Advice for insomnia

Keep a regulart sleep schedule
^This usualy works for me too. Usualy...

Anyway, alcohol is not very good, i remember coming home from a party where i drank some glasses whisky and lots of gin and i couldn't get any sleep. My body was completley exhausted but my mind didn't want to shut up. :)

I remember my mom having some herbal tea with i dunno what in it to help her sleep.
Also massage or sauna before going to sleep probably works.

I remember when i was depressed a long time ago, crying made me fall asleep imediatly.

But nowadays when i can't sleep i try to think about really mind-boggling stuff :D. There are lots of topics for me.

A) Religion: think about your religious beliefs, imagine arguing with a guy from a different religion.
B) Philosophy: try to find as many answers to those philosophical questions as possible. And from as many points of views as possible.
C) Empathy: imagine how the ppl around you react to certain situations.
D) My Mod: you can think of ideas for a civ mod. :D This works for me.

These usually work too. :) You will fall asleep without realising.
(i may post some more "topics" later)

A cure for insomnia? Simple.

Come downstairs turn on PC read one of my posts on OT and your eyes will slowly close. :D

I hope your mouse mat is a comfortable forehead pillow!

Is that tea with a nip of brandy or is it another drug like a barbiturate or antihystemine type thing in a tea form? Or some over the counter medicine? Or is it herbal like camomile?
Rooibos Tea with balm (sp). It's more to have a specific "going-to-bed" ritual than for it's own effects; although it has a calming effect.

Thanks for that, I'm not sure it's available in the UK but I'm sure it'll get over here eventually.:)

Xenocrates I think you are more interesting than you give yourself credit for.

Diverting your attention away from what is bothering you is also good, it's best to think of issues when you are alert and capable of understanding them no doubt, thanks Heretic :)

The phrase sleep on it you may feel differently in the morning is very wise.

Malt drinks relax me, and thanks to everyone who posted tips

Oh and also another tip:
Get rid off the clocks/watches in your room. I don't mean you should throw them out the window (but if it makes you feel better you can do that), just turn them around so that you won't see the time.
Because every time you look at it you think , "damn it, 3 hours have passed and i still didn't fall asleep, grrr". It will put some more stress on your head.

I have a lot of these kinds of sayings... But here's one that suits this situation :"Happy are those that do not want to know what time it is." (yes, it sounds a lot better in romanian:p)

I'm too old for the army.

I first saw Rooibos in the UK about ten years ago, so I'm quite sure you can get it there.
It comes (or at least then used to) with hilarious claims of curing everyting.
That means pneumonia, warts, high blood pressure, cancer, aids....

Thanks, well sounds like most herbal remedies, it just has more bs to go round, some herbal remedies do produce results, some are little more than placebos, but then the placebo effect can sometimes be quite remarkable. Trouble is I'm a sceptic about 99% of herbal remedies, so I'd probably not get an effect from it.

I slept well over the weekend I got my maths coursework done and the assesment question, my tutor never replied and I figured my problems out for myself, damned email not working on the OU server, bugger. I'm back to work and it was a tiring monday so I'm guessing I should sleep like a baby tonight, not a care in the world :) All is well in Tir Na Nog.

When I have Insomnia its usually because I have worries ..... family, work and whatnot.

What I usually do is :

I take my pillow and a blanket and I go lie down on my sofa in front of the Television. Usually works wonders ..... in 1/2 an hour I'm passed out!

If that dosent work I drink tons of milk!

As I've pointed out; my GF has most benefit of it because it is the start of a "going-to-sleep" ritual. It's not the Rooibos-tea that makes her fall asleep (although it definately has a calming effect); it's the ritual itself that triggers a "Hey - I'm going to sleep soon" - reaction in the body/mind.
Another plant with a calming effect is Valerian. This one also will not make you fall asleep; but its calming effect can be used as the start of the "falling asleep" procedure. (Or so my GF claims). It's not a matter of believing or being sceptical, it's not a matter of instant effect; it's a matter of using it to get in the right mood so that (in your case) falling asleep is easier. I don't think it can cure pneumonia, warts, high blood pressure, cancer, aids ... but I'm convinced it does a better job at it then smoking, anthrax, mars-bars etc. ;)
