AG2 - Democracy rules the world

IHT: Everything looks good; we'll want to get an FP sooner rather than later, and I figure New York is the place for the job.

Spot that the peace deal with the Dutch is up for renegotiation; foolishly, I do so intending to get rid of the 4gpt payment but they make me pay 80g+3gpt instead  Sorry about that.

130 BC (1) Washington temple - sword. St. Louis temple - market. Disband our scouts for 4gpt extra - got to make it up somehow.

110 BC (2) Miami temple - market. A French warrior moves up right next to conscript-defended Atlanta - surely they're not going to declare ?

90 BC (3) And they don't - just moving around their warrior. New York Temple - Forbiddden Palace, due in 23. Atlanta worker - harbour. Disband a regular warriro in Boston.

50 BC (5) Renegotiate furs & horses to Babylon for Mono, Spices + 100 gold. Mono + 39gpt to Germany for Feudalism. Furs to Holland for Literature+8 gold, intriguingly the best offer.

10 BC (7) Establish an embassy in London for 58g (building a University already), in Babylon for 87g (building a Cavalry  ), in Moscow (building a Cossack :( ). and in Paris for 80 or so gold (still on knights). Washington MI-MI.

10 AD (8) Philly barracks - granary.

30 AD (9) Dutch start Cop's - I can only assume someone beelined for Cavs. It seems Russia, Babylon and England are at war with China, which is a pity, as they're the only ones lacking iron and I had hoped to get a trade route with them eventually. As it is, they'll probably be pounded into oblivion eventually before we can profit.

50 AD (10) French want us to join the dogpile against China - since we can't really swing a tech deal for the alliance, we say no. Babs ----> Bach's.
Washington & Detroit, MI to MI and granary respectively.

Let's not wait too long with claiming the cities to our west!

I think the only city we can realistically grab is the French one (can you imagine defending against the Russian Cossacks with spears and MI  ) and it has only 4 land squares in which a resource might appear - are you sure it's worth the risk ?

Markets should IMHO be our priority.

aggie: I do not think so. the Ais will pile in and have a few hunded units on the march for our towns - they will DEMAND stuff for peace, not GIVE!

Quite so; I've had games where I took 2-3 towns and still had to pay for peace. I don't think the French town would be worth more than 50 gold or so at best.

Two warmongers telling me to wait. That must be taken seriously I guess :)

let's face it: we have probably no chance to win this one, even if we ditch the variant right now. So we must be extra cautious with every decision if we want to get back out of the hole we are in!

Pre Turn ; 50 AD; I don’t see how our empire will be more effective by conquering some of the western cities right now. Focus on improving cities.
We are behind, backward, weak, pathetic, loosers, and more of that….

Turn 1; 70 AD; Buffalo has a market. Library? Washington makes a MI. Well… yeah… What a sucky game! I never make Mis. I prefer horsies and the like.
Turn 2; 90 AD; decide to switch to library in Washington. Don’t know why exactly.
IT: English are at war with Chines too.
Turn 3; 110 AD; Boston: market=> library. 1 science specialist, to see if it makes trade for invention possible.
Turn 4; 130 AD; For a zillion gold, we can buy invention now….
Turn 5; 150 AD;
Turn 6; 170 AD;
Turn 7; 190 AD;
Turn 8; 210 AD; MI in Detroit.
Turn 9; 230 AD; We are fairly rich. That’s the only thing good! I move troops. I will bring our Mis in position to conquer the 2 Dutch cities. This might be stupid, but this game ain’t going to be that much anyway, if we do nothing.
IT: Russians finish Copernicus…….
Turn 10; 250 AD; Nothing special

I say: Rush a MI in Detroit, and hit the Dutch asap! Not a chance to beat the swiss mercenaries, I guess…. Maybe hit the French?

I don’t know……

Thank you very much, I appreciate that!

Anyway...We have a lot of money and all we do is getting more? We should buy ourselves into techs, open trade possibilities. So we NEED to get Theology and Education and hope for opportunities there. I really don't understand why we haven't traded in these crucial times. We were one of the frontrunners in tech at the start of the MA and now we are far far behind. Talk about missed opportunities.

I fully agree with taking the two Dutch towns, but we need more MDI's.

I'll play tomorrow.

EDIT: Russia has horses, so we really didn't need to go the MDI path if we really wanted.

I am sorry, Aggie. You are right. But we were so terribly behind, even when I started.

Sucky or no, MDI are the only really decent attack unit we've got at this point, and given enough of them, we don't need to be buying horses (or stop selling ours) and buy chivalry too. Does anyone really fancy taking on Swiss Mercs or muskets with regular horsemen ? We don't want to fight a protracted war anyway - ideally, it's going to be grab the two cities and sign peace asap. We can always build cavs once we're ready for them, most likely somewhere in the middle of the industrial age.

I think Stapel's building a couple of libraries is actually a rather good idea - we could do some research at last-civ prices and eventually get to one or two of the optional techs the AI have ignored, of which there are quite a few in the MA.

IHT: A little MM-ing helps income and we make 98 gpt. I buy Theology from France for 45 gpt and 10 gold. I buy Education from Russia for 45 gpt and 200 gold. Germany lacks Banking, Astronomy but has Invention and Chivalry!

Within 5 turns new opportunities will come when a deal of 39 gpt and two furs deals expire.

IT: The English demand 40 gold and I give it. The Dutch want peace and I have to agree, because they have two units in our lands, which would cost us at least one city.
The Dutch and English start Shakepseare.

Turn 1 (260 AD) Not much

IT: The Babylonians want us to gang up vs China. I don't accept. The Dutch start Smith.

Turn 2 - 4 (270, 280, 290 AD) not much

IT: French start Smith and Shakespeare.

Turn 5 (300 AD) I ask the Dutch to leave our territory and the Dutch declare war . I buy Banking from France for 52 gpt, furs and 12 gold. I buy Invention from Germany for Banking 56 gold. Babylon gives us Printing Press for furs, 10 gpt and 10 gold.

Germany has Chivalry, Gunpowder over us. Others have a lot more, but we don't have the means.

IT: Babylon DESTROYS China. France starts Magellan. Russians start Smith and Magellan.

Turn 6 (310 AD) 5 MDI's manage to kill three Swiss Mercs in Lauwersoog and we take the city. :D Two MDI's are lost near Enschede.

IT: Babylon declares war on France. Germany starts Bach, England starts Magellan and Smith, France starts Shakespeare, Russia starts Newton,

Turn 7 (320 AD) Two MDI's are killed in the battle of Enschede. That one will not fall in this war :(

IT: The Dutch finish Shakespeare AND Bach.

Turn 8 (330 AD) Nothing much

IT: England declares war on Babylon. The English finish Newton.

Turn 9 (340 AD) Again nothing much in the Dutch war.

IT: A longbow enters our territory in the east.

Turn 10 (350 AD) MDI kills the longbow. Dutch still don't want to talk.

I buy Spices frpom Babylon for 15 gpt and Ivory from Russia for 16 gpt.

The fact that China is gone is not good for us. Now we only have Germany to make 2fers with. It will not take long, but no-one is in the Industrial Age yet. We are one tech away from Democracy!
Let's hope that we can make peace with Holland asap.
