Advanced Start - Medieval Game

I am wondering if anyone is interested in trying an advanced start/Medieval era start game. I was thinking of a larger map (either normal or large) and a little more than default starting points (~2500 on a large map) with maybe 6 players? 5 on a normal? More players than that gets to tough for PBEM, imho. I don't know if there is any great aversion to adv. start, but it would be interesting to play with a little room to spread out before contact but still not take forever to meet. I would also like to consider a 'no tech trading' game, although I have not actually been in one yet....it would be nice not to be dependent on trading to keep from falling behind :(.

Any comments or interested parties?

Never played adv start before so I'll give it a go.

I think large map would be too big for 5 or 6, 5 would probably be best number for what you're looking for on normal size. You can always adjust the map settings i.e map type, water level also to suit what you are looking for.

I have played a few in single player, and one in pitboss....I recommend starting up a single player game with adv. start and kind of playing around with it....maybe regen the map after you have set up. I think for PBEM it will really speed up the 'move one unit every now and then' phase....

Yeah, I am going to play with the map size a bit...with the adv. start, you will have 4 or 5 cities to play with, probably, so it gives you a good base to start with...it may 'shrink' the map a bit....

I'm in a PBEM advanced start game now, and I like it. Removes a lot of the uneventful starting turns and gets things going much better. Also in a separate pitboss no tech trading game - it makes warmongering a much riskier proposition since a peacemonger can later make greater (longer) use of a military tech advantage, and the early warmonger has a tougher job catching up. But, it will slow the game down.

In any case, I'd be interested in playing.

That was my thinking, but not a whole lot of experience at it myself. I will count you in....I am going to wait for 5 or more, though, so it may be a little while until I get the other two or three....

you still looking for players for the PBEM game? i want in! if its still going on let me know and i'll give my email address.

Okay, that makes six. I think for PBEM, that is as much as is practical. Send me a PM with your email (already got yours, Burlic and Dwaarf).

A couple of questions for y'all:
How many points? - 2,500 seemed like a good number, but we can go with a more or less if you think that works better. We SHOULD have some space, so we shouldn't bump up against each other during set up. I highly recommend starting a couple of faux games to see how much 2,500 buys you in a medieval setting, and also help you figure out what you might like to invest in.

Leaders - 1) Random, 2) pick your leader, 3) other options? (we did a 'non-financial' leader game, which helps vary strategy some).

Huts on or off? (I can go either way on these)

Random events on or off? (kind of like these, but can do without).

Type of map? Fractal? Continents? Islands? We can probably go a higher sea level, too, with this much space. Other suggestions?

Maybe without financial, but with restricted leaders?
I also wonder, because of advanced start, how would it be- the first player can cature land "between" two players, and that's not the natural way...
Also, because of speed, I will highly recommend some occasional sessions, they can be only one hour, but it will speed up game a lot.
Some other oppinion?

With the adv. start, yes, you can capture land between players, although there is a 'halo' area around each player that you cannot enter, even though that player has not built his civ yet....the first player cannot build right up next to the second players starting point. Also, I am thinking we look to have 5 players, and if we start on a normal sized world, we should not be all that close.

As for occasional sessions, I know that Dwaarf is in England and Burlic is in Serbia. I am in Texas. I am not sure about Kaspog or Hesterate. Anyway, I am not sure how many sessions we could get in easily. On the other hand, our 'Lovel Day' game has often gotten two or three turns a day (esp. on weekends), which is really nice.

On the other hand, I COULD pitboss the game, if y'all are interested, but I would still have to use GameSpy. For those not familiar, you have to log in using the 'internet' option instead of the 'PBEM' option and also make a gamespy account (free).

yeah, you hosted one pitboss and congratulations on that. You did realy f=great job, with lot of patience and willing...
I'm interested both in PBEM and pitboss game...
Also, I would like to hear some new idea. I said non fin, with unrestricted, but maybe some has something more to propose?
