Achievements not unlocking?

Has anyone else had issues with achievements not being awarded when they should be? In my last few games I've discovered Australia in the Polynesian scenario, won a (multiplayer) game as Ramkhanhaeng when I didn't previously have the Siam achievement, and just played a game where, as Darius, I've started at least six Golden Age of the game (all but one from GPs). I did get the multiplayer victory achievement, so it doesn't seem to be a connection problem at the time of completing these achievements. Or are there tricks to the Persian one I don't know, and does 'Beat the game as X' only apply in single player?

Very important information for anyone who wants to get achievements:
-If you have any mod installed you can not get achievements and you won't make progress towards them either!
-Many achievements will NOT work, if you disabled reward popups in the game options. Make sure this option is NOT checked! (seriously Firaxis?)
-You also can not get achievements while playing in offline-mode or in multiplayer.

If you can't get achievements in multiplayer, how would one get the achievement in which you have to win a multiplayer match?

Presumably the 'download/play mods' ones are exceptions to the mods too. That explains that one (and was what I suspected), but not sure what the trick is to the other - none of the flagged items applied. With 'Discover Australia' I wonder if the whole island (well, the northern bit is all that's on the map) has to be discovered? I found only the coast of Queensland before the game ended. Is there some additional trick to the Persian one - do the Golden Ages have to be consecutive, or started as a result of happiness rather than GPs?

Yes. The 3 mod related achievements technically happen within the game menu, not inside a started game (take that as an explanation attempt if you will).

As soon as the popup comes (You've discovered...) you'll get the achievement.
If you don't: Chances are 99% you have reward popups in the options disabled or a mod installed and 1% that you were temporarily disconnected (wlan).

For Persia: The GAs must all be happiness triggered. A wonder/SP bonus GA and GAs started by great people consumption do not count.
Moreover a GA must end before a new one can start. So prolonging a GA doesn't count (a happiness triggered GA can never be an extending one, just the above mentioned examples can do that).
So as a conclusion - you can get this achievement faster if you do not build Chichen Itza and do not finish the freedom sp branch.

For Polynesian Scenario relating to exploring you will only get the achievements once a pop-up comes up telling you discovered "The Easter Islands" or "Australia".
