Greetings fellow Civ players, I recently started getting into the game a little over a month ago, I am playing currently on the noble lvl.

During my current game (noble, temperate, terra, large). My starting city (non coastal) is sitting on a river with a good amount a flood plains a just a few scattered mines. I plan to maximize this city to grow large commerce (cottages)
and eventually turn into a good super science city.

My problem is that the surrounding area, while a good amount of resouces (silk, sheep, etc) is a mix of flood plains, grasslands with some forests and desert spots (very very few mines , My question is that I plan on the first city a commerce/science site, 2nd a coastal GP Farm, and the 3rd city (yet to be placed) as a production house. There isnt a good spot with mines around or anything like that so what can i do in this situation?

Again there are a good amount of forests and flood plain/river spots but thats really it. Do i pick a forest spot and wait for lumbermill? Do i pick a good food site and workshop the heck outta it?

Im really in a jam and cant really decide on what is best. Advice is needed and always appreciated. Thanks guys.

Well, actually ive decided to restart that game. For some odd reason, the random generater decided to make 4 continents yet put all 10 of us on the smallest island (island about 1/2 of small map about). After a few turns I realized everyone had 3 cities down and NO ONE had cities with actual touching boarders (always a different civ in between)

Needless to say, thats not really the kinda tense game I was looking for. Everyone went war within first 50 turns.

Although I am not in the same game, what would have been my options if I was in area with very few mines and most grasslands? Im scared of the thought of building a pure workshop production city..Should I be?

Again, any advice would help me adventures...thanks guys.

Try to find another spot with as much food as possible, then go for slavery civic and pop rush your units. Slavery is so powerful it's nearly imbalanced if used correctly. You can get a city with abundant food to have a bigger production rate than a city with lots o' mines. There's a good article about how to use it in the Strats Article Forum.
