Who would you cast (or recast?) and for what role if you were making a movie?

I always thought Dan Aykroyd would make a good Rev. Jim Jones of Jonestown if you could go back to the ‘80s.

TV, not a movie, but when I was younger I wanted Val Kilmer in title role if they ever rebooted Hogan's Heroes. Don't remember exactly why. For some reason I remember him look more like Bob Crane than he actually did.

It's kind of a strange thing to think, recasting. You'd have to consider just what the heck is the "idea" separate from the performance, consider who would do that idea better, and how that would play in with everything else staying the same and therefore how it came about.

Like, what idea was so good, rest of the movie such that you cared to "fix it", and the actor would have been better with someone you can think of in the removed abstract? Def not my strength. Especially when I try to "think of something" all I can think about are those performances which are iconic in my head, and can't be recast.

But if I were making say Final Fantasy 6 into a movie, and I were casting people in this thread, Danjuno would be Edgar, Amadeus is Ultros.

I could see that.

But if they ever did that nowadays they’d cast Jack Black as Hogan and Seth Rogan as Sgt. Schultz. Maybe I should just delete this message before anyone from Hollywood gets the idea.

I think they did a great job with Raul Julia for The Addams Family movie in place of John Astin from the original ‘60s series.

And I believe John Goodman was the reason the live-action version of The Flintstones got made. He did a great job in the part even if the plot (frame him for embezzlement) was a bit wonky.

I think old TV adaptations are the easiest to think of since there’s already a story. Recasting is a bit more of a challenge—for good and bad movies alike—because like you say, who else could you see playing these parts?

I think you could swap in Jim Carey for almost any role if he was interested in being the "serious" Jim Carey.

Oh here's one, how about swaps within a movie. Like in the 96 Romeo and Juliet, Swapping actors for Romeo and Mercutio as I think both actors were succeeding in the same emotional window at the same intensity, and weirdly would have been the same.

While I'm starting to brew on the topic, I think a lot of elves need to be swapped out purely by appearance in media. There's a narrow line between looking Elvish and Elfin and both need to be struck. Lord of the Rings cast good elf personalities, looks, I disagree on all of them, some worse than others. The Amazon one is even worse. The range of actors who look like how elves should look span all backgrounds, but so few meet it. It's not even about straight beauty nor youth, although the correlation is high.

I couldn't buy Amy Ryan as a badass CIA chief in Central Intelligence (b/c of her character in the Office). Viola Davis in her Suicide Squad badass mode.

Gori would be Locke

Klaus is Gao's dad
