AI galley crossing doesn't work for humans.

I am not sure this is the right forum...

I have been watching Babylonian galley travel back and forth between continents at one particular point. I am isolated on my continent and want to meet the other civs. I have open borders with the Babylonians but I can't cross at the same point with my galley. Are things broken or do AI's have advantages I wasn't aware of? Do I need to wait until I get optics to cross?

You only gain ocean access in your own culture.

I was about to respond to my own thread. As soon as culture passed the next increment on my city, I was able to get across.
