused because this guy left his cap city undefended. Jesus.

Basically his argument was, How can you land right on my cap if it was our first contact. It's impossible. My response was, Dude, relax, it happens all the time. But he won't stop. He says I mapped the game, blah blah blah. And then he remarks how if I didn't cheat, I'm such a lucky player, blah blah blah. I tell him about my reputation and my standing in Gameleague, a proud #4. But those words fall on deaf ears.

After hours of arguing and insulting (both ways) - and listing the names of people who could vouch for me on my honorable character - he finally relents and tells me maybe I got lucky. It was close to impossible, but I got lucky. And so he tells me how I'm not a really good player, blah blah blah.

I do not deserve this. I have played this game with honor and enthusiasm, and I don't deserve to be called outright that I am a cheater.

So I post this incident to remind everyone: If you think your opponent is cheating, just make sure you know what you are talking about. Have some proof. Give it some thought. And surely, don't be an idiot and go witchhunting. I never cheated, I don't cheat, and I will never cheat. Get that straight in your head.

(And as a post-remark - he played me the next game and got two quick cities in the first 4-5 turns, before I pumped out my first horseman. Then, his horseman comes out of nowhere and kills my exploring unit, just 5-6 squares away from my cap. Did I jump up and down and call him a cheater? That he mapped the board to approach my capital? That he pumped out those cities by using a cheomatic? No. I simply told him, go report. That's what happens sometimes in this game.)

you must have played Eyes of Night :p

I suspect the other player posted in the general or strategy forum (I can't remember which). A certain somebody was whining about being the victim of a dishonorable attack on his undefended capitol. Needless to say, he got laughed at post after post...

If your dumb enough to leave your cap undefended in a duel, you get what you deserve.

It wouldn't matter if I had my cap undefended cause you would be dead before you explore around your capital =)

Well, if my brother didn't take the cd to college I would be saying that =(
