AI is not trying to prevent me from winning a match

In Rise and Fall, I remember getting beat up by the likes of Ghandi when I was getting too close to victory. Multiple leaders would declare a joint war against me and use nukes and large armies during the endgame to prevent me from winning. The AI would send me a message before the DOW explaining me I was literally too close to a victory.

Now, I’ve played a fair bit of Gathering Storm, and never have I seen such behavior. The AI just sits there doing nothing.
Is this late game AI behavior from R&F being left out in GS on purpose?
The only late game “threat” I’m seeing is sea level rise and flood barrier rushes. That’s pretty much it.
In civ 5 for example, leaders would also backstab you and come after you at the end if you were winning.

They removed the "you are winning" negative diplomatic modifier either in a late rise and fall patch, or the beginning of gathering storm.

They removed the "you are winning" negative diplomatic modifier.
Why would they do that?
And how can I mod it back in?
Can I disable GS to bring it back in? Or is it a base game patch change?
This feature is much needed!

So basically they introduce robots in GS and make every leader passive pascifists. Thats ridiculous

For many people the AIs are there to role play, it totally broke immersion for them when the AIs started playing it as a game.

Tick box for competitive AI

I think that would be ideal scenario if they had a more comprehensive AI approach.

Sliders for if you wanted to the AI (overall) to be more competitive (like a human player, going for the win) vs more 'role play' (based on how you played the diplo game). A slider for the AI to be more aggressive (militarily) vs more peaceful. Etc.

And then adjusted modifiers so it's still competitive regardless.

It doesn't happen often but I have had this happen twice.
I stop warmongering and passively start working towards an SV.
I don't watch what is going on and all of a sudden I am shown the Defeat Screen.
It seems the AI beat me with a Religious Victory twice in the last year.
Once at turn 209 and just recently on turn 249.
Both times I could of bought profits and spread religion to prevent this.
Also Declaring War and condemning Heretics would of easily fixed the issue.
I was too busy building National Parks and not paying attention.
I missed the mass invasion of prophets and the RV screen threat.
I would like to see a box or slider though.

Yes, more control in the setup screen with the use of sliders, like in Stellaris. That would be great.

And yeah, if you don’t pay attention and condemn the heretics, you might suddenly lose to a religious victory, indeed. But that’s pretty much it. For some reason, the AI just isn’t interested in winning. It will declare random wars with everyone but not once it focus on actually winning.
I started enabling the religious victory again to make the game a little bit more competitive, actually.

They should stop this seating in the fence approach that only produces pathetic leadership. It is past the time they should develop two AI modes.
One competitive who knows by turn one space victory is a thing, and one immersive who tries to mimic whatever people think is behind history wheels.

Or, perhaps, since they already have difficulty settings - just add that diplomatic penalty back in for Deity and Immortal.

I don't think they need any more slider and settings options. Just do a better job using the difficulty settings they have! I wouldn't expect anyone that is playing Civ 6 on Deity is looking for the Role Playing experience. And I would expect the Deity AI (at least) to be actively trying to win the game!

One thing I remember working quite well in civ 5 was that there would break out a world war somewhere in early late game. It seemed like every AI would enter a war just before nuclear weapons and I actually liked that. It gave the late game a bit more flavor to it and it could seriously mess up your economy and other thing due to all your trade routes being plundered by allied CS and what not.

Civ 6 late game is very blant. I would actually argue it is non existent at the moment. The worst part is by far the AI doesn't seem to aim for final victory even though it is within grasp. It has ruined the game for me quite a bit. There's just nothing interesting going on the last 100 turns of the game unless you drive the war yourself.

I completely forgot R&F AI had the negative modifier for being close to winning. It shouldn't be necessary though. Even in role-playing AI they should still try to win/prevent the player for winning.. But preferable they should just try to win the game themselves with their personal agenda focus.
