This sucks... I have a sneaking suspicion that it's some weird spyware thing, but I'm too stupid to find out or do anything about it. :(

It just pops up with the message that Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and is shutting down.

This isn't spyware, it's a worm. Would I be correct in assuming the error message says something about a Remote Procedure Call?

You should run an anti-virus scan asap. It is likely the worm has disabled your anti-virus program so you should try this online scan from Trend Micro:

Zakharov, I ran Norton and well... Norton found some stuff, and it was unable to delete them, but afterwards, it worked just fine.

But no, it said nothing about a remote procedure call.

By any chance have you been trying to use video files. Some video files that haven't been compressed properly cause Windows explorer to crash when I try to start them. The only way I could fix it was to decompress and then recompress it myself. Which takes a significant amount of hard drive space.
