AI Effects when Time is the only VC?

So I'm looking to get into a good game on one of the middle difficulties (Prince/King) where I can have an enjoyable time without feeling like I should be focusing on a certain strategy. I would prefer the AI to diversify on strategy as well... I've never tried the higher difficulties, just so everyone knows this is the level I'm used to playing on.

If the Time VC was the only one enabled, does the AI act less constrained to one or two strategies, or do they almost always act the same way regardless of VC's?

Also, does anyone know of any good number tweaks to the game files to give me longer research periods without adversely affecting other areas of gameplay? I would like to enjoy each era without always having to participate in the tech race to stay on top in the world scene.

Note: I play on a Mac so I don't use mods, just minor number tweaks.
 
without mods you need to edit your
assets\Gameplay\XML\GameInfo\CIV5GameSpeeds.xml

and increase
<ResearchPercent>***</ResearchPercent>

where the *** currently listed will depend on quick/standard/epic/marathon section
defaults are 67, 100, 150, 300

I generally play with mods that increase that amount by 50 to 100 percent. So change standard to 150 or 200 if that's what you normally play. I like the longer research times but have never liked epic/marathon because of the increased production times as well. So that fixes that.

Just beware that income can become an issue, because you will be unable to produce 'nothing' and you may end up building scouts just to delete them for gold. Also, the AI will have quite large armies, you will be forced into wars and demanding tribute from CS becomes harder.

Actually the mod "Tempo Temporal" gives you regular production times (and religion requirements) at Marathon speed.

This is about someone who can't/doesn't use mods. I use mods just fine. My complaint about Epic/Marathon unmodded is that the only real time dilation effect is how often you get to move a unit.
 
Disabling VCs doesn't have any influence on the AI. They'll play as they normally do.
(If Domination was the only active VC, they'd also not all turn into bloodthirsty warmongers for e.g.)

They do, especially if they are Gandhi.

Suggestion: take a random unit that you'll never build or upgrade to (i.e., paratrooper), change the pre-requisite tech to "none", and jack up the hammers to some ungodly number. It would make more sense to build & sell scouts, of course, but if you just didn't feel like all those extra clicks then this would save them for you. ;)
 
Yeah, my only concern there would be the AI deciding to build it for some dumbo reason :p
