How does Earth map usually play out?

I am considering using the US, and try to create borders as close as I can to how it is presently, and becoming economic powerhouse and have lots of resources to trade.

Except I also want competition and AIs to actively try to harm me or invade or at least involve me in their matters across the world.

Will I get a good challenge and some realism? Like, England becoming industrious and a naval power as an AI. Does that ever happen?

No, it doesn't.

If you want an easy game, do not try the US, unless you are playing on a low difficulty/knowing how to rush properly.

I'll tell you what the civs do :

China and Persia usually run away, getting lots of territory.

Russia sometimes runs away, getting lots of territory.

Greece usually founds 1-3 cities, and is, err, nothing. (Although I saw them conquering Persia once! That was quite amazing actually :lol)

Arabia usually expands properly into the middle east and Africa, founds a religion and converts half the world to it. They are a decent techer.

Egypt usually expands properly into Africa and techs decently. However, they tend to found Judaism, convert to it and become an international pariah.

Mansa Musa usually underexpands, but because he is a good techer, he can sometimes keep up in power.

Montezuma usually takes over the whole of America, vassaling/destroying the United States.
Huayna Capac usually stays on his side of the Andes, being another backwater. He sometimes founds the religion of the Americas, though.

England settles Scandinavia and, err, England. They tech decently, but do not found colonies and the like.

Japan sometimes gets crushed by China, sometimes founds a colonial empire in Indonesia/Australia. They also tend to get one or two cities on the mainland.

Mongolia underexpands and vassals to someone.

France builds a lot of wonders and does usually not found any extra cities.

Spain usually founds a religion, converts half the world to it, builds the Apostolic Palace and keeps OCCing in Madrid.

Germany occasionaly gets strong by settling in Scandinavia.

Rome usually gets only 2-3 cities and is a backwater.

I'd suggest playing as Rome, China, Mali or Japan, if you want it easy. But if executed properly, a settling of North America can be effective. Take out Montezuma ASAP though!
France has a very strong wonderspamming capital : if you like a change, you can try OCC with it. I won a Space Race on noble with it.

Thanks for all the info. I always play on Noble difficulty and it seems to give me good enough challenge and makes me have to work to become dominant.

I think I could handle Montezuma, though If I were to play as the US. I like the sound of the Eurasian/Asian civs becoming strong and having a lot of land. Do those civs ever invade the Americas on Noble difficulty, though?

It's not too hard to play as Montezuma, and you get to have North America and eastern South America all to yourself. (Inca is too stupid to leave their pennisula). If you kill Roosevelt and build the Great wall (easy to do on Noble, you have all the time in the world to expand and improve. Though only the eastern US has good land for mass cottages.

Well, there's Roosevelt, but he's arguably one of the most pathetic AIs in the entire game. If you aren't in North America Roosevelt typically becomes Monty's slave, except once in a blue moon where they're at a stalemate.

In general Russia, China, and Persia are the greatest threats. Occasionally Germany but everyone tends to hate Fred. Everyone else in Europe (especially Spain) is a joke. Which is why European starts are the easiest since you can just kill them all in the beginning.

Egypt is also a great spot to play from, since you can just bowl over your neighbors (they have poor starts) with war chariots and later elephants.

I have never seen an old world AI mount a serious military invasion of North America in many Earth 18 games. Probably if you DOW somebody like China as soon as you meet them they would eventually muster a sizeable task force but otherwise I think it's just a bit too far away from everywhere for the AIs to actively make the decision to come when there are so many other potential targets for them nearer home.

If you like a challenge, then make landbridges between America, Europe and Asia. Be sure to make them attractive for settling on by adding resources and the like. This way, the AIs will turn their attention on America too.

I always thought its a joke that madrid is landlocked and that spain has no room to build a port city, since spain is known for exploration and settling in the americas. How the fudge is it going to achieve that with only madrid?

All those 1 off coast starts pretty much spell a death sentence for many an AI

Many people move Madrid to the coast(barcelona) and Inca to the coast, as well as opening passages in the andes so he actually expands.

If you do that, it usually leads him to spam archers all the game due to the mass barbarian incursions ;)
Try placing Cuzco into the only Andes pass, it makes things a little bit easier for him (barbs get -20% strength when attacking cities)
