Wow, this game is VERY good. I can't really say whether or not I love it, because I only played it for an hour at my friends house, but I should be getting it for my birthday on Monday. I must say, this game is definetely an improvement. They managed to combine the radically different-type groups (ala Starcraft and Warcraft) with their own style, the very similar groups (ala Age of Empires II) perfectly. I really liked the idea of having three different culture groups, and similar sub-groups, so playing against the Norse as Egyptians is different, but Egyptian on Egyptian is similar to AoEII. I have to give them credit for that. Then there are the graphics, which are some of the best I've seen in an RTS. The fully-rotatable feature is really a plus, as it can get very annoying when your army is behind a forest. Plus its just cool. :) Besides this, the water and land look superb. The addition of gods, mythical units, god powers, and favor is all very cool as well. I look forward to procrastinating with this game...:ack:

So what did/do you guys think of AoM?

I like it so far but I am slowly losing interest in RTS games....

Im probably not getting it. I dont really like mythology as much as I like history or sci-fi. Thats why I never played warcraft either...

Now that I have it, I can safely say that if you like RTS games, you should get this game. Even if you dislike the mythology aspect of it, the interface, controls, balance...everything about it is great. One of the best RTS games I've ever played. They managed to perfectly merge unique and similar civs...the graphics are best I've seen in an RTS...everything about it is good. The only downside is that it can be kind of slow if you run it at minimum specs...

..but I'm getting 256 RAM by tomorrow...

Its a good game but not outstanding, so coming from Microsoft (AOE, AOE2) it may be somewhat of a disappointment.

Very similar to AOE2 / I'm not sure which one I like better. Still AOM is a fun game and the myth units and heroes sure are cool.

I have been totally hooked on this game for about two weeks now. It's disturbing my sleeping and eating habits, and even worse, it makes me push all my school assignments into the future. But after I (hopefully) turn in an assignment tomorrow I'll have 'til the 20th until school starts for real, and that time I'll probably spend doing nothing but playing AoM.

Oh, and btw, Norse rock

I'm hooked on it too, Lord_Vetinari. You play online? I haven't yet, but I think I might...I have to work on getting my Classical times under 6 and my Heroic Times between 8 and 15. I seem to take the game too slowly.

Norse are alright. The favor can get annoying, as you get it in bursts, but I love the Ox Carts and the Ulfsarks. They make for an ideal foward base civ: totally mobile, with your basic infantry building barracks. Nice. :D I also like the Egyptians, though. Not the Greeks. They're too plain for me. :p

I bought AOM for myself as Christmas present:)

Unfortunately I now need a new PC to play it:(

I know how you feel. I got another 256MB RAM partly because of AoM. Before the RAM came, 2v2 slowed down pretty early, and 1v1 slowed down in the end of the game. Now it runs nice and smooth. :)

I played a great game with Set today. He's not good, but I just felt like trying him out. I must say, the jump from Easy to Intermediate is a big one, but its worth. They never used to attack on Easy, but attacks come every 2 minutes on Intermediate. Its harder, but its SO m uch more fun. If you play on Easy, you're missing out. :D

my slingers totally own you

Nope, I haven't played online yet. I wanna get some more practice before making a fool out of myself in public :D. I have the early buildup down quite good, but after that my micromanaging skills get a lot worse. I can quite easily take out the comp on hard with a rush, but if I let him build up I'm so doomed it's not even funny.

I prefer the Norse for several reasons. First of all, I'm naturally more versed in their mythology since I'm born here and all. But I also like them the most in gameplay for several reasons: They are much easier to MM (micro manage) than both the other cultures IMO - you don't have to bring villagers to your frontline, you build all your military units in one building (two in heroic and mythic), you don't have to waste villies or build time on getting favour. All this brought together helps a poor MMer like myself considerably.

Hey CG, if you wanna try a game against me someday just PM me. I'd love to get some friendly games down before getting into that hole ranked thing.

I wish I could say that. I can take out a comp on Medium both ways - rush and a build/turtle strategy. How much harder is Hard?

Good points, but for some reason I just don't prefer them. Their method of getting favor doesn't fit my style, as I'm not really a manic rusher - I like to rush every once and a while, to throw the opponents econ(onomy) off, but I really like that one big attack in Heroic. So I like to attack three or four times in Classical with about 20-25 units and a few M(hythic)U(nits)s in there. But, of course, getting favor steadly is harder to do with the Norse, unless you rush constantly, which I don't do.

