Ted

After a minor payments dispute between our house and the ISP, I've been left without internet access for several weeks (it wasn't helped by my own motherboard giving out later necessitating a painful PC rebuild). My sincere apologies for the absence without leave, but I've had no control over this matter and have no other Internet access points than our home PC.

Looking at the progress though, it seems this team did much better in my absence ;). Also, my own PC is still far from being stable so I can only lurk and look at you beat Sid now :goodjob: .

Apologies to all but RL has prevented me from starting my turns :(

I'll make a big effort to get finished over the weekend.

Ted

A hard disk failure has lost my progress (turn 8) :( so I'm going to have to skip as I'm busy most of this week and it took a long time to play out those turns.

Ted

Sorry,

I wasn't clear. The hard disk with Civ and all the saves failed leaving me totally screwed :(

I haven't got time this week to replay my turns (I'm not even sure if I'll get Civ re-installed) so I don't have any option other than to to skip.

Ted

I guess that means Nad has it...

Jack - welcome back! If you are back now I see no reason not to play, as long as you take your time getting used to where we are and what our plans are. :)

As annares says, Jack you are welcome to play now if you wish. I'll be a couple of days at least. I will post a got it before starting once I'm in a position to play.

I will be able to play tonight...will post a got it when I get home in the evening

I hate to do this, but please also skip me this round...I'm having a difficult time at the moment. Hope to be able to play next round.

Hey Greebley, that makes you up and me on deck!

I personally don't care about rosters at all. IMO everyone is free to pick up when they can, and not to when they can't. RL very rightly takes 1st place. :)

Ok I got it. I will try to make my attacks a bit more controlled this time. :D

I am not sure this was decided:

Do we want to go to war with Sumeria during the next 10 turns?
Finish off Byzantium?

Jack, Speak up if you want a turn :) I won't get to this until tomorrow.

I think we need to go full steam against the Byzantines until either they are reduced to 2 or 3 cities, then we need to regroup and re-assess before attacking Sumeria.

If possible we need Cavs. I was hoping we could get Metallurgy cheap as part of peace with the Byzantines, then buy Cav from someone and upgrade before attacking.

Not sure how possible this is though...

I didn't end up following your advice Annares, though that would have worked too. I was just getting weary of war weariness I guess. Worked out ok.

Preturn: Things look pretty good. I move a few units. I see we have an empty army ready for us getting Cav.

IBT: Heraclea Deposes us. Nicomedia Deposes us. Both towns had a single Trebuchet in them.
Incas build Shakespeare.

910 AD: We destroy Nicomedia taking it back. A lot of units are injures so I let them heal this turn.

IBT: Inca makes peace with the romans and we get lose spices. I cylce ahead to prevent riots after first city.

920 AD:
WW seems really really nasty. I still don't understand how our WW can be that bad with Rome. We need recovery from the WW, so I am going for peace and head toward war with Sumeria. I am striking out into unknown territory, so here goes; wish me luck:

1) Byzantine will trade Metallurgy and Physics for 113 gpt and peace.
2) Attempt a careful tech steal from Sumeria: Success. We have Mil Trad.
3) Inca have no tech but they do have spices. I trade for it for horses and dyes
4) Rome has nothing to offer so I go for straight up peace so we can break it if we wish.
Ok, I really don't think the Byzantines will declare war if they catch us stealing so:
5) I try two steals off the Byzantines; the first succeeds, the second fails and Theodora is not pleased. We get Magnetism that Sumeria does not have, but they won't trade (even if we wanted to which I don't think we do. They might get Nationalization)...

Start upgrading

IBT: Shoot! Constantanople deposes us. Just not having any luck with that. It was getting pretty far down in pop too.

930 AD: Our upgrade cost just doubled, but there is nothing we can do about it. This was a bad time for that flip. A gather forces for Sumeria.

IBT: Not much

940 AD: Sumeria is now Industrial. I think I want to hit him now before he gets rifles. Next turn perhaps.

IBT: Not much

950 AD: I try an immediate steal from Sumeria. They catch us and we are at war. I ally with the Byzantines to destroy Sumeria.

I Capture Hyberiad and Madras.

IBT: A Cavalry Attacks and loses

960 AD: My armies hit Calcutta and another Sumerian city (forgot to write down the name. Both are razed. I decide that risking WW for flips with the other two is not a good idea and rase those as well.

IBT: Several units show up. We win more than we lose.

970 AD: Kill the enemy units.

IBT: Another musket guarding a 3 cav is offed along with one of the cavalry. It is hard to defend everything.

980 AD: Healing of armies. I build a bunch of temples push back borders.

IBT: Another city flips this one has a few squares overlap with Constantanople. I am getting bad luck on this.

990 AD: I kill units and heal some more. All Sumer's Resources were close to the border. We captured both Salts, his iron on the first turn and just got his horses.

IBT: Our capture of the Saltpeter on the first turn seems to be working. There are fewer Cav.
Portugal makes peace with the Inca and Byzantines.

1000 AD: Capture Der, Nagsu, and Marad. I kept them to block enemy movement. We may want to abandon after things are under control.

Notes:
We are completely overpowering the Sumerians. I don't see anything stopping us from taking the entire continent. Both they and the Byzantines lack resources.

I traded our iron to the Byzantines for the MA vs Sumeria.

I think my plan from here on out would be to attack and destroy Sumeria, then go for the Byzantines. After that go for a weaker civ on the other continent. If we keep them at war we can keep their unit counts down and so go for domination. I don't see anything that is going to be able to stop us.

OK, got it.

Likely I won't be able to play until tomorrow night...

It's a shame you didn't press on against the Byzantine while the cities were starving - not being able to take back flipped cities is the most annoying thing about peace.

Looks like a good job on Sumeria though, I will see how far I can get in my turns.

Ya, that is definitely the downside of the option I chose. The Byzantines will recover to a certain extent and be harder to take out later. Given the large number of flips it was worse than normal as well. Constantanople was a real loss and cost a good bit of money with the loss of Leo.

The upside is that we have fewer clowns and over double our previous income, though that will change as WW starts to affect us. An additional advantage is that the Byzantines are strong enough to keep Sumerian troops busy. It also got us to Military Tradition via the peace deal. The final upside is that we can steal techs from the Byzantines and if we fail we don't go to war and can try again. We should be able to attempt to get into the industrial age soon via a steal.