That is one of the things I like about the Norse though - having Infantry build buildings. While that can be annoying (especially in Archaic when your one Ulf is scouting) they do make the ideal foward base civ. I don't really miss that when I play Isis, though. Because I stay in Classic a while (1 or 2 mins after comp goes Heroic) I usually take some vills, build barracks and towers around the settlements before Heroic, then hit Heroic and take all the Barrack ready settlements in one fell swoop. I'll sometimes throw in a Midgol Stronghold in my main foward bases too. When I do this, I can usually manage to keep my vils away from the front lines.

I mainly like Ra and Isis (but not that Ra FH - too popular for me...;)) and I'll occaisonally try a Loki game. I really don't like Greeks, and I'm not sure why - I just seem to do bad with them. I love getting a good econ with Isis or Ra, hitting Classic in 5-6 mins, buildign up a nice army, striking a few times in Classical, building some foward bases, and then hitting them with 50 guys for the kill.

Thanks for the invite, but if you read my "Firewalls and LinkSys Routers" thread, I won't be playing online. Maybe another time. :)

petsuchos rock!

Rushing the comp on hard is easy, at least with the Norse. Just hit his villies constantly at first, then when your army is big enought to allow it you just send a few guys to build watch towers next to every single gold mine the comp could realistically reach. That way you can always keep track of where he's minig gold, and thus you deny him any and every access to gold except for his first (medium) gold mine. If you keep this sort of pressure on him for a while, he will soon fold like a paper dragon.

As for how much harder hard is than medium, I think it's a lot harder if you don't rush him. If you try to boom or something, he will just send wave after wave after wave of units against you untill you give in. Really pisses me off sometimes.

Good points, but for some reason I just don't prefer them.

I know exactly what you mean. It's the same for me with Egypt. I understand that they're a very powerfull civ, and that they have many pluses (the Roc drop is way deadly, not to speak of merces - at least until the patch), but I just can't be bothered to play them anymore than the occasional game. I really don't know what it is about them that makes me not like them.

Ok.

You know, to be honest, I never thought of using towers offensively like that. I never really did it in AoEII, and I've heard that towers are weaker in AoM, so I never bothered to try. When I rush, its usually with a raiding party of about 10-20 guys that just interrupt their gathering of resources and hit their villies and econ buildings. I usually do it until his econ is so out of whack. Then I start hitting the military buildings, get enough force, and hit the TC(s). By then, I have a large military, and its on to the next guy if its a team game. But, with all this tower rushing, I can really see how Norse fit your style - thats alot of frontline building.

You on any AoM forums like Age of Mythology Heaven? I've never seen you if you do; do you go by a different name?

hehe, just used son of osirus

I've been lurking over at some of the sites for a few weeks now (AoM heaven, MR.Fixit, Planet AoM), but I've only registered to be able to DL recorded games. I have not posted anything on any of the sites.

Btw, I just noticed that you've made some posts over at AoM heaven :)

Yeah, the towers are weak, but I never really expect them to kill anything but villagers. I use them mainly for scouting the goldmines. Also, remember that towers don't affect your pop limit which is very often a big advantage. Of course, I always try to reach my pop limit before starting towers, and if I can't afford them then I just post 2-3 Taxmen by the goldmines. The important thing is to make sure that your opponent never gets any easy access gold.

Wow, did you guys see the latest patch. Ra is dead now!

BTW, I finally started playing multi today. I've done ok so far, 1 loss and three wins.

 There is a new patch! *runs to check it out*

To be honest, I've been playing less and less AoM. Not that its bad or anything, but I just got Sim City 4 (great). SC3K had a huge hold on me, so I've been anticipating this game. Whenever I feel a need to warmonger, I'll go on an AoM binge. Plus, I'll have to play now that there is a new patch out. See how much they killed Ra.

i wonder if foxelitex is crying

EDIT: I just checked out the patch...thats alot of changes. They really hit Ra and some regular Egyptian techs and bonuses...although I like the fact that they tried to make Set better (although he is still worse than Ra or Isis, IMO)

Nah, I think he'll be able to pull through. After all, there was a slight shift away from Ra in the top spots even before the patch, and he has no doubt been practicing hard with some other cultures since the news of the patch surfaced. In all honesty, I think that the Ra FH scare was a little overblown, but as it was still a lot easier to execute than to counter, I believe the did the right thing by nerfing it. It should make life easier for pepole ranked somewhere in the middle where Ra FH is still king (or so I have been led to understand).
